I smell a rat :sly:

Walking the tightrope of packaging, power and technology the way exotic carmakers like Ferrari and Lamborghini do is a delicate act. Sometimes that act comes tumbling down, occasionally in a ball of flame. This week in Moscow, however, it's rats that are taking the blame.

Yes, rodents are bearing the brunt of the burned-down Ferrari. Purchased in a Moscow showroom just thirty minutes before the fire, the car was a heavily modified 2006 model - which model was not disclosed - valued at $814,000, according to Russian news outlets.

The car had three previous owners before the young woman who would be its last owner bought the car. As she was driving through Moscow on Tuesday, witnesses reported a thick black smoke bellowing from under the hood. It burned completely within minutes. The owner escaped the incident without injury.

Speculation as to the cause is all there is to be had, as investigators don't yet know the cause with certainty. A dealership representative told the Russian paper Kommersant, "Anything could happen during these three years including rats gnawing the wires through."

The irony of a mere rat defeating a Prancing Horse is surely not lost in translation.

So would Ferrari wiring be like gourmet food to them?
No Lada wires for these rats.

But aren't they suposed to inspect the car after/before selling it ?

I don't know... it's too strange, maybe they want to burn the car up.

Rats do a fair bit of damage to cars that syaty parked for a while; engine bays are dark and have lots of crevices. Many cars that are parked for 6 months have rats that chew up wires and plastic bits under the hood.

Of course, this "heavily-modified" Ferrari might have had a few bugs to go with the rodents.

Thats just a poor excuse by the dealer and by Ferrari to try to cover up a more inherent problem in the car, since this isnt the first 599 to have caught fire in a similar manner.

Anyway here is a link to the story with some quite graphic pictures (so kids you have been warned!)

Ferrari isn't claiming anything, and no one said rats are the primary cause. The dealership rep did say, "Anything could happen during these three years including rats gnawing the wires through."
Ferrari enthusiasts have already known what it is the most probable cause for these fires that happen in Ferraris.

You claim it isn't the first 599, but you then link to an article talking about a 612 Scaglietti....

The woman clearly followed standard procedure.

Is it only me who thought of this:

When the words rodent, Ferrari and burnout were mentioned?...

It was only me? I'll get me coat.

I think they need to hire someone for their proof-reading. ;)

The driver of the 2006 grey Ferrari and the passenger, both aged 20, were the sons of top managers of a Moscow bank, a Moscow law enforcement official said. The father of one of the boys quickly arrived at the scene of the accident in his Mazeratti.

$814,000 sounds a bit ridiculous, especially since mods on Ferraris usually bring the value down a lot. I also find it kind of hard to believe that they searched through the whole pile of rubble that was left of the car and are saying that it was some small wires that could have melted during the fire.
