What could I do to my car to prevent rust in certain areas i.e. wheel arch rust is a common problem with Almera's. Ive checked mine out and I don't see any rust so what should I do to prevent it and if I find rust, what should I do to get rid of it so It doesn't come back.

I had a go in a different area last year by sanding the area down until almost all the surface rust was gone, spraying the area with Primer paint, using body filler, spraying primer again and then finished it off with colour and lacquer but I can see bubbles developing now so that didnt work too well:indiff:

Good preventative is keep your car clean, I don't just mean nice shiny panels, I mean in the areas where water/moisture can sit. When I wash my car I always spray pressured water though all the channels between panels that water flows though, making sure they do not get blocked. Tree leaves are deadly for this, always clear them.

Wheel arches often have a folded lip under there and often plastic panels pushed in those lips (great place for moisture) clear them out and if you wish spray some fish oil (or similar) in there from time to time to help prevent rust from occurring.
I notice in my mums N15 Pulsar (much like your car) a lot of leaves and debris sits in the bottom of the front fenders/wings by the door, you see them from the drivers seat as you open the door, always clear the debris.

As for fixing rust spots, you should remove all rust (as you did) and use a special anti rust primer, normal primers are not designed to cope with rust, then later before you paint to can add regular primer to paint over. If the rust has put holes in the panels then they should be welded up and not filled. Body filler should just be used thin to get the correct shape back. If all the rust has been removed (didn't miss any trace) it shouldn't come back unless there is some other fault causing moisture to sit.

Great, thanks a lot man.

Yea when Im cleaning the car I stick the vacuum down that bit to get all the leaves and dirt out. It surprises me how much crap gets there.

Heres where It was rusting last year, Maybe you should give your mums Pulsar a look too.

How about rust in the panels on each side of a HQ, between the windscreen and bonnet? The non removable ones? Also in the gutter just before the D pillar? (it's a wagon) Oh, and in the very top right hand corner of the otherwise beautiful nose cone?
