With revised styling and prices being slashed, Jaguar's S-Type saloon is about to be given a fitting send-off

Auto Express broke the news of its replacement, the XF, in Issue 938 - but there's still more than a year before the all-new model goes on sale. In the meantime, the S-Type range has been facelifted as top brass bid to keep it up to speed with the competition.

Major changes come at the front end. In an effort to shake off the Jag's dowdy image, all variants feature the sporty R model's bumper and mesh grille. Larger alloy wheels have also been added to the line-up, with base variants now getting 17-inch rims.

Bizarrely, the only alteration to the colour range is the removal of the fam*ous Jaguar Racing Green, which has been replaced by Emerald Fire.

Inside, the S-Type's interior has been modernised, while standard equipment levels are improved. All models come with extra kit, including multifunction leather seats on SE-spec cars.

As for price reductions, the biggest saving comes on the top-of-the-range S-Type R. It costs £45,000, which is a drop of £5,040. Order books are open now, and the simplified line-up comprises Spirit, XS, SE and R specifications, as the Classic variant has been deleted. Entry-level models are fitted as standard with a six-speed automatic transmission, and also feature seats and a steering wheel trimmed in leather.

The S-Type's replacement, the forthcoming XF, is set to be revealed in concept form at a major motor show next year. It's due to appear on dealer forecourts here in early 2008.

I'd prefer an S-Type R over an RS4, not as quick but they arn't in the same class of car, the S-Type is a bigger car inside and out and imo far, far better looking. And it's fast enough. There's a couple of S-Type R owners in my area, I've seen quite a few actually.

And I've been in one today. I had my camera with me and ought to have taken a short video of it accelerating because... daaaaa-yum.

True :D

We were just pootling along a backroad, it straightened out and dad switched into sport mode and overtook. A cathedral shouldn't accelerate like that.
