Mum rang me today, and informed me, adim a flood of tears, that our faithful friend of 14 years had to be sent to the big doggie kennel in the sky today.

He has had problems with his bowels in the past, and one side of his bowels had collapsed a couple of years ago. All was going well until this morning when the other side collapsed and pinched his bladder closed. The vet told Mum that there was an operation available, but that the most we could expect would be a few months before it needed doing again, and that he would be in a fair amount of pain. The decision was made to put the poor guy out of his misery, he will be cremated and his ashes spread over his most favorite place (Campsite 10 at Lyrup Flats).

He was a very loyal Papillon, who had an almost unnatural obsession with anything even remotely resembling a ball (he had been known to bring back a single panel from a tennis ball). More than a little dopie, and completely lovable, nicknamed Sir Lick-A-Lot, Ponnie, Honey Badger (don't ask), Backie, he was a true part of our family, and will be sorely missed.

Happy yip-dreams ponsta.

Sorry, I had to vent

Our doggie of 17 years died last August. It's always hard when they go as they are so loyal and such a major part of the family.

My heart goes out to ya man.

Thanks DQuaN, Mum was the hardest hit, as his companionship was a major player in bringing herself out of chronic depression, she would have mortgaged the house and sold everything she owned if it meant he could live on with a decent quality of life.

Sorry to hear about that Goose.

Never had a dog myself, but I was upset when I guinea pigs died 8 years ago.

Thanks guys, your words are much appreciated, and i will pass them on to Mum and the rest.

I've had a few dogs die over the years. It's never easy. My current dog is a 7 year old Husky. She'll run away again before she dies.

Sorry to hear that. We have had two cats put down over the last 10 years due to old age. Never easy to go through with it, but it's for the best.

Our sympathies on Baxter's passing. I've got a 15-year-old cat facing renal failure and a few other things who may be in that situation soon.

I'm very sorry to hear that. I've never owned a dog, so I don't properly know what it's like to have one pass away, so I can't say much more...

One of my pet budgies passed away the other week, which was upsetting too.

Sorry to hear Gooseter. :(
I've lost a couple of long time pets in the past, and I know its sad at first, but afterwards you'll realize they left this world but also left you with memories that will last you a life time.

It's never nice to lose a pet, especially when it's like a cat or dog where they've been with you for so many years. When I was living at home we had a white Persian cat, she died with kidney failure in the first hour of January the 1st 2000.

Luckily for me, I've never had a pet that I was close to die. However, I have 3 animals that I am very close to and I know it's inevitable. My sympathies go out to everone who is affected.

Very sorry to hear that, Goose. I can completely relate to you because my mum had to put her rottie to sleep about two years ago and like with your mum, the dog was her companion. In fact, I sometimes got jealous she loved the dog more than myself. But still, it was like another family member.

Actually, when that happened, I vowed never to have another dog. But last July we got a new one. It sort of landed on our lap, so to speak. But even now, when I have this new dog, I'm glad I mourned the previous one enough. I spent about 4 years without owning another pet.

Again, my condolences. I know exactly what your mum and yourself are going through. It's funny, when someone's dog dies you feel nothing, until it's your own. Think at least that Baxter loved to give love, and he (Baxter is a he, right?) gave it 'til the very end.

Thanks again guys, for you kind words, and sympathies to everyone who has lost someone dear to them whether it be a pet or a human.

@Diego, Yes Baxter is a He, and he really did give his love until the very end, and his memory lives on in Gilbert, the young Papillon that learnt all Baxter's bad habits (including trying to procreate with the cats!)

Sorry to hear for your loss, my sympathies.

I have lost 3 long time pets in a 1 year period (last year), they were part of the family, it was very hard.

Thankyou everyone, for your kind words, I passed the message on to mum, and she sends her gratitude as well.
