Even with GTA4 out, it seems there still seems to be a fair amount of interest in SA, so hopefully this works - besides, how much fun could a rally in a city possibly be anyway?

The rally will be split up into stages and ran in a similar fashion to the "online" racing series ran for Gran Turismo 4. I'll give the starting point and the first checkpoint, then we see who can get there the fastest. Then, once everyone's submitted their times, the next checkpoint is announced, we hop back in our cars, and we're off. A points system could be used to decide who got the overall lowest time.

Rules I would like to incorporate (Hopefully you're all honest. This is only a video game after all, there's no money at stake):
  • Stick to the roads (paved and dirt) and alleyways.
  • The radar is turned completely off, but you're allowed to reference the pause menu map for directions, like a real road map one would have in their car. Again, for the sake of realism; sorry, but I don't think GPS was around in 1992. Either that, or we turn the mini map to "blips only" mode and you're not allowed any kind of map, just your marked destination and 'North' to guide you.
  • No Pay-N-Spray visits during a stage. There will probably be a week-long period to submit each checkpoint's time, and you can save your car in a garage for repairs between times until the next one is announced.
  • If you attract the attention of cops, we call it a ticket, resulting in you getting no points for that stage (this is where "honesty" is stressed the most).
  • Land vehicles only, and TransFender/Loco Low Co/Wheel Arch Angels mods are allowed.
  • No cheats or game mods of any kind.

Well, what do you think? Suggestions are definitely welcome.

How would stage times be measured - using the game clock or an actual stop-watch?

One recommendation: split the rally into classes.
Class A could be sports cars (Infernus/Turismo/Banshee/ZR350/street racers etc)
Class B could be mid-range cars (Premier/Blade/Slamvan/Blista etc)
Class C could be the slowest cars (Perennial/Walton/Towtruck etc)
Class D could be road bikes (BF400/PCJ600/FCR900/NRG500)
Class E could be SUVs/4x4s (Rancher/Huntley)
Class F could be "specials" (Bandito/BF Injection)
Class G could be anything else (Tanker/Coach/Rhino  etc)

(I'll refer to the car performance list at GTAForums later and work out a proper list, if you think it's a good idea)

You pick a class to race in and have to use a car (or bike) from that class; that way people are encouraged to pick crappy stuff like Perennials, Waltons etc as opposed to simply going for the Infernus (which is the quickest car in a straight line) ;)

I'm definitely interested. 👍

You'd never get enough entries to fill those classes and make it competitive.

This sort of thing has been tried before and gotten through a few rounds but good luck with it 👍

The in-game clock would be easier to measure time. If enough people participated in some of the classes, it sounds like a good idea.

EDIT - I could run in atleast two classes. I'm interested in A and either E or F (whichever the Sand King falls into).

Wow, I like this idea! Would this workout for online play? I mean someone sets a couse and its a free for all to get there or do a rally stage where people have staggered starts and someone times it at the finish line... my $0.02

Well, I do these for fun all the time, but I've never mapped out the checkpoints. If anyone else wants to race, here's the map. There doesn't seem to be much interest, so there's no need to be too formal about it. Still, try to stick to the beaten path. Just post the times it took you to get to each checkpoint, and the vehicle(s) you used. Have fun!

Start: Verdant Bluffs observatory parking lot
Checkpoint 1: Peak of Mt. Chiliad
Checkpoint 2: Burger Shot in Juniper Hollow, SF
Checkpoint 3: West parking lot of Sherman Dam
Checkpoint 4: Camel's Toe in LV (in front of the enterable door)
Finish: Garages of Mad Dogg's mansion

Lets start by meeting up in the parking lot of the Verdant Bluffs observatory. Your first objective is to reach the summit at Mt. Chiliad. The trip is roughly five or six hours, depending on your vehicle of choice. Mind the cliffs when you reach the mountain; a fall can prove to be a little... fatal.

Take in the view of the countryside and distant San Fierro before heading to Juniper Hollow. We'll meet up again at the local Burger Shot for some lunch before continuing on.

This next stint, to the scenic Sherman Dam, is a couple hours shorter than the last two, but we'll stop for a break in the parking lot on the west side.

Our final checkpoint is The Camel's Toe near the south end of the Las Venturas strip. Depending on how late everyone gets there, we may just call it a night before racing to the finish line. I've reserved a few suites just in case. By the way, any room service comes out of your pocket. I'm not feeling that charitable.

We'll end the rally at Mad Dogg's mansion. You can thank his manager, Carl Johnson, for getting his record company to sponsor the event and throw us a little party after spending so much time driving. Please park around back by the garages and join the festivities by the pool.
