After that it was a case of salvaging the bits that were still untouched and using them to pay off whatever other bills the track may or may not have charged him.
thats why you always get chatty with someone who has a trailer at a trackday :) many a time ive seen cars crash at trackdays then being towed several miles down the road before calling for recovery.

On the hire car thing, heard a great story around 8 years ago.my uncle was working at the BMWUK HQ in england and was renting with a race driver(my uncle mostly worked in bmw germany at the time) and was invited down a week before his wedding.Douglas (the race driver) was just back from the ring a few days before and i was asking what it was like.he had hired a BMW 316 and took it to the nurburgring as it just happened to be on the way to the place he was going. On the 18th! lap the suspension failed on it  after being towed back to the car park he had seen one of the guys he used to race with and asked him if he could tow him a few miles down the road.when he got it back to the rental place they had asked him if he had took it to the nurburgring and he said he hadnt! although the rental company knew he did take it there but couldnt prove it.
