As rumoured over the past couple of weeks, Takuma Sato will test with Scuderia Toro Rosso with a view to joining the team as replacement for Sebastian Vettel next season.

The Formula One refugee, sidelined following the collapse of the Super Aguri team after the Spanish Grand Prix in May, has made no secret of his desire to return to the top flight, and was first linked with a possible STR outing at the Hungarian Grand Prix last month. His manager, Andrew Gilbert-Scott, has admitted that they are talking to several teams with regard to a possible return in 2009, but Toro Rosso is the first to show tangible interest, having confirmed the Japanese ace alongside Red Bull development scheme regular Sebastien Buemi for the Jerez test later this month.

"I am delighted to be given this opportunity to get back behind the wheel of a Formula One car after my season was cut short," Sato commented, "It will be especially interesting working with a team that has made so much progress over the course of the year."

The Toro Rosso team admits that, having resigned itself to the loss of Sebastian Vettel to Red Bull Racing next season, it is time to focus on finding an adequate replacement, especially as current team-mate Sebastien Bourdais continues to find his feet in F1. Team boss Gerhard Berger said at the weekend that Bourdais has six races left in which to convince him that he is worthy of a second season at Faenza, and pointed out that Red Bull could still have the final say in the shape of his line-up in 2009.

Sato and Buemi will each get a day behind the wheel of the current STR3 at the Jerez test, although it is expected that the Swiss youngster will have more time to make use of the outing, having already been made familiar with the car - or, at least, the similar RB4 run by Red Bull Racing, for which he is official test driver. Sato, meanwhile, will bring the wisdom gleaned from his 91-race grand prix career - in which he has raced for Jordan, BAR, Honda and Super Aguri - knowing that Berger has said that he would like to pair youth and experience in his 2009 squad.

"The time has come to try and find a suitable replacement for Vettel," team principal Franz Tost confirmed, "The Jerez test, the last one of the season, will give us an opportunity to evaluate Buemi and Sato at the same time, as they are both possible candidates for a 2009 seat.

"Buemi is an obvious candidate, because not only is he already part of the Red Bull family, but he is currently performing well in the GP2 series. As for Sato, he has proved worthy of a place in Formula One and would be a good fit with the Red Bull spirit, while his recent F1 experience would be undoubtedly valuable to our team."

Toro Rosso has confirmed that Buemi will test on Wednesday 17 September, with Sato taking over 24 hours later.

Driving an F1 car in a test does not equal an F1 return.

A link from the said driver's own web site does not constitute a reliable source.

Buemi's test day

"The Swiss driver made no mistakes and provided good feedback throughout the day, even establishing the third-fastest time right behind the team's maiden Grand Prix winner, Sebastian vettel, who was getting to know the people at the Red Bull team ahead of his move there next year."

The Kingston, Jamaica redbull event Buemi drove in this year was pretty cool. Even though I'm more of a sato fan, I wish him the best of luck.

Sato is a good driver, even with the bad circumstances and a sub par car he made the best of it. Nakajima or Yamamoto can't touch Sato in regards of driving talent, so all in all whether testing or a possible race seat, Toro Rosso have a good driver in Sato.

Welcome back Taku. :)

Just to post this in the right thread.....

Point in case about Red Bull having nothing wrong with them and it being down to drivers:

Either I'm really missing something here or Sato got his bottom kicked by Buemi quite royally when we're comparing the guys to Vettel on both days...

It could be because Vettel was actually driving for the main Red Bull squad instead of Toro Rosso during the Jerez test. Admittedly the Toro has been the car to have over the last couple of events compared to the RBR, but also Buemi and Sato won't be as up to speed as Vettel on current F1 spec, and the RBR may suit Jerez's characteristics more than the STR.

Vettel beating them wasn't my point, it was pretty much to be expected anyway. My point was that on Wednesday there was about 0.3 seconds between Vettel's RBR and Buemi's STR. On Thursday there was about 1.5 seconds between Vettel's RBR and Sato's STR. Seeing that Vettel drove the same car on both days, and the "other guys" drove the same car on both days, the differences should be comparable... and it means that Sato is more than a second per lap slower then Buemi.

Ah ok, my apologies, I misunderstood your original post, even though it was only 2 lines :)

Having looked into it a bit more, it seems on his Toro Rosso day Buemi did 88 laps, whereas Taku only did 49. Plus on Taku's day it rained in the afternoon so apparently he didn't get a good shot at timed runs, his morning work was based on aero. Maybe that explains the disparity?

They were carrying out mixed tests. Some for the next race, some for subsequent races and some work for next years car. Unless someone knows exactly what the lap times represent on each day of tests then there can't be an accurate comparison between the lap times.

Awesome. Keep up the good work.

Takuma Sato again underlined what he could bring to Scuderia Toro Rosso in 2009 by posting the second fastest time on day two of the Barcelona group test.

The Japanese driver, who had been fastest of all on the opening day, appeared on top again on some team's version of the times, but was generally accepted to have been pipped by out-going STR driver Sebastian Vettel after completing his latest outing with the Italian team by logging long runs at the wheel of the STR03.

Sato, who had run for the whole of Monday, also only had half a day to play with as he handed the car over to the team's other 2008 pilot, Sebastien Bourdais, for the afternoon. Despite the Frenchman's greater experience of team and car, however, he could not quite match Sato's 1min 20.017secs effort, which proved to be the best of the Toro Rosso runners, despite the former Jordan, Honda and BAR pilot running at 'race pace'. Bourdais logged a 1min 20.034secs best, with Sebastien Buemi - rumoured to be Sato's main rival for a seat at the team next year - fourth overall on 1min 20.223secs.

"I have really enjoyed the test and it was great to be back in the car," Sato commented, "The last test in September was a little disappointing, because I could do only three hours, as it rained in the afternoon, but this test has been great.

"I have now done my first full day's driving in seven months and completed a total of 200 laps. The car has worked really well and felt great to drive. I enjoyed working with the team and it was very interesting for me to see how the engineers work. It was a great experience and chance for me and I would like to say a big thanks to Red Bull and Mr Mateschitz, as well as to the Scuderia Toro Rosso team."

Bourdais and Buemi will complete Toro Rosso's programme with another full day on Wednesday.

Sato is a great driver though. Just don't give him the number 4!
