Remembering why I loved GT in the first place.

Ok, so I took a break from GT5 (about 6 months), and have recently picked it back up following the 2.0 update. I have also started reading the GTP forums again as well. One thing I have noticed is all the people that still have so many negative things to say. I will admit that I have done my fare share of complaining at one time or another, but after playing again after my break I have remembered why it is that I fell in love with GT in the late 90's.....THE LOVE OF CARS.

I remember playing GT back on PS1. After finishing the game there was only one thing to do: Buy cars, modify them if you want, and DRIVE them. There was no cockpit view, but I still loved it. There was no online play, but I still loved it. The graphics gave away that you were playing a video game, but I still loved it. The AI weren't able to chalange me, but I still loved it. The only thing that mattered, was that there were endless cars to buy, and drive, and it was FUN.

I recently got back to those basics, and really remembered why I loved the game in the first place. I can go buy an exotic car I can only dream of owning, take it to a track I can only dream of driving on, and be emersed in the feeling that I am actually enjoying the feeling of doing just that. That's when it hit me, That's what it's all about.

Everything that PD has tried to do with GT5 is just a bonus. Having the ability to play against other enthusiats online is extra. How many of you loved the game when all you had was yourself and GT? So it's not perfect, at least we have it. How many of you loved the game before the cockpit view? I did, and I was happy with the 200 cars with a detailed cockpit view. I thought it was cool of PD to deliver, and give us a generic cockpit view (something alot of people asked for), but some people just thought that wasn't good enough. I can't believe people complain about the graphics. I remember when the first GT graphics were considered awesome, has anyone played it lately? GT5's graphics are excelent. They're not perfect, it's a video game. Finally, why does everyone think that the AI should be any different in GT5 then they have ever been? I don't ever remember having the AI give me a good challenge.

I think if everyone got back to the thing that made them fall in love with the game in the first place, they would be able to spend more time enjoying one of the greatest driving sims ever instead of complaining about it. At this point it's just beating a dead horse, PD knows about the games shortcomings. The fact that the game has been out almost a year, and they are still giving us updates, and making the game better should make everyone happy. It took me buying a game that promised big updates, and DLC (MX vs ATV Alive) to close up shop 3 months after the release to really appreciate that PD still cares about this game.

I hope somebody reads this, turns off thier computer, then goes and remembers what it is that made them love this game in the begining.

👍 Very well said

For me it´s just because of the feel you get when cruising around your favorite car. specially with GT5´s physics, which are the best after the remarkable GT3 physics.

Another thing I love about this game is the fact that you can test so many cars, and feel their difference.

And one other thing: GT has been the only car game where I can completely relax and enter in some sort of trance, while going around the nurburgring for hours. Pretty much like real race car drivers do. That feeling is priceless. Better than... you know.

EDIT: Oh, and cockpit view. That was the best thing that GT5 has to offer.

I remember when I was about 10 and GT3 was out, was what I learned when I played the game, I literally was learning the physics of the cars just by trial and error with tuning the cars (and watching stages 1, 2, & 3 of initial D), I learned that about downforce, power to weight, oversteer, understeer, drifting, ground effects, body modifications, all within just weeks, and I would go to school and talk to the other kids that had GT3, and they would just stare at me while I talked to them, not understanding a word I was saying, I felt like I was gifted or something lol, but it was just because of GT. But now that GT5 is out, I'm using the knowledge I gained from GT, auto tech, and physics classes, and I don't think I've ever been this excited about a game before in my whole life, I'm still learning, and I owe it all to GT, ever since that Christmas day in 1999, I've been a diehard fan, thats what I think made me a fan, was that it not only taught me about cars, it taught me about my passion, my goal in life is to at least enter an amateur racing league, and its all thanks to GT, and thats why I've always loved it, its not a game to me anymore, its an experience.

Awesome post sir... you deserve beer and cookies. Yeah, I still remember the first time I ever played GT1... and the first time that I could see the replay. My God, that was a shock.

I agree with every word you posted. Sometimes we find ourselves kinda lost in GT5 huge experience... there's so much to do! Then, just get back to the basics.

And with that, I have now 700+ cars and can't stop buying them.

Well said.

I'm sick of all the complaining. If you don't like it, go play Forza, then you'll find yourself back on GT5.

Thing is, people don't understand how much work goes into a video game. For premium cars, they have to model the WHOLE interior (Which trust me that takes a while) THEN they have to code everything too!

Good thread!
I never put GT5 down, but really enjoy it more after 2.0. Welcome back Trucker.

after a very similar experience.. i agree..well said.

Nice post. I never lost that feeling with GT5 as a whole, but it has tempered some. With SPA coming Tuesday, I do have some excitement brewing and I can't wait till I get to experiment with that track.

👍

Even with the best online racing someone can have the most fun I have with this game is buying cars and driving them with no other cars on the track.

I love getting a bunch of similar cars and testing them all on a track to see which is fastest :D

very well said, I couldn't agree more:drool:

I completely agree. Back then it was just about driving the cars. Now everyone nitpicks at every single thing. If you can't accept the game for what it is, then go design your "Perfect racing sim" your self.

Very well said sir! That is exactly what GT is and has always been about 👍

GT5 is the best racing that anyone can afford!
👍

Great thread, I was a bit of a late starter with gt, didn't have a ps1 so only experienced gt1 when I was at friends houses, it was with gt3 when it all started for me. I loved how it took time, determination and skill to learn the characteristics and capabilities of all the cars, then how they changed with each individual modification, the detail even then was astounding! Gt4 gripped me for years, mainly due to the nurburgring. But gt5 is just on a whole other level. Hot lapping the nurburgring at half 5 in the morning (track setting not literally lol) in anything from a stock ek9 to a fully built bentley speed 8 is just epic. This game is about driving and the thrill of driving, it is the next best thing to doing it in real life, I'm pretty sure that's one of the things Kaz set out to achieve.

And here I thought I was the only one who can enjoy the simple gift of driving cars I want to drive. GT5 had delivered on that so well that I'd never once thought about any of the shortcomings that others complained about.

@ suprtrukr425 - 👍👍👍👍👍

Sometimes late at night I'll get into one of my very old low hp premiums & just take a slow drive around the 'ring & other fav tracks, stopping along the way to examine details you don't see at over 250 kph. Awesome!

Agreed 👍

👎 Do we REALLY need these sort of comments. I'm seriously trying to enjoy GT5 and GTP again, then I read this and just feel so.......

Then don't read it.

👍:cheers::bowdown:
Great post fine sir.

I never fell out of love with it. Ever since playing my mates GT3 way back when I was 10 if that, I loved it. I have, as Im assuming most if not all of us here, a great love of cars. I love everything they are and everything they can be, and the games are no exception. Yes, GT5, as with many other games, has its flaws. But everytime I drive out onto that track, I overlook almost every single one of them.:gtpflag:

I agree with you 100%. I was just gonna come on here and post something similar.

I'm glad to see that other people still appreciate the game for what it is, and not what they think it should be.

Then don't read it.

What, like I have some crystal ball that warns me of comments like that?...oh damn I DON'T have one, well whodathunkit?

I wish I had it though, then I could have avoided your strikingly intelligent post.

Then I honestly don't know what to tell you.

But, I can't understand what you're so mad about in the first place.

Would blew my mind about Gran Turismo was that it had normal everyday cars in a racing game.

Coming from Need for Speed 1, I was a shell shocked six year old.
