I thought this would be the best place to post this.

I am just wondering if anyone has had any trouble with RSI. I figure you all play a lot of games and use the computer a lot (duh, this is a website based on a game :D)

Why I ask is because I have trouble with my fingers, hands, wrists and arms. I am still able to play games and use the computer. It is just if I use them to much, the pain gets worse. My joints in those areas also click, which isn't very pleasent.

I have been to three different Doctors, they didn't help much. Got a blood test and an x ray, that didn't help. Went to a Physiotherapist and that didn't help. I have also tried other things like oils and the Powerball, they didn't seem to have any effect. It worries me sometimes that I will have this for the rest of my life and it will get worse. :scared:

My Dad has organised another Physiotherapist, I am most likely going to go to that. I will start using the Powerball again, maybe it will help. I just wanted to know if any of you have had any experience with this or know anything that can help me out. It would mean so much to me if I could get rid of this. So any help you can offer would be much appreciated. :)

Clicking of joints is quite common, when it happens it produces gas bubbles which can lead to Arthritis, nothing you can do about it tbh, probably better to click as sometimes I find my joints seize up if I don't click, which hurts a lot more.

Yes, sounds like you have RSI, don't bother with a Physiotherapist unless you like wasting money. Rest it for a week, see it how it is after that.

I hate to say this but you might have to cut down on your gaming and texting. Repetive Strain Injury is just that, an injurying from doing repetive things and the only way to fix it is to stop doing what makes it sore. You should always break for 10mins of every hour if doing anything repetitive.

I had mild RSI in my right hand for a while, and it went away in almost no time when I ditched my multi-button mouse – clicking on those buttons surprisingly strains your hand quite a bit.

I used to have it very badly. I just started typing with better posture and it helped a lot. It still comes and goes though

I'm pretty sure this generation os going to have issues later on with carpal tunnel and arthritis and the like because of the text message and keyboard. Our only hope is if writing causes it too, in which case we might experience the same level as older generations. Being a joint-doctor is a job that will have a very good outlook in the next fifty years.

I had RSI in my right arm and back from poor posture and a lousy mouse.

It was on-and-off for about 8 months, but now it seems gone for good. *knock on wood* I know these things never go away completely and I will probably always be more likely to injure those muscles/joints.

That's a myth IIRC.

The gas bubbles part is true, but the Arthritis part is a myth I do believe.

Ease up on the bannings :p

Funny (well, maybe not so funny) you should mention that, since I am currently wearing a thumb-brace on my left hand due to a very painful left thumb. I don't know what I've done to it, but it's been sore for quite some time, and it is very painful when I move my thumb in the wrong direction - unfortunately this means that playing PS2 and playing guitar are out, and most other activities are extremely difficult, esp. at work. I'm not sure if it is RSI related, but I've certainly put my thumbs through their paces on the old PS2 in recent years, but that said, I didn't really play much at all in the whole of 2006, except for the UKGTP meetings of course! Anyway, as a precaution, I'm resting my hand for as long as it takes to start feeling better... :(👍 (<--- artist's impression of me)

Oh come on, someone had to say it!

Have you seen a GP about it? If not, you may have fracture of some kind. I broke my left thumb (right in the middle joint) about six months ago and even to this day I'm having a bit of difficulty with it (soreness, reduced ROM). You probably should get it looked at.

It had to be you, didn't it Cracker!

I have seen my GP about it, and will get it X-rayed soon. In the meantime, I'm using the thumb-brace and an anti-inflammatory gel. I'm just glad it's not my right hand. (And Cracker, that's not RSI you're talking about... it's technical term is RWI)

I'll have to tell mum off for putting things in my head.

Though I might get arthritis anyway as there's a bit of family history with it. I've never noticed joint pains from clicking my fingers, I can't really not do it though, my joints 'lock up' plus the fact I'm double jointed they do move a fair bit than they should. Particularly my shoulder, I can move it out of it's joint a bit, if I could bare the pain I could probably pop it out. But I don't know as I've never tried it obviously.

One of the Doctors that I went to said that the clicking was just normal. It's not normal to me though, because my joints never clicked like this before.

If there is no point in going to a Physiotherapist, then is there anything else that can help? Other than rest, which I have done a lot already.
I have had to drop out of studying for my Degree in Multimedia Design due to not being able to use the Compouter enough to get the work done. Was into the third year too. So my future isn't looking too bright at the moment. :( Sorry if I am sounding a little depressed.

Thanks for all the replies though, really appreciate it 👍

In that case, Sage has to worry about going blind, not about RSI. :D

You're bound too feel rough.

A physio won't be able to do anything, the best recovery of RSI is rest, so you allow all the muscles/joints to get back to how they should work. I know someone who's got about 27 years of paramedic and now paramedic practioner experience and he's quite good, I'll ask him about it if you want.

I was two years into a three computing degree (with a career to follow obviously) when I started to get pain in my wrists when I typed...

:nervous: :scared:

Then after about two weeks it went away and hasn't been back. Thank God.

The cracking of knuckles is nothing compaired to the every day abuse the joints go through in every day normal use.
He hasn't met my ex-gf then...

I occasionally have RSI troubles when I spend too much time gaming. Hours of repeated mouse movements in real time strategy games affect my right elbow, and A-speccing the 24 hour endurance races affected both my wrists.

To ease the pain I would cease using the PC/PS2 for a few days, or restrict myself to just a half hour twice a day in the case of web-surfing. Usually that would take care of it, though I would normally take it easy for the next couple of weeks.

I have found that since I got a new chair and altered my computer setup that I have been less prone to it than before. Proper posture, and an ergonomic setup can do wonders.

That would be nice of you, any help I can get is appreciated. 👍

I try and cut down on my PS2 and PC usage, it is hard with a great site like this one to go to. :)

I really think I need a new computer desk, the desk I have at the moment doesn't help at all me thinks.

I've PM'd him Drift, shouldn't be too long for a reply.

I'll be honest, Nigel.

If the guy's been to three Doctors and several physios, taken the advice from them and he's not recovering I'd have to suspect there's more to his problem than RSI...and not physical

Doctors and physios aren't magicians. Recovery requires advice, taking the advice, the will to recover and time.

Good luck to him, but RSI doesn't come on over a couple of months, it's a long term thing and even longer term to recover.

I know that's not what you wanted to hear but in cases like this it's better to be honest.

To quote his reply to my PM.

Thanks for that Sureshot, thank your friend too. Sounds like he knows what he is talking about. 👍

I have to face my problem and get motivated if I want it to go away.
I think my diet might be an issue, who knows though.

Thanks for your help, I really apprecaite it. Hopefully I can get rid of it. :)
