I need some help quickly.

I got a program (AVG Secure Search/Security Toolbar) which I have no idea how I got it.
But the problem is to un-install it.

I've tried control panel etc etc. No solution, it says I need to be logged in as administrator, which I am.
I've tried a couple different "remove any programs no matter what" programs, but same problem.

Anyone know how to remove this rubbish?

Windows 8, 64-bit.

It was probably installed as part of another installation. Lots of programs package other installers with them which is a real pain.

You have a couple of options. One is to just disable the tool bar. The other is to find the installation directory in Program Files and delete it, then run CCleaner to remove any registry entries.

Tried that, it only just start the un-installing, but then freezes and I have to shut it down. Then I get a popup saying that I need to login in as admin again.

You'll have not unchecked the box that says "Install AVG Secure Search/Security Toolbar" when you installed AVG antivirus (probably AVG Free 2014).

I think it's actually a browser plugin, so check your browser for active plugins and deactivate it. Though bear in mind I use Windows XP and nothing I say may be relevant.

I have never installed AVG (anything), and I just had a clean install of Windows since I moved from Win7 to Win8.1.

I did find the browser plugin, and removed that. But still got the same problem with the files on my PC.

If you've updated Adobe Reader recently it "offers" to install that for you as well, defaults to "yes" if you're not careful. Could be wrong but I think the same with Sun's Java. Certainly there are other things that try to slip it past you as well. Not sure how to remove it other than what's already been suggested, but a Google search will likely turn up something.

Thanks for the suggestions, but it actually solved itself...

After countless of hours of useless fiddling from me.
