I visited this exhibition in the autumn of 2021, and while it stopped earlier this year, I still liked it a lot. It was an exhibit on the history of cars, and included both art pertaining to cars, and cars themselves - including in an outdoor sculpture garden. Interestingly, the exhibition also included art that both embraced and critiqued the very existence of the car. Anyway, the cars on display were almost entirely classics from the 1950s and 1960s, with a couple exceptions like the Smart car and a Ferrari F1 racer. Here are the cars I remember seeing:
Cisitalia 202 GT - my favorite car at the exhibition, given that it was a Pininfarina design.
Citroen DS
Ferrari F1 racer from the 1980s/1990s - seemingly driven by Prost.
Fiat 500
Jaguar E-Type
Jeep
Porsche 911
Smart car
Volkswagen Beetle
So, what cars do you think deserved to be part of "Automania"? I wouldn't simply pick a car that was significant within the world of cars like the Daimler-Benz Motorcar, but a car that would seem aesthetically attractive to almost anyone with eyes. In this regard, here would be my picks:
Alfa Romeo Spider (Series 1)
Aston Martin DB5
Chevrolet Corvette (C2)
Ford Mustang Mk.I
Lamborghini Countach (Never mind if it's the original or the 25th anniversary version. A Countach is a Countach!)
Mercedes-Benz 300SL
And if the MoMA were to add cars to its collection from manufacturers already in its collection, here would be my picks:
Citroen 2CV
Ferrari Testarossa
Fiat 124 Spider
EDIT: Fun fact. When I went to go see this exhibition, there was a replica of "Unique Forms of Continuity in Space" on display in a completely different gallery. Why do I mention this? Look up the name of that sculpture, and you'll quickly recognize it...
