Well me and my brother just came back from a week long trip at the Nurburgring by far the best experience i've had so far. Brilliant atmosphere at the track everyone seemed to be very helpfull for 'First timers'. My brothers Evo heled up well at the track exept the brakes were like sqeezing two blocks of wood together . While we went round the track i took the time to compare it to GT4 and i do have to admit the game was pretty close to the real thing (obviously not the bumps and the 'G's etc) otherwise the game gave a really good guide to what position the corners were at and how tight they were but the game did lack a bit on the landscape side trees, spectator points etc. And i don't think i've ever seen so many porsche's in my life  there was a wide and very stunning range of cars at the 'Ring' starting from your everyday 1.4 VW Lupo to the stunning Audi R8 (Boy what a car!) we only managed to fit 14 laps because of the dammed brakes :banghead: it was 64 euros for 4 laps which i found kinda expensive but still it didn't put me off the whole experience. Well i'll post a few pictures of us going round but i'll get by posting pictures of the cars when i get round to it (Lots of photos).

I've been considering a Ring trip for a while, so I have a few questions:

OK, many questions:

Where did you stay?
How did you cross the Channel?
How long did it take?
Most importantly, overall, how much did it cost?

More as I think of them.

More pictures please!

Will try and get more pictures soon :D
we took the ferry from Hull to Rotterdam which was £309 there and back whith cabins. We managed to get a room at the Hotel An Der Nordschleife which was right alongside the track but you would have to book very early in advance because it's quite a popular hotel it seems it cost us 75 euros for a double or 40 euros for a single room. Ah now the journey this was long for us because we lived in North Wales so we took the ferry from Hull to Rotterdam because it would cost to much in petrol to go all the way down to Portsmouth or Dover the journey to Hull took us roughly 3 hours and the ferry from Hull to Rotterdam took about 11 hours which was handy really you could get a good nights sleep on the way. The journey from Rotterdam to Nurburg was a pretty hefty one about 5 hours drive. It cost us around £1200 inc. accomadation etc but most of it was due to fuel costs of the Evo the thing drinks fuel like theres no tomorrow  . I found this site quite usefull check it out for yourself if you want hope it helps :Dhttp://www.nurburgring.org.uk/

And yes i did go in the Ring Taxi cost around 180 euros worth every penny if you ask me :D

Yeah, I've read through Ben Lovejoy's site many a time. I was interested in hearing it from a fellow GTPer though :D

Oh yes, I missed the North Wales bit. Sorry.

What insurance did you need/is your brother with? Presumably they're Ring-friendly.

Thank you for the info!

Well he's with AA but i would recommend going with ADAC they are they only company that covers the ring we know someone who went with them and it was only £40 for the weekend and they can then take the car to the UK where it will be picked up in this case by the AA.

Wow. That sounds really fun. I would really love to do something similar, but I'm really scared that I would send my car into the ditch or run into something.

14laps? I'm guessing they weren't consecutive, because I'm sure the person driving might start to get a little tired.

Can you bring a rental car on the 'Ring?
yes you can, but most rental companies do not allow their cars to be taken on the nordschleife. so there is either a good chance that you might run into lots of trouble or you'll have to look really hard for a company that will allow you to do it.

Why does 64 Euros seem so cheap to run laps at the 'Ring? Its about $200 to do a test-and-tune at the local racetrack here on "open" days, and while thats an unlimited amount of laps (on a 2.0 mile course), its nowhere near as awesome as the 'Ring...

Worth every penny I'd say!

Unless of course, you don't tell them.

The Nordschleife is a public toll road. Unless you're specific about where you're going, who's to know?

No those 14 laps were through the whole week we were there.

That was for 4 laps round the ring it cost us round 256 euros in total but we couldn't use the last two laps due to the Evos discs :banghead:

It's pretty easy to get away with it. My dad and I even accidentally left our map of the track and surrounding area in the car after we brought it back to the rental place...yet there were no angry phone calls or credit card charges.

You'll be jealous now...it was €15 for one lap when I went. I guess it's €19 now.

Do they have GPS trackers? Some American rental companies do.

Also, the risk is tremendous, I would think. I wouldn't be surprised if you weren't on your own liability-wise by doing that.

I was just going to say that - whereas you would easily be able to do it and get away with it, you'd be well and truly stuffed if you had an accident. Clearly, rental companies do not cover you for track day usage for a reason - the reason being that people have a tendency to prang cars on race tracks. If you're willing to basically drive uninsured and take the full whack of any repair costs if you did have an accident, then you could be OK. However, if you did have accident, you'd have to consider that the rental company would find out that you were in breach of your rental agreement, so you may need to consider what action they might take because of that...

Spot on TM.

In addition you would have the issue of a lot of break-down/recovery companies don't cover the 'ring as standard, so you would have the recovery costs to add it. On top of that you will be charged for any damage to the track, armco, clean-up etc. An accident at the 'ring and wind up costing you a far bit if you try and 'hide' it from insurance companies, etc.

and just think about what happens if you accidentally take out a biker and injure him without any insurance covering...

Sounds like you had an awesome time, shame about the brakes.

Pity you're a gog, I always thought it'd be nice to have a few more Welsh members.

While i don't personally know the laws in germany when insurance comes into play, I do know at my local track (Oulton park) that before you enter the pit lane, your road insurance has to be signed off for temporary purposes. This happened to be one of the reasons I saw a grown man cry last year, he wrote of 25,000 pounds of subaru, when he had an argument with a nasty bit of rumble strip in the wet. Needless to say he had to pay the track owners recovery costs since his car was buried upside down with the famous sti bonnet scoop half wedged in the in field. After that it was a case of salvaging the bits that were still untouched and using them to pay off whatever other bills the track may or may not have charged him.

This was his own car, but if he had have hired it he could have been facing other legal issues e.g being sued by hire company for many possible reasons.

That being said, you can hire cars for track day use, however these are very high rates, and the cars tend to be racing spec. I haven't seen a road car for hire on track days.

I seem to remember my mum saying, that rally cars could be insured for some tarmac events for very high rates, though no insurance company would go near a forest event, why doesn't that surprise me :D

Most track days have seperate days for bikers and cars, but i cannot really speak for the ring, i don't know.

In fact, local car rental companies hire people to scout for rental cars on the track. You're also not insured on the ring.

Rental cars on the ring = bad idea.

You pay our money and you can take anything onto the 'ring; bike, car, van, bus.

And no I'm not joking about the last one, have a read of the following for a description of bike/car/bus incidents...

Wow, that must make it an even more exceptional event, having such a broad variety of motors, I now have a new entry for things to do before I die, I must say I haven't known much about the Nordschlife and its famous track days.

That's odd. Last year, november first, I paid € 59 for 4 laps. It's still expensive.

* ... or was it € 56 for 4 laps?

Is Interlagos (Autodromo JCP) ever open to public?

I think so but I don't know any details about it. Interlagos is pretty far too, a twelve or so hours road trip.

I'd imagine the Nordschleife is further...?
