OK, I really like GT5. It's why I bought my PS3. My son bought me an Xbox with Forza 3 for Christmas and once my Fanatec wheel arrives (I just can't drive with a joystick) I look forward to playing Forza 3 as well. I do not need to argue whether one game is better than the other; the more driving games, the richer my life!

To the point of this post:

Like many people I've got sucked into grinding my B-Spec drivers to level up and complete endurance events even though it seems a strange activity. Basically I enter a race, pick my drivers, set my pit priority, turn the TV off and walk away for hours at a time. How is that gaming? I don't know.

But what brings me real joy is taking one of my older cars out on the Nurburgring for a leisurely drive. It was a hoot driving the Kubelwagen along that glorious course. And don't get me started on the sheer pleasure of driving my '68 Karmann Ghia Coupe, the very car I lusted after when I was in junior high too many years ago (or was it actually the platinum blond teacher who drove it?).

Anyway, I'll be glad when I can finally resist the urge to chase some achievement goal, forget about experience points and amassing a fortune in credits, and just have fun driving. That's what I really want from a driving game.

This is why I hope someday Kaz will impliment that free roam mode he was talking about where you can drive through citie and towns having to obey traffic laws and dealing with realistic traffic... if done right that could be the kind of unexpectedly great experience Tokyo Bus Guide was...

It's all good. You are definitely enjoying the game. I do that too.

I like to drive in the rain and also the self created track where fireworks were beautiful.

I tend to get RWD cars out and being equipt with the G27 and my fabbed cockpit, burn outs, doughnuts. . . I like to roll and downshift and do some hits.

I will however take your post and put it to use. I plan to take something classic out on the ring later today and just enjoy. Turn off the 1 abs I do use and let it hang out a little. ;)

FWIW Get a wheel and cockpit for this game people. Best move in gaming I have ever made.

Was thinking of doing the nurburgring in something slow- I'm going to have a go in the kubelwagon having read this :) thanks

Try the Nurburgring, at 5 in the morning (Sunrise) in a nice 90's 172BHP Celica, it's one of the best things I've ever done in any game!

The Sunday drive aspect is great indeed.

Going back to the B-Spec question though, you can stay with your Bob, no need to give him an overpowered car so that he wins by himself. Give him a challenge, a car closer to the others so you need to instruct him how to get through this.

Schwarzwald B - Nurburgring in a RUF CT2...It can be quite intense, trust me.

It's exactly this aspect which made me play GT4 for years and years after I long finished the game itself and wasn't impressed racing predictable AI anymore, just the simple pleasure of driving cars for the sake of driving cars without a competitive element.
The huge variety of different rides, and particular those which are often criticized for not being suited for racing, suddenly make a lot of sense for the more eclectic petrolheads amongst us, especially those who haven't got the funds to drive and own that many classic, exotic or even humdrum cars in real life on a regular basis (and let's be honest, that's the vast majority).
Online play was what extended the lifespan of Prologue for me since the amount of content was obviously severely limited and thankfully GT5 has both aspects (large amount of content to keep me entertained offline for ages and an online component) combined in one game.
Even when the limited amount of tracks will start to get boring for a "Sunday drive" there's now the possibility to create (or generate to be precise) your own tracks.
This feature is ofcourse useful to create and finetune racing tracks to use more than once but can also be used to just quickly create a new and therefore surprising road section to use only for the purpose of pretending to drive on a real road you haven't encountered before and then throw away again if it isn't worth saving.

The trouble is I really don't care to put 4 or more straight hours into a B-Spec race. I'm actually only grinding to get to level 35 (currently 32) to get the X1 as it appears that's the reward. I had F1 2010 but found the commitment of a couple of hours to a race weekend too much for my tastes, even though I could break it up between practice, qualifying and the actual race. I prefer to jump in and drive for a half hour or so and then be free to move on. Perhaps that's one of the great appeals of the Nurburgring; depending on the car, I can do one lap between 6+ (AMG Stealth) and 17+ (Kubelwagen) minutes.

My hat is off to those who take their A-Spec and/or B-Spec careers into the 24-hour endurance events. I just can't bring myself to give up that big a block of time, mine or my PS3's. For me it would suck the joy out of driving.

Fully modded 458 Italia, cockpit view, Nurburgring 24HR, 04:00. Amazing. The noise, the sights, the car.

I do this, in all sorts of Premium cars, no HUD.

Oddly enough, even though I know that track like the back of my hand, my lap times are usually a good 10 seconds [or more] slower like this. Probably because it's more intense, more realistic. With surround sound it is epic.

Please remind me how can I set the time (e.g. 0500hrs) for a track.

I remember I've done it when I'm hosting for an online race and choosing La Sarthe at 0630hrs, but thats about it.

Is there any possible way to set the time for a track in Arcade Mode Time Trial or GT Mode Practice Mode?

I'm with you on this! Nurburgring is a beautiful track - great to experience in the Kubelwagen.

On an opposite note - I like B Spec! Once again for the joy of driving - or rather, to watch someone else drive. I use the "no info" screen...sometimes I control Bob a bit, sometimes I let him do his own thing.

I'm not grinding toward any certain level, or worried about achievements - I'm enjoying the game for what it is, a "driving simulator". It's great to drive a lot of cars I only dreamed about or lusted after growing up, and driving them on some great tracks!

I love leisurely cruising the Nurburgring online with others, but of late my favourite activity has been driving Nurburgring in the X1, easily lapping it in under 4 minutes. :)

I've been having a blast just doing time trials around the huge Eiger Norwand K Trail course in all kinds of cars.

Under 4 minutes! Things must all be a blur. I look forward to trying it someday though hitting 80 mph in my Karmann Ghia on the final straight is pretty darn exciting too. :-)

Here's a challenge. I bought the SambaBus last night and took it on the Nurburgring. I raced it in the Extreme Schwarzland League B (that way I get 31,000 credits and a touch of experience even coming in dead last). Stock from the dealership, medium comfort tires, etc. Default driver assists (I didn't think to change them) and manual transmission. One lap which includes getting bumped around by all the fast cars at the very beginning of the race as they blast past (not a flying lap, in other words). I wasn't really pushing it, just enjoying the ride, and I posted a 15:04.017 time. I was doing a blistering 60 MPH as I drove under the Bilstein sign. I'm guessing I can break the 15-minute barrier but by how much?

So, under the same restrictions, what time can you post? Honor system, obviously, but if you come back with a 8-minute lap I'm not buying it. :-)
