My bro's '97 civic blew a piston on the highway just 2 days ago. My best guess on the reason is that he never took care of his car - and the oil change was several thousand kilometers overdue...and he's been needing a new timing belt for ages...and a few other minor things he's never bothered to fix up for the longest time.

Anyways, he now needs a new engine and the mechanic quoted the whole swap to be about $3k canadian. Is that right? I was assuming that it would be a lot cheaper than that. We'd do it ourselves but we have absolutely no idea where to start so there's really no point in us attempting it. He doesn't need or want any performance mods unless they'll help for fuel efficiency so all we really want is to swap the engine for an identical one.

3k CDN? You can get a B16A from a JDM importer for 1500$! A D16Y like the one originally in goes for less than 1k, this guy's full of it!

How much is $3,000 Canadian in USD? And, does that include a new engine?

Two friends of mine own a shop down in Mississippi. They do swaps for right around $1,500 per car. And that's for different engines. If you're swapping an identical engine you should at least make a halfass attempt at it yourselves, or find someone to help you without charging you.

According to XE.com, it would be roughly $2,209.26 USD. And the cost includes the engine and labour. We may be able to find someone who does it cheaper but we want to make sure we can find someone we can trust.

A mechanic said he could replace the engine in my Civic for $1100, and that was with putting a new water pump and timing belt on the new engine. Mine was a 91, although i dont think the engines are all that much different, maybe a bit more expensive.
