I wasnt sure if I should post this in the games section or in here since it deals with both. Here is the problem:
About 2 years ago we decided to start playing online. Ok thats is simple just get a network adapter then plug the cable from the modem into the PS2. Ok yes it worked very easy. Then later we wanted 2 PS2 hooked up so we got a router and excellent it worked 2 PS2 online at same time and computer. Here comes the confusion.
This weekend we tried to just hook up a PS2 or the X-box without the router and now they dont work. They must run thru the router to get online.
My friend bought an x-box over the weekend and couldnt get online when he plugged it in directly either. So I told him to just buy a router and it worked. Yes very confusing isnt it. :dunce:
Why would he need a router to get online with a new x-box or ps2?

A router is necessary if you intend to hook up multiple computers/game consoles because each device will need to be assigned an ip address. Without an ip address for each device, only one can be used at any given time. Also, the router gives each device a dynamic (changing) ip address and not a static (unchanging) one as the router uses the static ip address as it's own. The static ip address is also usually the ip address given to whatever device(i.e. a router) is registered with your broadband provider and allows you to have many other devices connected to the router at the same time without having to pay for multiple static ip addresses.

I've heard from my broadband provider that a router is unneeded for using game consoles on the internet but I think that's really not true if you intend to use a computer(s) or multiple game consoles at the same time.

I hope that helps.

My systems used to play online before I bought the router. Then I bought the router and they stil worked. Now if I try to play them without the router hooked up they dont work. I plug the cable directly from the modem into the PS2 it doesnt work now but it used to. So I just keep it hooked thru the router now.
My friend had the exact same problem.

I have a wireless network and was having some problems awhile ago. I connect mine with a wireless bridge to my wireless router, but I have to use a CAT5 Cable or a cable slower than that or else it doesn't work. Their DYDNS thingy, or whatever that is, doesn't initialize correctly so it doesn't connect. CAT6 is what I tried that didn't work.
