In honor of those who have served and are presently serving.

Freedom is never free.

Take a moment and thank a Vet.

R.I.P. Dad - and thank you !

Always a big, big thank you here.

I can't begin to explain how much I miss it myself.

Thank you for your service to all that have served. I will always be in your debt; a debt that can never be repaid. You are truly amazing people. A big shout out to you all!

I've changed the thread title to reflect that this isn't only an American day of Remembrance - it is a global day (and in fact, started in the UK after WWI).

I wonder who chose the days if you look back in history? From what I have read, the meaning Remembrance Day is more similar to the American Memorial Day than it is about remembrance. Veteran's Day is more of a celebration of those who have served more than a memorial of those who died.

Seeing as Veteran's Day and Remembrance Day coincide, it's kind of curious.

Fair point - you boys in the US have Memorial and Veteran's Day 👍

My impression of the Remembrance Day concept - at least in Commonwealth countries I have lived in and, what I experienced when I was in Europe at the time of a Remembrance Day - is that it functions as both. Thanks and remembering the sacrifice of those who gave their lives in war, and a celebration of those who fought and survived.

So many restaurants/retailers offer free food to veterans on Veteran's Day. I can never decide which one to choose. ;)

For others who have served, here's a list of places in 2013 who are offering discounts, food, and other goodies on Veteran's Day to say thank you. Take advantage of it because you've earned it.

Nice link 👍

And if you happen to run into a Vet, buy him / her a cup of coffee and tell them thanks. It will mean a lot to them.

Doesn't even have to be Veteran's Day, either. I won't forget the time someone picked up the tab for my wife and I's breakfast one time while I was in uniform.

This day is one that is fairly close to me for three reasons.

I know many people and friends in the military.

Joining the military was and may be one of my highly considered plans.

I still remember one serviceman saying I'd be a kick ass soldier.

None of you will be forgotten.

I wouldn't call it a 'global' day - more of a national one. :)

Strangely enough, while my parents were kids during the last World War, as Allies, and being bombed the hell out of by the Axis, I have many friends from both sides, living now in a country that holds members formally from many nations both Axis and Allied. I wear a poppy in my lapel at this time (it's the tradition here with most in Canada) but I wear it with respect for all soldiers that served in that terrible war - and all servicemen and women who still serve - for whatever country they are prepared to sacrifice their lives for.

When we finally master the art of surrogacy - we can go back to wearing surrogate poppies for the surrogate blood that is shed. In the name of 'freedom' - whatever that is, wherever they are. For now . . . we take a moment to mourn the bloodshed that is real.
