Saints Row 2 Officially Canonized
THQ confirms thugged-out sequel will arrive on 360, PS3 in '08 with online campaign co-op.

When THQ CFO Edward Zinser projected the company's first-quarter financials in May, he stated that revenues would be down, and the PlayStation 3 port of the 2006 Xbox 360 hit Saints Row had been canceled. In lieu of a PS3 version of the original, THQ CEO Brian Farrell noted that Saints Row creator Volition had shifted its full focus to developing the game's sequel for the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3, to release simultaneously next year.

Today, THQ officially confirmed that Saints Row 2--now its official title--would be coming to the PS3 and Xbox 360 in 2008. The publisher also revealed some details on how the protégé will attempt to differentiate itself from its inspiration, the Grand Theft Auto series. The distinction might be necessary, given that Grand Theft Auto IV's delay to Spring 2008 might pit it against Saints Row 2.

Saints Row 2 will return to an expanded version of Stilwater, the crime-plagued metropolis that was the original's locale. However, Volition lead producer Greg Donovan said the game will have a heavier tone than its predecessor. "Saints Row 2 has a much darker and more sinister story that leads your character down a path of betrayal, revenge, and redemption against the city that has left him for dead, although we've blended that with the same light-hearted humor from the original," he promised.

Saints Row 2 will also offer a number of new features. Previously mission-based, online two-player co-op will now be extended to the full campaign mode, which will let two virtual gangsters play through the entire story together. SR2 will also include a somewhat mysterious "open-world competitive multiplayer mode never before seen in the genre." And as is standard for a sequel, Volition has expanded on many features of the original, including new character-customization options and added vehicles, such as motorcycles, boats, helicopters, and planes.

THQ also launched the game's official Web site today. Saints Row 2 has not yet been rated or priced.

Saints Row 2 is Coming, EGM Has Full Details
Sequel headed for 360, PS3 in 2008.

They say competition fuels development, and with Grand Theft Auto IV coming around the bend, we need more gritty open-world gangland action games. Surely that was the motivation today behind THQ's announcement that Saints Row would be seeing a sequel, appropriately titled Saints Row 2, in the coming year. And you can find plenty more about Saints Row 2 in the November 2007 issue of EGM as part of the magazine's new cover story.

EGM's cover story isn't your typical write-up, either, using Saints Row 2 as a launching pad to discuss the inherent problems of coming off as a "clone" of an already popular game. In this case, GTA. "The GTA franchise has obviously had a very big impact on open-world games," says Saints Row 2 Designer James Tsai. "We have lots of respect for them. I've owned the games, and I've learned a lot from them. We know they're a beloved franchise, but we think we have a lot to offer, too."

Saints Row 2 will take place in the same city, but as you'd expect, with far more detail than the last go round. Additionally, the popular multiplayer features are receiving an overhaul -- online co-op and a multiplayer-specific version of the city of Stilwater, anyone? For plenty more, check out the new EGM!

I've never played Saints Row. Could be because I have always had a station.

But truly, I look at the game cars i saints row and they look cheesy. Hope Saints Row 2 is better. GTA IV has lovely car graphic. I think there outstanding. So when Saints Row 2 is released, I really hope to be impressed.

I always thought of Saints Row as the 'Gangsta' brother of GTA, like more cheesy..

I only tried it once on the 360 demo and it was horrid...

In absolute all honesty I actually like Saints Row and was more of a success in my eyes than GTA IV is. Yes, there isn't near as good content, some graphical glitches, the story isn't as long or serious and the cars don't go that fast/handle horribly but the overall concept of it being more "silly" is what made it for me. The specific silly modes like the (can't remember the exact name) "accident insurance claims" where you tyr to injure yourself as much as possible to increase the pay the insurance will pay out on you. Best way to do it was to get run over by a truck and get dragged along. The graphics are cleaner too, and the physics are just as good as GTA IV.

I can only hope for better things with SR2!

I liked the first Saints Row. It got a lot of things right such as aiming, character customisation, car customisation. It was great fun being driven around the city by a gang member whilst you used an RPG to blow up everything in sight. And the explosions were good too.
It's not a game to take seriously and it doesn't have the edge or gravitas of GTAIV. The whole gang thing in Saints Row is fairly tedious. However GTAIV disappointed in that once you beat the game there's nothing to do. SRII does look like there's a lot of content. And the online co-op is a great addition.
I think it's trying to distance itself from GTA and it should be viewed as another sandpit game that you can have lots of fun with.

I wonder how this will fair being on the PS3 for the first time. I hope its not like some shoddy 360 port seeing as the first was exclusive. If they can get the PS version right they really could have a winner on their hands because they will have secured a new fan base.

Are there going to be cars of like identity? What im asking is. Are the cars in the game realistic models? or are they cars made out of boston baked bean boxes with wheels on them.
