Add something useful, I expect that replying with "bump" would be bad, but adding a picture of your favorite car would be fine.

What he said.

Bear in mind though that threads do just die, and should be left to die. If it's a good thread, it'll stay alive by itself without need of bumps.

Exactly. It wouldn't be fair to scream at everybody to SEARCH FIRST and then scream at them when they do, would it?

We disapprove of bumping (posting nonsense just to keep a thread on the front page) and gravedigging (posting nonsense in an ancient thread for no good reason). However, we heartily approve of researching old threads and then continuing the discussion with new info or additional questions. 👍

I would say its just within the realms of ok, since it didn't just say "bump" however didn't add any new info. You could probably add a couple of other carsvto your post to sway it further over the ok line.

No, I wouldn't really consider that a bump.

Let's put it this way: we probably won't count it as a bump if a) a significant amount of time - like a week or two - has passed since the last post, and b) you actually contribute something important to the discussion. Bumping is really only a problem in subforums with a high volume of traffic, like the Marketplace. I've seen people claim that bumping is totally justified because if they don't bump, their threads will fall from the active post queue and they will not be able to trade. I've also seen them claim that it's worth getting a warning for bumping because the bump means that other people can trade with them (this is usually followed up with an infraction for a bad attitude). In the case of the Marketplace, the mods probably won't object if you double-post a few hours apart if you've acquired half a dozen or more cars that you are looking to trade since your last post.

So, what you are saying is that if a week or two has passed, I can "bump" a thread without penalty?

No. Look at his point b) again. There's an 'and' there. ;)

A single word like "bump" or acronyms like TTT (to the top) will always be greatly discouraged and if used in excess, warnings/infractions will be distributed.

If a thread is important enough to warrant dragging it back to the top, it deserves to have some relevant information added to it.

Oh, I didn't see the "and" part.
But interludes said that "Bumping is really only a problem in subforums with a high volume of traffic, like the Marketplace."
So anywhere outside of "The Marketplace" such as the GT5 Q&A forum, a "creative bump" post would be OK as long as it is done moderately? (such as maybe a week or two after it died).

Provided that your post offers an avenue for the discussion to follow, chances are we won't object. But you post must have substance. As TB said, if you simply post "bump", it's not going to go over well with us.

No, that's not cool. Any response designed solely to bring a thread to the top of the active thread queue will be considered a bump. This is an example of an acceptable double-post a while ago, discussing Paul di Resta moving to Force India for 2011. The first post was me agreeing with Bee; I'd seen a copy of a magazine that ran a headline reflecting what he said. The second post, made three days later, contained an update on the situation, when a major publication ran a story important to the matter. It's an acceptable double-post because it contains information relevant to the topic. But "bumping" and "creative bumping" are not acceptable. Ever. If you absolutely have to double-post, your second post should contain something substantial for the conversation to digest.

Ok, thanks, you won't be seeing me do that again. :)

Hey guys,

Question, I am mostly in the marketplace and mostly interested in trading. I have a single thread for trading (just started this week) (and have been guilty of bumping - as I didn't realize that was a problem). I was trying to keep one thread with what I have to trade (and keep updating it via the first post - when a trade is scheduled or what I have that is new to offer). So should I basically start a new thread every few days, or can I post something on the bottom that says "I have updated my list, and have x dates available to trade." Would that be acceptable?

This is precisely what you should do, provided that doesn't happen every 13 minutes. ;)
