Hey, welcome to the boards fallfast 👍

Nice car you got there, I'm very jealous. However, I'll be not the last perosn to ask you this, but it's usual that people place a sign with something like "fallfast @ GTPlanet" on the engine or on the car just so we know you are not claiming things that you don't have ;)

Second, are you planning to use this car for track racing? Maybe it's just me and my foreigner english type of thing, but the title "Road Race Mustang" makes me think you're building a car that you are about to race on the open roads, against regulations. So if I misunderstood, sorry, the thread title is just a little bit misleading then :)

Otherwise, have fun in here, good luck with the car

He said SCCA (Sports Car Club of America), the guys who put together a lot of amateur road (track) racing in the US, and formerly, the Trans Am series, so, I wouldn't be too worried about open road racing. Probably more Solo-2.

In the US, "Track" racing typically refers to the type that only turns left.

I refer to that as oval racing. A track is a track. There are roadcourses, autocrosses, ovals, rallycrosses, etc.

Anyway, welcome to GTP Fallfast. That Mustang is a pretty decent starting point for a track car. It's got a good front suspension design, being double-wishbone, and there's plenty of parts out there to make that solid rear end handle.

Now you just need to make sure you can drive it well...:sly:

Welcome fallfast! Glad to see there's more people here than just me that love Mustangs. I'm pretty jealous of that thing to say the least.

As far as appearance goes, have you considered lowering it about an inch or so and adding a Mach 1 chin spoiler?

I appreciate the comments everyone. In reference to lowering it, i am planning on doing a full front and rear coilover conversion. Takes some money, but is a lot better for racing then throwing on a set of springs. Being adjustable has its benefits, and they feel a lot better on the road. I am a long ways from getting finished with the car, but its getting there. I was gonna do the mach 1 chin spoiler, but i am gonna be replacing my front fascia with a Cobra R front and try and find a front splitter for it too.

Hey nice ride man, looks fantastic. I like the mods so far. Lets get some videos up!

Well i have that one posted with the pictures. I do have one with me at the 1/8 mile track, but i ran awful times. Main reason i believe i ran such horrible times is that the car is being set up for road racing, and i have no weight in the back. When i took off, i just sat there and spun, when i shifted gears i spun. Not good. I also think that i didnt do a long enough burnout and my tires were still wet when i launched. I was a little dissappointed at first, but i just reminded myself that this car isn't set up for that type of racing.

Have you worked out how much weight you lost when you striped the interior?

Not yet. Stock the curb weight of my mustang is 3,071lbs. Here is what i removed...
spare tire /jack
All trunk interior linings
rear interior pieces
carpet
rear seats
passanger seat
rear/pass seatbelts
interior roof lining
center console
currently removing sound deadener

i have added some weight with the exhaust system and subframe connectors, and the major weight adder will be when i eventually install a 6-point rollcage. Fairly soon i will be removing the AC compressor (need to pick-up a bypass pulley) and all the AC system components. I think i probably would have removed a total of 150lbs (rough guess). It is definitely noticable though. A lot more pick-up accelerating. I will eventually ditch my current rims though, and go with some lightweight cobra r's.

I am a scca member. striping out my interior like your car took me clean out of STX and put me in EM.

One word of advice.... out drive your current mods.. when they began to restrict you then.. and only then do you upgrade. Auto-x is not about adding an entire catalog to your car. As you have seen, miata's in their class run fast times and could even beat other cars with better brand suspension and tires just based on overall car control.

have fun man its a blast as i did auto-x in between drift events to fill the void.

I lost 160~180lbs when I stripped my Camaro's interior out. You should of lost at least as much if not more.

Just so you know, the burnouts were probably what hindered your tires' grip. Your usual street tires aren't designed to cope with the high heat that a burnout generates. Only proper racing slick tires are designed specifically to work well when they're warm, and drag racing slicks especially. Heating up street tires breaks down the compound and hurts it more than anything. High performance summer tires can handle more than average, but they're still nothing compared to race tires.

Yea, I wasnt trying to really heat up the tires, i was just trying to clean them off a bit before i ran, but do think i will skip the waterbox next time. I did drive around it the first time i went a few years ago. I did run better times then, but i was running with the stock 15's, lol.

What is up with all of the "I'm gonna be a pro- racer/drifter/rally driver" threads lately?

No offense or anything, this appears to be the most legit of the threads. Given the amount of money you are considering for the handling department, any plans to swap in a V8?

If you see, he just wants to do it for fun on the weekends.
You could turbo it, I have seen a few turbo'd stang v6's and the ran like a bat outa hell

They can easily get over 400hp in turbo form for not too much money. 👍

As far as power is concerned, i am set at the moment. I am focusing more on handling and getting the most outta what i got. When i do get the money, i will probably try and pick up a used vortech or ProCharger. Right now, the suspension is going to be priority one. As most of you know, when it comes to this type of racing its not all about how much HP you got, but more about how you get that power to the ground.

As i mentioned before, this is just going to be a weekend/fun thing for me to do. I already got a good job that allows me to bring home some extra money when i need it. Sad to say, but the Mustang comes in fourth place, behind the wife and 3 kids.

nice motor .. i dont like that front bumper tho get it off and get a new flat one..

What type of SCCA racing are you looking at? Solo, American Sedan, or Touring 2?

If its anything but Solo you'll need a full roll cage by SCCA requirements.
