Probably not mean much to GTPlanetarians outside of the UK, but comedian Ronnie Barker has died :( :( :(

http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/entertainment/tv_and_radio/473779.stm

Famous for being one of 'The Two Ronnies', Fletcher in 'Porridge', and Arkwright in 'Open All Hours' (to name but a few), Ronnie Barker was a legend and one of the greatest comedy performers ever to grace our screens. Sad to see you go... :indiff:

Ronnie was fantastic. His timing was always spot on. He made me laugh so much.

This is really sad and unexpected. He was very old, but was he ill?

RIP Ronnie. :(

:D I found it! Hurrah! Been looking for it everywhere, but with some super-advanced Googling, I found a transcript of the legendary Mastermind sketch! 👍 Barker is the quizmaster and Corbett the contestant, whose specialist subject is answering the question before last...

Q: "And so to our first contender. Good evening and can I have your name, please?"

A: "Ah...good evening."

Q: "What is the difference between a donkey and an ass?"

A: "One's a trade union leader, the other's a member of the Cabinet."

Q: "Correct. Complete the quotation ... "To be or not to be..." "

A: "They're both the same."

Q: Correct. What is Bernard Manning famous for?"

A: "That is the question."

Q: "Correct. Who is the present Archbishop of Canterbury?"

A: "He's a fat man who tells blue jokes."

Q: "Correct. What do people lean on in church?"

A: "The Right Reverend Robert Runcie."

Q: "Correct. What do tarantulas prey on?"

A: "Hassocks."

Q: "Correct. What would you use a ripcord to pull open?"

A: "Large flies."

Q: "Correct. What sort of person lived in Bedlam?"

A: "A parachute."

Q: "Correct. What is a jockstrap?"

A: "A nutcase."

Q: "For what purpose would a decorator use methylene chlorides?"

A: "A form of athletic support."

Q: "Correct. What did Henri Toulouse-Lautrec do?"

A: "Paint strippers."

Q: "Correct. Who is Dean Martin?"

A: "Erm..he's a kind of artist."

Q: "Yes...what kind of artist?"

A: "Erm...pass."

Q: "That's near enough. What make of vehicle is the standard London bus?"

A: "A Singer."

Q: "Correct. In 1892, Brandon Thomas wrote what famous long-running English farce?"

A: "Charlie's Aunt."

Very sad that he has gone. The master of plays on words, spoonerisms and other linguistic foibles has added much to the book of wit and helped groom such stalwarts of the comedy/drama field as David Jason.

But at least in recent years he got honoured the way he should've been and even got a chance to work with Mr. Corbett once more before he left.

Noooo what shall we do he was one of the best comdey people of his time. He will be missed RIP.

I heard this on the radio this morning, sad to see someone who was so ****ing funny go.

Well i'm going to watch that dvd with one episode of Porridge and one episode of Open All Hours in memorial. :D

R.I.P Ronnie :( He made me laugh for so many years ... its not the first time he has brought tears to my eyes.

It's goodnight from him for the last time! .... Respect to a great man 👍

That's pretty funny - kind of like a somewhat more intellectual Benny Hill. I can't say I was familiar with Mr. Barker's work, but I trust you guys when you say he will be missed.

Sorry to hear of his passing.
Another Brit comic genius gone. He'll be in good company, I'm sure Benny invited him in.
R.I.P. Ronnie
(Thanks for the laffs).

R.I.P Ronnie Barker.
I loved The Two Ronnies. That show was hilarious. They were back not too long ago with 'The Two Ronnies sketchbook' which was very good, did anyone see it?

i use to watch the shows every week at my nanas when i was a kid, couldn't stop laughing! i always enjoyed the songs they sung, and who could forget the phantom raspberry blower of old london town? classic stuff! he will definitely be remembered as one of our greatest comic talents.

rest in peace ronnie barker!

RIP
My condolences to his family and his many, many fans.

Myself included.

This is a sad week for comedy.
