People often talk about GT's "stupid" AI but I think there is a much larger problem with the AI than that. I'm talking about Rubber band AI.

For those of you who don't know what that is, here is a better definition than I could come up with myself....

"Rubberband AI" is a term used to describe a certain type of simple artificial intelligence used primarily in kart and arcade-style racing games . Basically, when your vehicle gets out ahead of the pack, the computer increases the speed of the other vehicles to compensate. When you are behind, the computer will slow the other vehicles down to allow you to catch up. This forces the player to use weapons or nitro boost instead of superior driving skills to beat the computer-controlled racers. Rubberband AI is a source of much frustration (and hair loss) among gamers because it often allows the other racers to go faster than the player, causing the player to lose at the last second."

Not only is rubber band AI found in the single player game but this will also be found in the online mode if you can believe it.👎

Games like Mario Kart and ARCADE Racers have Rubber Band AI, but there it is in GT 5..... and it shouldn't be.

Other SIM racers such as Forza and GTR 2 don't have it so why should it be there in GT 5?

I FIRMLY believe it should be removed from GT 5 altogether but if you have an argument as to why it should stay, I'm more than willing to listen.

I think it would be good to have it as an option you can turn on or off, that way people who aren't as good at the game won't get toasted by the AI.

I think that having easy, medium, and hard AI is a good idea. But I don't believe having Rubber band AI is necessary at all ( as in ever ) even for people who aren't so good at the game. There's just something that seems so wrong about having this kind of AI in a Simulator.

My two cents.

While I agree that Rubberbanding AI is the worst thing to EVER happen to racing games, inculding Mario Kart, I never would have gotten the Arcade Elite trophy in Wipeout HD without it.

I dont think rubberband AI actually exists in GT5P? You can lap the AI on almost every track...

Rubberbanding is not present in Expert Online races... thats all that matters to me... I dont care if its a feature or not because I'll turn it off without thinking anyway... BUT Im sure there are people who WOULD like to use it... So make it a feature that can be turned on or off... 👍

PD should also remove excessive drafting at least from pro mode

Very true... the drafting is a bit overdone... Hope that gets fixed 👍

I would like it to stay but modify it. Say your in an endurance race it would be more realistic if one of the A.I. had a better car towards the end of the race(i.e through adjustments).

Indeed. I've never noticed rubberbanding, except online with human players. And because of this, didn't vote.

I absolutely loathe the rubberband (that's the reason I never finished NFS:MW, even though I wanted, just for kicks back then. I liked the Punto ;) ), but is it present in Prologue? I never had problems with the rubberband, of course there are small differences in AI's times depending on how you do, but not too drastic, I never had the artificial opponents gain on me in slower cars etc.. So it's fine how it's done now.

I voted "hell yes", because cheating AI does not belong in a game that calls it self "the real driving simulator".

It pissed me off to no end in the NFS games. While it's not as extreme in GT, there must be other ways to make the AI a challenge

Rubber banding in GT5:P being removed from the GT5 AI will probably just add another effect to the GT5 AI, but it should still be removed anyway.

I don't think that the Prologue's AI is stupid.
It is the most intelliget AI in GT history, and still people don't like it.
Well if you park a car on the center of Fuji straight most of the AI cars will drive around you even on those high speeds. Sometimes when AI goes to the grass or sand it will wait for a clear space to join the race again.
The only thing not good about the AI for me, is that they are always using racing tires (and I think the AI's physics mode is set to "arcade")

In GT5 we will only see progress. And I'm 99.99% sure that there will be no rubber band effect in GT5.

I dont mind rubber band AI. If I'm so much faster than the AI that I'm gaining a few seconds on them each lap, its boring. Likewise, if I'm so much slower than the AI that I can't keep up, it gets boring.

One problem GTR has had, despite having very intelligent AI, is the requirement to fine tune the AI for each track to ensure you actually have an enjoyable race where the AI isn't terribly faster than you nor terribly slower.

If there's a track that I'm particularly fast on myself, I want the AI to come up to my level. If there's a track I struggle on, I'm happy if the AI slows down a bit to let me keep up.

Kill that thing... Nobody needs that... Or as an Option to turn on or off

If your car is far superior in performance then it should be better than your opponents at all times, no compensation could be made, your opponents should make their cars better or at least drive better.

Yamauchi about rubber band effect during his interview with Ahmed :

"K.Y: "ahhaaa" we but that feature to allow a fair race for everyone for instance, if you started in the 16th position in a rooling start at fuji-speedway there is no way to win the race. also it does help but not that much. its only active when the gap is huge (more than 2 seconds). also there were some event that the RBE were not active. we will only remove it completly only when there is going to be a qualifying laps to sent every on position in the starting grid. Plus only very good and proffesional players will like playing without it active."

I hope you guys realize that they were discussing the online races:

then he asked me whats your favorite track in the game?

i told him suzuka .

then he said ok .. then we'll (put) an event called super-proffesional-event where the RBE will be disabled just for you "and he smiled"

Theres no rubber band AI in GT5P.
The rubber band effect were in the online races but are excluded now from pro events.

1up guys said that AI was really stupid in recent games com show. AI did pit manouver for the player and then every other AI just rushed trouhg player like he was not there. Of course the result was that car was some what damaged but it really did look like car was hit by so many cars in high speed. Rubber band thing can be easily changed but there are still some major issues with AI. I remember that TOCA games have quite good AI and simbin games also.

It should only be in novice mode online. Just to keep the racing as close as possible for newbies and if the people who are good drivers that go into novice mode, well you shouldn't be there in the first place whining about the rubberband effect. What are you just there to bully novice drivers around? Go race with someone your own driving skill set in pro or expert mode.:grumpy::dunce::indiff::dopey::sly:

Actually, I found the Toca A.I. to be rather bland, like the car really was being driven by a robot. However, I saved plenty of (now corrupted dang it!) replays where the bots would wreck into me, one after the other, it was quite funny. While they still worked anyhow. And Simbin's bots remind me a lot of Toca's but a bit stupider, such as clogging a chicane and all of them grinding through it. It was the most appalling sight in the world to me to see such log jams ahead of me, and knowing I'd have to plow through that mess.

I would pick Option 3.. Turn it ON or OFF so players can decide.

As far as I'm aware and through testing I've seen others do, there is no rubber banding on GT5:P's AI. It is present in the online modes but not in the expert races.

I voted no just for fun, but rubber must go from simulation mode.

I voted for RBE to be removed altogether, this aint NFS Undercover here.

Rubber banding needs to go. If they want a similar but more realistic effect, make it to where AI is more focused and less prone to mistakes when you're in the lead..

Can't actually say I've seen it in the AI. The problem with the AI is that a 16 car race is really a 1 on 1 with traffic. The lead car is Schumacher the other AI are teenagers who just got their learner's permits, and then there is the player.

Online, the issue was resolved long ago.

If it does exist though, it should never have even been thought of. Get rid of it.

The last game to have rubber banding AI in it was GT3 It wasn't in GT4 so there is no reason to expect it back again in GT5.

Online rubber banding is present in Beginner and Intermediate events in GT5P but not in Expert ones. I expect GT5 will have player selectable options about this.
