RWD RALLYING: IT'S NOT BIG, IT'S NOT CLEVER, BUT IT SURE IS FUN!!!

I'm sure I'm not alone here (hi Scaff, Ving), but I really love doing the rally circuits with RWD cars. Personally I prefer it if they have some kind of rallying history, so you're usually talking '85 at the latest.

Fave: Lancia Stratos: so well balanced
Biggest challenge: Renault 5 Maxi Turbo :scared:
Biggest grin: Renault Alpine A110 with 290-odd bhp/Dodge Charger R/T Hemi

Best tracks for RWD: Grand Canyon & Tahiti Maze

Feel free to say what you want about GT4's unwanted Uncle....

Quite agree that the 5 Maxi Turbo is one of the biggest challenges (but a bloody great car), you have to give the 240Z a go, its great fun.

hmmm :indiff: , I never tried RWD yet, But I'm dying to win the Maxi Turbo to give it a whirl... On Colin McRae Rally 04 it's a damn hard beast to control, Can't wait to hook it up on GT4!!!

elctrk!
i do more rallying with rwd than 4wd

Which car's a winner against the 4wd's?

I the beat the (Normal) Integrale with the Charger, but only because the Charger's so huge sideways he can't find a way past! (Cue Muttley-style s******ing)

OFF-TOPIC... OMFG! The censor thinks that snig-gering is s-******-ing? Wassup with that? Can't I say ****ake mushrooms?

^^^Obviously can't say shi-take either...

I'd like to give this a go, too... started rallying with FF cars, but I can't get them to hook up at all in the dirt... no big surprise, I guess, as they barely hook up on the tarmac in GT4 to begin with...

Use a bold tag and a close bold tag in between two of the letters:

Sniggering
Shitake
Shitzu (a breed of small dog)

No, that doesn't work...clever filter...

Let's try accents:

Sniggéring
Shítake

I am trying it out with a Honda S2000. HAHA. convertible rally racing

Check out da bling car man. Innit :) Somehow doesn't fit in well with your typical rally attire! Love it :)

By the way, I'm sorry if my language caused offence earlier.... I don't know how it slipped out.

For RWD rally, I love the Datsun 510 Rally in the game and any old scool smallish cars for that matter. I wish PD put in a MK I Escort like a Mexico or RS2000, or a Lotus Cortina? They would be nice! 👍

Definitely! Have you tuned that 510 or left it alone? Haven't touched mine yet.

One thing that I have done (which started this whole thread off really) is throw a bunch of RWD cars (preferably with rallying in the blood) around Tahiti Maze and Grand Canyon, saving the ghost each time and racing against myself.

I'd start with what I thought would be the slowest and work up. Slowest was the '70 Skyline coupe (just too cumbersome for rallying, but I thought it was worth a shot), Then the '69 Bluebird, the '74 Lancer GSR Rally. I can't remember the exact order of the rest of them (slack I know, but I'm too lazy to be a proper geek, I just like the image...), but they included Alpine A110, Dodge Charger R/T Hemi, Mitsubishi Lancer 1800 EX Turbo '83, the Renault 5 Turbos (of course), both Stratos's, both Nissan 240 RSs ('85), a RWD Corolla Levin, and the BMW 2002 turbo (love 'im). The Stratos Rally was definitely the quickest, and the standard one punched way above its 200 bhp, embarrassing the Maxi turbo and the Rally 240 RS (I was sooo pleased when I won that car :) )

I read a story about someone who used to drive a Falcon GTHO Phase III (all time classic aussie muscle car) in off road rallies - he said it was like sitting in your armchair and driving the house around - I will have to see if I can an american car with similar specs and give that a go - should be fun (or not).

General specifications
Years of production: 1970 - 1971
Numbers built: 1857
Weight: 1527 kilo / 3366.5 lbs

Drivetrain
Engine: 90º V 8
Engine Location: Front , longitudinally mounted
Displacement: 5.751 liter / 350.9 cu in
Valvetrain: 2 valves / cylinder, OHV
Fuel feed: Holley 780 CFM Carburetor
Aspiration; Naturally Aspirated
Gearbox; 4 speed Manual
Drive: Rear wheel drive

Performance figures
Power: 380 bhp / 283 KW @ 5400 rpm
Torque: 513 Nm / 378 ft lbs @ 3400 rpm
BHP/Liter: 66 bhp / liter
Power to weight ratio: 0.25 bhp / kg
Top Speed: 229 km/h / 142 mph
0-60 mph Acceleration: 6.4 s

EDIT: Hmmm... nothing comparable in GT4 - closest I can find for power and weight is a Plymouth Cuda 440 Six Pack - pity it is a hardtop with what I assume must be a big block V8.

Go for the FPV Ford Falcon GT for the modern incarnation.
Also Peter Brock used a Holden Commodore (1980's model) in several around Australia Rallies. The Lotus Carlton would be a good substitute for the Holden Commodores from the 80's.

lol @ eddie!
yeah its fun stuff alright. I like using small low powered ones tho. I have a suped up izuzu that i like to throw around, old alfas are great too :)
sweeeet!

the maze is a good track but i like the short versoin of the yosemite track better (reverse). 1-2-3 DROP OFF! :)

I think the Ford FPV GT would be a good choice, linear power, way too much weight... :)

Am trying the Alpina later.

I have two of the 510 rally cars. I purchased all mods and tires for them but I set up one with full mods and big turbo with a lowered road set up. The other is a mild NA tune dirt car. I did much the same with two 74 lancers (rally type), this is a fun car! 👍

I have not played with the Rally 240 RS yet but look forward to tuning them. I have two of them as well, for that matter I have two of most race cars and all rally cars. The reason for having two of each rally car is I set one up for road and the other for dirt. This way I don't mess with settings when I switch tracks. Smart ea? :)

The Stratos: A Ferrari in the game! What a fun car, one of the best for tight twisty road tracks and not bad on the dirt when you relearn how to drive it! But this is a MR not a RWD! I love the AE86 but miss the body kits from GT I and II. :(

Edit: One thing to note with RWD cars on dirt and snow. The red necks around Canada that drive RWD pickup's during the winter, put hay bales in the back for more traction. Add some balast to your cars and notice the difference.

Right! Just got back from a long day at the (mobile) office. 700 miles might not sound like much to the Aussies and the yanks, but in this country it's a painful slog (imagine a 14 hr Midget race where every other midget driver is fast asleep and has noo idea what most of his controls are for. Then imagine a bug appearing at random intervals that won't just take away your money, but will also wipe all your licenses from the memory and probably confiscate your PS2 at the same time. :banghead: A friend of mine got a £250 fine last week. For what? 34mph in a 30 limit!!! 'Nuff Sed. I am planning my revenge, trying, at their coffee mornings, to persuade the local arab militia to blow up speed cameras instead of people....

And so to business!

Slotcarrod, sorry to be picky but I'm talking rear wheel drive here, not just FR. I don't mind FWD to be honest, if anyone can find a way of stopping the darn things from understeering into oblivion on the loose.

Thanks for those tuning tips. I like the '69 bluebird, even untuned, as it has a real even balance. I investigated the LSDs yesterday, but I'll come back to that.

Ving, glad you're enjoying yourself, man, haven't tried the Isuzu, looks just the job. Tsk, more work!!!

Brock, I confess, I'm the world's worst geek! I have about 80 photos, but I'm too dumb to figure out how to get them from the PS2 in my living room to the PC in my bedroom. I've been poring over those threads since I found this site, but I've never been very PC and simply don't speak the language :guilty: . I had to ask my sister what LMFAO meant the other day. This is bugging me cos I wd love to get my photos online. But I hate computers, which is why I've been playing GT for 7 years and found this site last week! Basically I'm a petrolhead. That's it.

LSDs

Scaff (if you're watching). Thanks for the 240Z tip, been testing with it last night. Nice balance, must be heavy though, cos even with a stage 2 not too quick.

However I suffered a lot from wheelspin, and decided to test the LSDs. Good move, cos they made a noticeable difference (5secs round Tahiti in stage 2 tune)

Of the base ones, the one way is all you need, but if you have a car that is tricky under braking (the twitchy little Renault 5 Turbos for example), try the 1.5 way. I haven't had a chance to check out the all singing all dancing one yet (I had to get up at 5 this morning), but I have a sneaking suspicion it won't make much of an improvement. And if you have to measure it, it ain't worth having.

Cheers guys, take it sideways!

Back when I posted at the official Star Wars forums, "muffin" was censored.

P.S. How do you people like the CTR Yellow Bird on dirt? (can it go on dirt? I forget)

Haven't tried the CTR, but the BTR was a natural. I chose it partly cos it was older (Porsche rallied the early 911s) and partly because it has LESS power, and is therefore less likely to sit there at 34mph in 3rd @ 7000rpm! :irked: According to my free run leaderboard, it actually beat the rally Stratos at Grand Canyon, which I don't remember. It's possible I beat the BTR with a time I didn't save.

I've decided to see how many special condition races I can win with RWD.

So far so good, Tahiti Easy is, well, easy. I started off with the full house Rally Nissan 240RS (c.350bhp), which was overkill really, so then I did the return leg in a Nissan Silvia 240RS (250bhp), the white one. Even that was straightforward, so I tried the Lancer 1600 GSR Rally, but that was nowhere.

Then I went on to the R5 Turbo (206bhp), (red ones are faster), and that won (best lap 2'33), and it would have won more easily if I hadn't believed I had supernatural powers and drove into a brick wall... :ouch:

Then I checked out the TVR V8 S for the return leg, and it won too (2'41"), so plenty of choice there. TVR had a good torquey engine (surprise, surprise) but the chassis was a bit cumbersome, and it clearly wasn't a rally natural.

Then I went to the Grand Canyon. Different story there. I quickly realised I was going to have to bring out the big guns for this tricky stage, and went for the regular Stratos. You've got to get past early on there or you've got no hope, but if you charge up his left hand side there's a good gap which puts you on a neat line for the right hander (best lap 2'44). Only engine mod was a 'zorst, but it also had gearbox, clutch and flywheel. 👍

Stuck with the Stratos for the return leg, and thankfully was up against a '74 Lancer, which was nice. But he kept catching back up again. Must get better in that direction, don't do it very often (best lap 2'51). :dunce:

Finally I did the Swiss Alps track, first in the Toot Sweet (2002 Turbo), then, for the return leg, in the Dodge Charger R/T Hemi (Bullitt colours). Not that difficult.

I doubt if I'll get very far on the ice tracks or at the hard level, but I've got high hopes on the 'Normal' level. In the past I've just gone for the easy option in the heat of competition, and gone for 4WD, especially at Grand Canyon.

Feel free to join in. T'ra.
