Fabled über-performance builder Ruf, the house of mad genius that brought us enthusiast miracles such as the legendary CTR "Yellow Bird," appears ready to knock everyone's socks off once again. This time, the wow factor is attached to the company's new CTR3, a Porsche Cayman-based supercar that makes its debut today in Bahrain, where is likely no shortage of individuals able to pony up the car's projected $300,000 price tag.

Under its aluminum and carbon-fiber skin, which makes the CTR3 look like something that would have appeared right at home dueling the likes of the Toyota GT-ONE, Porsche 911 GT1, and McLaren F1 in LeMans races past, the new RUF has the heart of its bigger and equally insane brother, the 911 RT12. Its 3.8L twin-turbocharged six delivers 700 horsepower and 656 lb-ft of torque, all of which is sent rearward via a rumored seven-speed sequential gearbox. Top speed? Figure around 224 mph. Can an assault on the Nürburgring by this earthbound cruise missile be far off?

Lookswise it's a definite improvment over the Cayman, a car I'm not in love with. Performance wise though, this thing should be an absolute monster. With a price expected to be around the $300,000 (£150,000) mark, it's not been priced above it's rivals either.

Looks pretty good, not sure about that triple slats instead of the rear window treatment.

Yeah, the slats do nothing for me.

Other than that, lovely.👍

Although I'd rather they save the CTR names for 911 variants.

supercars.net slates it at more like 600,000 dollars. aside from that price, its everything i would ever want from a supercar. you have to admit, CTR3 is a bone chilling sweet tag to put on the back of a porsche

Supercars.net is almost as bad a resource for new cars as 30 year old issues of Motor Trend are.

Anyways, I do like this, but shouldn't it be based on the 911, at the very least for tradition?

A 700hp, 224mph...CAYMAN?!?

ohh....kaaaay....well, that's an improvement.

it does resemble the 911 GT1, though.

Hell, yes. Hell freakin' yes!

That much power may get a bit scary without AWD, but it sure as hell sounds like it would be fun for a lap on the 'Ring. The car just looks outrageous, and I'm sure it goes like stink...

If we've learned anything from this, RUF may be the closest thing we have to 'Skunkworks' in the automotive world...

I'm going to use an unlikely word to describe this deal- cute. It is a strange design. But am I willing to give her a drive if it were in GT5? You bet. This almost looks like (dare I use the cliché) a race car for the street. It looks wicked and evil. It looks like your average Porsche up front, but it's a Sabbath from the rear. Good luck looking in the rear view mirrors with this car. Reading the numbers on this car, it should be able to dominate any race track it wants. 700 horsepower? 656 lb-ft of torque? 224 mph tops? Out of 100% approval, I give this car just about 100%. Be very afraid.

By the way, I'm very okay with the Cayman.

Looks ok, I don't know if I like those three slits on the rear window. Just open up the whole thing and it'll be ok. All in all its a good looking car, but I'd still prefer a Carrera GT or a regular 911 GT3.

Wait a sec...I know what this looks like!!!!

Don't make me wash your mouth out with soap! :grumpy: The Carrera GT is the best thing to come out of Porsche...ever...and will be ever. It is the pinnacle of what Porsche means to me. I don't care how much power this new CTR3 has or what it looks like, it is no Carrera GT.

Looks a little out of proportion, looking from the front-upper photo, with the two "buttocks" on both sides of the rear - the rear seems to flow down like a 911 does, but then you get a "butt" which kinda stands out. Is fixed when viewed from the rear, though. And the little peek-holes certainly will cause some trouble in Nurb'-traffic, but otherwise: "Oh yeah!"

So how long will it take before we see a "CTR3 Vs. Carrera GT"?

Ahem.
To each is own, I guess.

Indeed. I like the 959, but the CGT just does it for me in every possible way. I'd actually pay $200 to just ride in the passenger seat of one while someone else drives it.

Not long enough I'm affraid. The CTR3 may be faster (and I suspect it will be) but the Carrera GT is just pure sex.

But yeah, it does look like the GT though

But it doesn't. The front looks nothing like it, the rear looks nothing like it, the side profile doesn't looking anything like it, and the wheels aren't close to being the same. I just don't see how anyone says it even resembles the CGT--because it just doesn't.

OH, come on, blur your eyes and look at each picture. the basic profile's the same. The engine location's the same. Power output is within about 100HP, adn they're both capable of more than 200 mph. not to mention the rear fender profiles...

Actually, come to think of it I can see the resemblence. It looks more like a preproduction example or the Paris Auto Show car than the final car, but a few areas (front airdamn and the hood height in relation to the front fenders) do look quite CGT like. And the way they designed the rear spoiler on the RUF looks shoickingly close. The side profile gets a little blurry, though, and then way the boot lid plunged down on the CGT blurs things a bit.

On the 959: My opinion towards that may be a bit biased, as in my opinion no other car since can beat its legacy, with the only cars that have come close being the two Bugattis. As such, I'm always seen the Carrera GT as more of a newer interpretation of the Ferrari F50 than next great Porsche. Again, to each his own, and the Carrera GT was still a fine car.

The rear slits aren't a problem...

What is it going to be on track with that it's really going to be worrying about coming up behind it?

More info from Autoblog

First things first: Contrary to what was widely reported yesterday (including here), the RUF CTR 3 is not derived from the Porsche Cayman. That makes it no less amazing, as the technical data pasted after the jump bears out. The CTR 3's bodywork is a RUF creation in aluminum and carbon fiber, and the earlier reports stating that the car is Cayman-based were probably a result of the automaker's use of the small Porsche coupe's taillamps. That's where it ends, however.

The 3,746cc twin-turbocharged flat six produces 700 horsepower and over 656 lb-ft of torque, which, according to RUF, enables the CTR3 to run from zero to 62 mph in 3.2 seconds and max out at 235 mph. Shifts come courtesy of a six-speed sequential manual gearbox. The tall shifter is capped with a metal knob and features prominently in the Ruf's leather-lined cabin. 15" 6-piston ceramic-composite brakes fore and aft handle the task of stopping this rocketship. The brakes are tucked behind a set five-spoke wheels sized 19" in front and 20" in back. As much a supercar as the Enzo, Carrera GT, and SLR McLaren, the CTR 3 is priced accordingly at €380,000 plus VAT. That's over $510,000 US dollars at the current exchange rate, and for the buyers who would consider adding one to their collections, it's probably worth every single penny.

And more pictures.

I think it's more of a ground up creation, but to me it looks like a Caymen with a huge ass.

What about in the rain? :dopey:

I think JohnBM01 hit the nail on the head. Take Porsche's best car and give it the ultimate tuner treatment. I'd be afraid to drive one very fast at all without AWD, though I still wouldn't say no. :)👍

Forget the red part...I just read the post above with the new info.
