And now Saleen and his crew at Saleen Automotive have announced plans for the development of an electric car.

Before you start imagining an electrified Saleen aimed at hybrid hypercars like the Ferrari LaFerrari, McLaren P1 and Porsche 918 Spyder, recall that Saleen previously stated that its planned electric car was aimed at commercial and consumer markets.

No further details on Saleen’s electric car plans have been revealed, though the company plans to give an update early next year by revealing a scale model.

"We recognize that electric cars are a trend, not a fad and expect this vehicle category to continue to increase as an automotive option for consumers," Steve Saleen said in a statement. "We intend to enter this market with an offering that is truly innovative and offers the styling and craftsmanship associated with the Saleen Automotive brand."

I'm interested to see if they will make their own car or work off an existing car like the Focus.

Saleen's Electric Car Will Be A Tuned Tesla Model S

We assumed it would be based on a Ford Focus Electric. Instead, it's going to be based off of a Tesla Model S. It's good to be wrong.

Saleen announced today it would be developing a sports car based on the Model S.

"I fully intend to produce one of the most compelling Teslas to ever hit the roadway," CEO Steve Saleen said in the release.

Well, OK.

No details like performance or renderings to give us an idea of what it would look like were released, but the company said it was working on that. Can't wait to see how this will turn out.

Renders of the Saleen-Tesla Model S, it will be released by this summer.
The design renderings of the first ever-electric cartuned by Saleen were revealed over the weekend in Los Angeles, California, during a media event. As you can see, Saleen envisions a more aggressive-looking package for the Tesla Model S, including redesigned bumpers, lower sills, carbon fiber rear diffuser and decklid trim, a massive wing and Saleen signature wheels.

The interior “provides an elevated cabin environment consistent with current Saleen production models,” according to Saleen. The rendering reveals sportier leather seats with red stitching and Alcantara inserts, a material that appears to be found on the lower side of the dashboard as well.

Performance-wise, Saleen only mentions the EV will be fitted with carbon ceramic brakes. However, here’s what company founder Steve Saleen had to say about the tuned Tesla: “As pleased as I am by the aesthetics seen in these renderings, perhaps the true Saleen mark will be best exhibited by the mechanical enhancements that will only be seen as the live vehicle hits the streets this summer.”

"I’m exceedingly proud of the work that my design team has done in creating these first images of what I expect to be an exceptional automobile," stated Steve Saleen, CEO, Saleen Automotive. "We stand on the shoulders of greatness for sure, as we modify the truly inspired design of the Tesla Model S, yet I believe firmly that these images convey my expectation for a vehicle that expands on that heritage and creates something remarkable."

Saleen Automotive expects the first Saleen Tesla Model S to be completed during the Summer of 2014.

"And as pleased as I am by the aesthetics seen in these renderings, perhaps the true Saleen mark will be best exhibited by the mechanical enhancements that will only be seen as the live vehicle hits the streets this summer," added Saleen.

I love it. Its the 1st Saleen since the Saleen heritage S302-PJ back in '07 that I have liked.

Looks cool, but I have to ask, who would buy this?

I think that most people who know what Saleen is are the type that aren't super interested in owning an electric four door. I also don't think people who want a Model S will find the sporty body kit, red stitching, and carbon fiber to be a turn on.

I guess the color is a bit of a hint. Orange County Orange to match the skin color of the target buyer group.

The front looks like a Panamera with lids on the headlights. It looks too bloated and round compared to Saleens other designs.

I absolutely hate the front. I like the rear and side, but... the front.

So I'm going to guess this will be a basic Model S, with a front bumper/spoiler/diffuser, painted orange, and for a low, low additional price of $7500?

Looks awesome but I don't see any boost in power from the current, just parts off a shelf that Tesla could have done without Saleen. Also I recall not that long ago getting in an argument about the S model being a sport sedan and being told it wasn't...yet someone at Tesla had the wise idea to join Saleen who are known for racing so I'd say they seem to see it my way.

Looks kinda like a NASCAR. Looks better than a lot of major brands hideous designs, but not sure if I would want this or not.

Dallas would buy this car.

It's actually not half bad looking but, if it's just a visual upgrade then I can't see much point to it.

If there's a notable power bump of like 20 to 40Hp however then it could justify it's point. 💡

Corvette-Panamera front thing is nice, but i don't think they need a lip wing unless it's going past 150.

Just a thought: The original Tesla Model S had rear child boot seats. I wonder..

I can imagine the kids wondering why the cars they see have flickering red and blue lights on their roof.

My main question. What will be the performance benefits? It has to be better than the Model S performance wise. Will the performance be great enough to warrant a trade off with efficiency? This is no simple "hook a ECU up, decipher the hex code" like with a typical EFI engine. They really have to go through a great ordeal of reverse engineering on a complex car (unless Tesla is somewhat involved).

Please. Make the UI Saleen themed.

The Tesla Model S is my least favorite car on sale currently. And Saleen is my favorite independent tuner...

Despite the image, a lot of Tesla buyers apparently aren't even that fussed about the "green" side of the car - they're buying them in lieu of Porsche Panameras and the like because of the performance. I imagine there are a few buyers out there for stuff like this Saleen - someone who might previously have bought an AMG Merc or a Techart-tuned Panamera but just like the Model S instead.

How can your hate the Model S?

(yes, two months later, wasn't quoted or tagged) It's overrated. I can't stand overrated cars. I dislike it because it's electric, which is stupid in this day and age when we still have oil. I hate it because it gets so much attention.

I'll consider liking Tesla when they build a sedan that can top the M5. Or the IS F. Or the Panamera.
For the same reasons people smashed looms back in the 1800's.

Me no want technawlogee. Me want familiar forever.

Yep. Gasoline beats electricity, and I do want it forever.
