The Renault 5 Turbo or R5 Turbo is a high-performance hatchbackautomobile launched by the French manufacturer Renault at the Brussels Motor Show in January 1980. The car was primarily designed for rallying, but was also sold in a street version.

In response to Lancia's rallying success with the mid-engined Stratos, Renault's Jean Terramorsi, vice-president of production, asked Bertone’s Marc Deschamps to design a new sports version of the Renault 5 Alpine supermini. The distinctive new rear bodywork was styled by Marcello Gandini at Bertone.

Although the standard Renault 5 has a front-mounted engine, the 5 Turbo featured a mid-mounted 1397cc Cléon turbocharged engine placed behind the driver in mid-body in a modified Renault 5 chassis. In standard form, the engine developed 160 horsepower and 163 lb·ft (221 N·m) torque.

Though it used a modified body from a standard Renault 5, and was badged as a Renault 5, the mechanicals were radically different, the most obvious difference being rear-wheel drive and rear-mid-engined instead of the normal version's front-wheel drive and front-mounted engine. At the time of its launch it was the most powerful production French car. The first 400 production 5 Turbos were made to comply with Group 4 homologation to allow the car to compete in international rallies, and were manufactured at the Alpine factory in Dieppe.

....You mean, it looked like this?

Funny, when you type "Renault R5 interior pics" in the search engine, most of the time you get photos like the one I got.
Anyways, I do prefer the OP's interior pic - it's lot more interesting then the one I found...

Edit:.....Upon further inspection, @Tsukishima I don't think you got the correct interior photo. For one, the door card in your pic lack space for speakers, and the window winders seem to be lower down, too. To top it off, look at the hood, just visible on your pic - it's got some kind of hood vent, which the 5 obviously don't need, as it doesn't have anything in there. :odd:

While it's true I didn't have the correct picture in the OP, yours is of the interior of the Renault R5 Turbo II, which was actually worse than the Turbo I since it had the same engine but was heavier.

I have the correct cockpit picture in the OP now. 👍

.....Oh boy, we might get into a fight here.

This IS for Turbo I.

......Notice anything different from my earlier pic? No? Because both are from a Turbo I.

....Funny thing is, the website where the interior pic of your car come from, also has this one right next to it, also labeled as Renault 5 Turbo I.

I got a strong feelin' the pic you found was for the Prototype R5 Renault engineers were putting on at the time.

I could be wrong though, so if anyone has a better source of info, do please share.
