Back in January 2001 I played Ridge Racer V extensively whilst waiting for Gran Turismo 3 to materialise.

Yesterday, I took it off the shelf and decided to give it a bashing whilst waiting for Gran Turismo 4....lol

Great fun arcade racer, but even on "hard" difficulty level I think it will only take a week or 2 to completely beat the thing. I struggled back in 2001 on "normal" difficulty and took 2 months then!

My racing must have improved a hell of a lot in the last 3 years :)

Any other fans of the Ridge Racer series here?

It's a shame that the recent follow up (R Racing) is such a pile of "c**p". They should have made a Ridge Racer 6 instead.

*sigh, Ridge Racer does not suck. Its just not for everyone. Old school racers like me will never tire of Ridge racer. That goes for every racing game not F355 by sega, they all hanlde worse than RR games for that matter.

RR fan 4 life.

Altezza thanks for bringing back to the top even if you do hate the game. Without your post I doubt I would have had the pleasure of receiving LaBounti's more positive comments.

Given the choice of GT3 or Ridge Racer, I would choose GT3 anyday. Ridge Racer is just a good fun game with very little (in fact nonexistent) depth.

However the races are constructed in a classic "gradually getting harder" arcade type way and its great fun.

There is a great 99 lap race in the game which is done with "checkpoints" so you have to drive pretty damn well to get very far.

To my knowledge checkpoints have never been used in any other endurance race in any other game. I think its a great concept as at the beginning of the race you don't even know if you will survive to lap 5 let alone 99. :)

That guy who says Ridge Racer sucks knows nothing about good videogames. Although, I wouldn't expect much from a person who has "drifter" in their username.

If there is a "pop" version of racing games, Ridge Racer would be it. Visuals, sound, and gameplay, Ridge Racer has it all. Personally, I thought Ridge Racer Type 4 was the best. The music and RPG style gameplay was great. The graphics really did push the PSX hardware to the limit, it was one of the best looking games for it's time.

4 was the best ever. 6 better be better than 4 and have a new innovative driving system(not too real not too fake, ah PGR :))

Ridge Racer V was a good game! It was the first game I ever bought for PS2 and its graphics amazed me!.........well, then it did! I think it was a fun arcadey game and some of the tracks were really good, like the coastal one, and the main city one!.....I like the commentary and the music and the cars were cool because they were dream manufacturers with dream livery's.......I think it was a good game to start of the PS2's life! :) 👍

............however, thats were me and ridge racer parted......and judging by the recient ridge racer attempts that I think is where most people parted with the series aswell!

realy it was my first game too but it sucked so much since it was my only PS2 game i stuck to my old PS games till i got a new game so i would have to play that game

I dont see why you hated the game
I personally liked the game, although it couldve been better.
It was still a good arcade game.

People still complaining about physics in 'arcade racer' huh~
I personally think RR series was pretty awesome... When I played in in the arcade I had more fun playing RR than InD (Possibly cause its cheaper :) )... It was refreshing really... I never played a game that made the car go sideways like that before... I just can't believe people are comparing this game to GT... Sure they are racing games but RR doesn't even have real cars!! It is pure arcade and thats the joy of it... BTW... I hope the RR coming out for PSP is good... So far I only heard good news from review sites...

altezza drifter
i think its cause im more in to realizim
yeah rite you prolly sucked at the game so u are mad at it, haha

rr5 was da best, i loved DRIFTING around the corners but i don't think i ever got the secret cars... sux

Rage Racer was a good game.Had awesome tracks.I couldn't find it anywhere in the store back then so i resorted to renting it.I never played through the entire game.

Hey, I don't stop by here (or much else besides GT3), by chance I just decicded to look by new posts and found 'Ridge Racer V'. Well, first off, It's safe to say I'm a hardcore fan of the entire serries, I've played and beat just about all of them save for the first (Since I never got it), I have RRT4 and RRV, and I want to find and buy RR1, RRR (Ridge Racer Revolution) and Rage Racer.

My famdom for that is not too obcessive I guess (I have neary all the music tracks, and even have made a number of fan-art drawings of the cars in the game, prob gonna start again...)... RR is one of the top 3 racing serries I'm very loyal to a degree (the other two are Need For Speed (not really for Undeground), and Gran Turismo)... there are some others (Rally cross for the PS1 and Cart World serries, also for PS1) but Ridge Racer I think ranks no 2 for best racing game in my book.

Yes I'm aware RRV could have been better, but hell, given how they had less than a year between Ridge Racer Type 4 and this, and could have deleyaed for a later release, RRV overall is still a preaty solid title. It's no Gran Turismo but then it's never been really down the path of a Simulator, it's always been an addictive arcade game, be it no 5 or the last 4 (I will never consider R_Racing revolution to be another RR, it's not and even the developers or so I recall said so, the next RR is comming but I bet they aren't going to say much about it... but this is just me...).

I finished ALL of it, I managed to beat, Easy and jumped to Hard and more or less dominated but not without tons of trail and difficulty. The best cars to defeat hard in my opnion are the Rivelta Soalre and Himmel E.O., but the better of the two is the Solare due to it can corner faster than the Himmel. The Himmel is a car I feel that has a sligh margin of safety to screw up a little due to it's acceleration (but emphasis on little)... the Solare is a double ediged sword, it'll either be your best ally or your worse enemy, it's a car I've very well mastered.

But to the rest of the game, again, it seams preaty solid, yes I would have wanted more cars and even more tracks but hell, given how the game behaves, I think the 6 primary cars and their upgraded varriants fill in the bill preaty well in addtion to the four duel cars and the bonus machines.

Overall if I were to rate RRV, I'd give it a 9'5 out of 10, it's very good, plus it's got some stuff that PD has yet to do due to obvious limitations (14 cars but then again most of them are littearly slow save for the Maximum leauge where they all run like hell, same for the 99 trail run...) and such, but otherwise, I like the game a lot, if anyone were to bash it... well... that's them... not me...

Sorry if I failed to make too much sense but well...oh well I guess...in short, RRV is a good game, it's not GT but that was never the aim (or so I figure)...till later...

yep Rage racer was the best in my books, it was the first racer in my books where u could upgrade ur car:) and for a racer where u couldn't turn around i mastered the 360 degree turn:D also i loved the soundtrack for it any1 remember Mathemabeat or Silver stream:D:D

In Rageracer I loved the crappy time of day effects. You would enter a tunnel and the sky is blue, once leaving said tunnel the sky has transformed to a dusky orange in a matter of seconds.

I still have 3 ridge racer games, the first one running at 60fps and hi res and R4 for ps1 and RRV for ps2.

Its the bonus Disc that came with R4. It has the original running at 30fps and 320x240 and a hi fi mode running at 60fps and 640x480. They mention after a few years they got better with programming and found out how to get the best out of the Ps1. R4 was orgianlly running at 60fps but they decided to add more detail to make it one of the best looking racing gasmes on PS1 ever.

Sorry to reserect an old thread but I took ridge racer 5 of the shelf today and thought I would have a go and I had forgotten quite how much fun it was......Its now really hard to deal with the heavly arcadey physics since playing GT4 for ages.

Anyway I have a few questions, if anyone could help it would be great.

I completed the game upto the Heroic GP in Extra Class (and thats when you get the end credits video thingy).......What are you supposed to do after that? Isnt there something where you duel people to get new cars?.....plus what happens if you win the 99 trial.....I only came 2nd......

Also, Is there anyway to get the music off the game.....I was thinking of plugging a double ended 3.5mm headphone jack, one side into the TV's output and one into the computers microphone port and then use sound capture software which I have to mp3 it..... will that work or is that connection wrong? I can't get that type of music anywhere online!

Thanks In advance.....

Robin

I did rent Ridge Racer V once, but I didn't understood the control much & didn't spend time playing with it... Once I lift the trottle the car drift & when I brake the car still drift... Oh well(Don't bash me I didn't tried the game for more than 15min)

I really liked Ridge Racer Type 4 Jazzy/techno music along in the race. The control were easy to understand.

Rage Racer. The first game I used Manual Transmission. The car appearance change once the car get tuned. (There's a song where you hear Deap the whole time if I remember well...)

Ridge Racer revolution.... Never played...

Ridge Racer I just played at the arcade when I was 11, I was proud I beat an adult in that time, LOL!

Whatever people will say, this game is the one in america that make people like to drift in games.

THe psp version is fun and goes back to its roots with removing the grip cars. Now they have 3 different drift types. I own ther PSP version and I'd buy the next one.
RR is the number 1 selling PSP game in europe from what I heard. Also the psp has already sold 185,000 in the first week.

I still have RRV my first ps2 game.
