In the UK the name "Rabbit" has entirely different connotations - at least for 50% of the population...

oh man, if we dont watch it this thread is sure to become locked.

Here in the US, the Brazilian-built VW Fox ddn't come out until 1987. The last Rabbit was a 1984 model; we switched to the Golf name in 1985.
There was an Audi Fox sold here in the '70s. It was a sister car to the VW Dasher/Passat, and sold as the Audi 80/90 elsewhere.

I'm assuming that VW decided to do the name change to show that they're trying to go back to what the Rabbit/GTI used to mean early on. Small & fun. Sure they've gotten bigger, but the new Mk V is definitely a big step forward from the old Golf/gti. Since VW is making the change in the engineering dept, guess they need to change the ex. Golf now Rabbits image.

VW had said before that it was done to connect the cars of today with the cars of the past. Think Chrysler 300 or Dodge Charger in this situation. They want to be able to draw in the older customers on the Rabbit name, and the younger customers on the value that the Rabbit will come to represent. Also, I think added to the mix is that the Golf is so often called a "chick" car, and the Rabbit will hopefully turn that name around.

We will see...
