The new Porsche 911 that will make its first appeareance next Fall 2011 on the Frankfurt motor show will be lengthier 56 mm for a total length of 4.49 m (10 mm longer wheelbase) and 11 mm lower than the current one.

Differences don't stop here as the mechanical outlook will also be different.

The Carrera model will see its new engine dropping to 3.4L from the current 3.6L for 350 hp, 4.8 seconds for 0-100 km/h and top speed of 289 km/h. Mean consumption is decreased by 15% for a 8.9 litre/100 km.

For the Carrera S the 3.8L engine will have an output of 400 hp, 4.5 seconds for 0-100 km/h and top speed of 309 km/h but also a greater consumption of 9.1 litre/100 km.

Other features include both having new rear suspensions aiming at better ride quality and increasing the sports character. The Carrera will stand on 19 inch wheels and the Carrera S on lightweight 20s.

Lastly, unverified information speak of an edition of the Carrera S that will sport a 7 speed (!) manual gearbox. On the other hand, the new 911 will be at least 20 kg lighter than its current incarnation.

More information to come.

Or then they just borrowed it from VW's DSG parts bin and strengthened it up. Wouldn't be first time.

Does it come with a coxswain to shout "STROKE!" every time you need to change gears? because I get the feeling you're gonna do a LOT of rowing in that box.

That 7th gear will have no pull and will just be there to bring the mpg up to please the EU and hit economy targets.

oh. so it's just a six-speed with an electric overdrive. Basically like a Model "T" with a Ruckstell axle...only backwards, since the "T" would be a semi-automatic with a manual overdrive, and this is a manual with a semi-automatic overdrive.

other thing would be kind of like a dual-range 18-wheeler transmission.

Oh I don't know about that!??! :)

So far as I know it's the usual 7 mechanical manual gears I just expect the 7th to be a very long ratio of little use for spirited driving and just there for cruising and keeping the mpg up.

Are they going to keep the H gate pattern? if they are, are they going to make it six gears with a button for the 7th gear "overdrive," or are they just going to have all 7 gears on the lever?

A HH pattern would be a pain to use. I suspect 7th would be engaged like reverse is in a lot of cars with a lever round the stick.

All 991's will come with a 7 speed box as standard. It's a conventional manual gearbox with 7 gears. 7th is out on its own, top right.

Both the PDK and manual boxes are 7 speeds, with 7th being run as an 'over driven' gear to reduce consumption and emissions.

I can't see how a 7-speed H-pattern 'box will be a problem, really. To risk stating the bleeding obvious it's only one extra gear over a six-speeder, and nobody has had any trouble using one of those after years of 5-speeds, and people were fine with those after four-speeds... et cetera.

Given how short of throw many modern gearshifts are compared to those from years ago it's hardly going to be like operating the signal box at a railway crossing.

Glad to see they're making it lighter, though 20kg seems fairly insignificant really, unless that 20kg is all being removed from the engine bay for improved weight distribution. Not so sure about the increase in size though. The one thing I've always liked about the 911 is how compact it is. I know cars are growing but I question whether the 911 really needs to get any larger.

The car is growing by 56mm... which is 2", hardly a big change. Much more important is that the wheel base is growing by 100mm (not the 10mm quoted above) to give shorter overhangs and even better handling.

Regarding the gearbox... I'm sure people said the same thing when 5 speed boxes 1st came out, and again when 6 speed boxes became common place... change happens you know ;)
