This event will be run in a similar format to the last 365 GTS4 event. I will open a lobby under my PSN ID: jjaisli approximately 5~10 minutes before the event starts and will first send race invites to those on my buddy list who have raced in the Old Timer series in the past. If anybody new would like to join, provided there's space in the lobby, you're more than welecome. Just send me a PSN message and I'll send you an invite in return.

Additional Details:

- I encourage everybody who wants to take part to carefully read THIS THREAD and take appropriate steps before the event. I'm really bothered by the fact that there are connectivity issues with this game. And while I feel very badly for those so afflicted, it's also an imposition to the others in the lobby. If for some reason you are consistently kicked out of the lobby, I will try to send a few duplicate invites. But if after a few brief tries you are unable to stay connected to the lobby, I will offer my apologies and start the event.

- I like the 512M. But I'm actually not looking forward to this race because I don't think it's a very good car for 'close' on-line racing in a large lobby. I predict a lot of violent contact during the first few laps of every race. And while I realize it's only a game, I'd like to plead for restraint from everybody to avoid unnecessary contact. The races are 15 laps, more than enough time for the faster drivers to work their way to the front. And just to make it clear (1) please do NOT cut the first chicane at Monza and (2) please do NOT run wide between turns 12 & 13 at Hockenheim.

- Because Eutechnyx has still not patched the ride height bug, I'm asking for everybody to run DEFAULT setup ONLY for this event.

- I encourage the use of headsets, although to be realistic, we know headsets don't work very well when more than 4-5 people are using them at the same time. And if we really have a large lobby, I would like to ask everybody to turn off their headsets completely once the race gets started as it will save bandwidth. Once back in the lobby, feel free to use the mics again.

- I will invite everybody in the lobby to a text chat and will make important announcements in written form so everybody receives clear instructions.

- Between each event there will be a 5 minute break, longer if needed or requested. But I ask everybody to please stay in the lobby.

i might enter this one. This car's brakes are very very strong.

Very true. But in my opinion, that's part of what makes it so bloody dangerous. As much as I enjoy driving this car, and it is a lot of fun, I don't think it makes a very good car for these type of events. Look at Biggles, the prospect scares him so much he just booked a trip to the Caribbean to try and escape. Speaking of which...

I'll be in St. Lucia...

Irie mon ...

And? You take the PS3 & G25 with you everywhere else...

So you prefer I change it to Infineon then? 20 laps? In the rain? And raise it to max of 3 penalities? :)

No, no, no ... leave it that way, I just hope I can practise the track before so at least I know where to brake

I was searching 512M videos and found this amazing footage of a classic event at Monza, with all sorts of cars. Towards the end of the video you see the first chicane of Monza being stormed by what I think was the first lap of a "2006 Ferrari Challenge World Final" race.

After admiring many classics, check those last few seconds of the video.

I think you will find there: myself, Biggles, arvore, Firedshot, AlanG, Jeff, DrStoner, Bullie, new_soul, the "Ghost" crew (Dice and Yelo) , Chilled, Turner, drivatar, RuiGT, mhm66, turnupdaheat, Sarrinen, Eddietrout, Hairy Dave ... in short ... all the gang.

And we were behaving exactly as we do in the game, although I noticed the bumps were somewhat less violent

Well, ahh......let me say this:

- The Ferrari Challenge series features gentlemen racers. Excuse me, filthy rich, gentlemen racers. The only thing they have in common with us is that they aren't professionals.

- I counted 45 cars in this field plus the two chase cars. If we can't manage ourselves with 12~16, I'm certainly not going to blame a whole fleet of them for trying to squeeze in there.

- That said, there was probably less bumping that what we normally experience amongst ourselves on the first lap.

- Going 3 wide into that Chicane is just trouble.

- I don't feel SO bad anymore.

BEAUTIFUL!!!!👍 I guess SCC can really reproduce real life racing afterall...

hi i did paint colored zones on the tracks, based on my own experience racing on theas tracks!

Basicly green is a safe place to overtake, in the orange zone overtaking can be dificult, but shold be no problem for experienced drivers!
The red zone is where overtaking shold not take place, as ther is a high risc of coliding with the other car, the best is to come as close as posibel without the risc of runing in to the car ahead and take the chance out of the slipstreame in a safer zone!

Supercar Challenge - Old Timer Event - 1971 Ferrari 512M - Sunday, January 31th, 2010 - Race Results

Once again, a big thanks to all those who took part in the 512M event. I'm sorry for those who had problems getting kicked out of the lobby or the PSN network. I was worried before this event even started as in the 30 minutes leading up to the race, I was disconnected from the PSN twice. I think it was a general case of network trouble. Great timing.

My review below will be short and for now, down to results. I hope to add more in the next few days but I'm a bit pressed for time at the moment and am unable to do a full reivew. But I will say this. I wasn't looking forward to this car as I didn't think it was a very good car for on-line racing. I was wrong. Aside from some rather lamentable accidents at the start of both Silverstone South and Monza, the races were generally very clean and produced some of the most exciting and down right nail biting racing this series has ever produced. I'm actually very excited to see some of my videos. Thanks to all the rest of you who ALSO took video. :)

Just a few additional comments. The points are a bit scattered this race with several people unfortunately being kicked out of the races. Alan himself voluntarily exited out of the Silverstone race after he realized his car still carried over setup changes.

Just a quick review also. Had no time to practise for this event and I'm not sure I should've entered it, my driving was too erratic and I had a lot of trouble to find/remind myself of good braking markers. Luckily this car's brakes are very powerful so my problem was more about braking too early than about going off-road :dopey:

1 - Hockenheim - Got 6th in quali and kept at it for about 4 laps. Then I got mingled in a battle between new_soul and jjaisli and - I think by the start of the 5th lap - I decided to park the car at the beggining of the start/finish straight to let them all go and do their races without me and my erratic driving. Re-entered the race in the penultimate position, still managed to overtake a few cars and finished 7th.

2 - Silvertsone South - With almost zero practise on this track things didn't look good. Towards the end of the race I improved and was pulling a few 1.06 laps. Even got a 1.05 in the last lap. Avoided being lapped, that was my consolation prize in this one.

3 - Monza - Again, I was clearly braking too early. Anyway, it was a good race, I inherited 4th position very early because of a few collective offs from many other guys (that I avoided entirely, with some luck). Henrik was 3rd and got away quite easily. And I had a lonely race in 4th until a misundertanding with steve/sheffield made me crash. My lead over 5th (jjaisli) suddenly shrunk from about 12 seconds to 5. And Jeff hunted me down until he eventually got me. And the best part of my racing night begun, with a battle that lasted for a few laps, almost to the end of the race. I am very curious to see Jeff's video to understand what happened to him in the last lap. From my POV, he went wide in the 2nd chicane and probably got a penalty, because suddenly I had a 5 secs lead again.

Again, thanks Jeff for organizing this event, I had great fun racing it! :) 👍

👍 Probably one of the best battles I had in a long time. It would be my Monza 3 video. I just watched it and it was really nail biting stuff. I think I'll post this one before parts I & II of Monza because it's only 4-5 laps and really worth watching. You're right about me getting the penalty. I simply left my braking too late but I knew if I didn't, you'd have the better line. And then I was desperate to stay with you and went off the road again and it allowed Turner to catch me. Truner and I would eventually finish neck and neck, with he just edging me out.

BTW, a few additional comments:

- There's about 2-3 minutes worth of faded picture in my Monza II video. But I didn't edit it out because I didn't want the time line to be ruined. I really need a new camera.

- At the start of Silverstone I realized as I sat down that the sun was shining in from a window on the far side of the room, directly at the TV screen. I could barely see but the race had started and there was nothing I could do. As a result, the video is particularly bad, but in this case it was actually CLOSE to what it really looked like when I was driving. It's ironic that this would end up being my best finish.

- Around lap 3-5 of Monza is where I had that coming together with Arvore in the 2nd chicane. You can see I back off early because of the draft but there is a strange bit of lag there that looks odd in the video and seemed just as odd when it happened.

Some comments:

- I know I had a red lap but I'm not sure how the game decided I should start last.

- Less than 30 seconds into the video I realize it's useless and I have to switch to bonnet view because you can't see anything behind you otherwise. I really should force myself to practice in bonnet view. I normally use and much prefer the dash view. But switching between views makes it a little tricky as you readjust to match your perception.

- At about 0:32, I could see it happening and tried to make way (stay to the left).

- 0:58 ~ 2:22 - This sequence shows the great strides Eutechnyx made in prediction code and how, for the most part, it's now possible to have really close, tight, lag free racing in this game.

- 3:21 FREEZE! It looks in this shot like bullie has WAY overshot in the braking point and I quickly take advantage and turn up the inside. I thought I was cleanly passed and while I was driving I didn't realize that he may have had a nose up my rear. Freezing again at 3:26 and looking in my mirror I was a little shocked to see it looked like I may have put him out and if that's the case, I apologize. It wasn't until 3:40 that I began to wonder where he was and what happened.

- 5:30 New_soul! Do you mean, you REALLY can't get passed Mario. Let me show you how it's done! (This was lucky of course).

- 6:43 - New_soul tells me what he thinks of my pass.

- 7:33 - I fub the gear shift and momentary shift into 5th instead of 3rd.

- In generally, the quality of the video gets worse and worse.

Hi all
First a big thanks to Jeff for organising this event.
Clearly there was some connection problems, and for what I heard some lag.
I had some reseversion before this event because it clearly didn't favore the
wheel drivers. And then I go and win the event(go figure),but it was due to
other peoples misfortune.

Hockenheim
After a horrible qual.(red lap)I was in 2th on the grid.Got a great start and wasin the lead, with new_soul on my tail.He tryed to pass severel time on lap one,but after a pretty hard hit(lag Issue)at the second to last corner,he backed off(or crached I dont know). After that I was alone with a big lead.
So the rest of the race I did alone.

Silverstone S
I started last(tought It was surposed to be race positions, but maby im mistaken)
I tryed to stay clear of the trouble but it wasn't easy.It is not a good track when there is so much traffic.Had some scarry moments but after a couple of laps suddently I was in the lead:dunce:The rest of the race I was chased by new_soul and he was closing Pretty fast.Luckly I was able to hold it to the end.

Monza
Again a red lap qual. And again that stupid game placed me near the front???
Pulled to the side at the start and joint the fun in 10th place.
Had some great racing at this track but I cant remember who I overtook(I was relying on seeing the video after the race but for some reason it didn't recorded at all)
When I eventually got to 3th place I had 10-11 sec up to new_soul and i know after many pratice races during the week that he was lapping faster than me.I was holding the gap to him, when he made a mistake on lap 10 I think.Suddently I was only 3-4 sec behind, but he was still to quick so the gap grow again. On the last lap I was about to lap 2 people who was fighting pretty hard,so I backed off so I didnt interfeer with there battle.
Overall a good event with not so much action for me.But it was still fun.

thanks steve...

i have just been watching the excelent video posted from jeff and noticed that above all the race cars there is the name of the person driving.. on my screen there is no names so i dont know who is who, is there a buton to turn this on ?.

Video 2 - Hockenheim (I won't post III unless requested since it's just me driving alone for ~ 3 laps)

Some comments:

- 1:22 - I can't believe I screwed this up.

- 2:50 - I see Hairy-Dave is leaving a message confirming he didn't leave on his own. But as we are already 7 laps into the race, I didn't think it was fair to consider a restart.

- 3:02 - Danger! But it's my chance to pounce.

- 4:30 ~ 7:50 - GREAT battle with Turnupdaheat! 👍

I don't know if there is a way to toggle it within the game, but it is under settings (under name tags). Many drivers prefer not to use them becaue they're a bit distracting but especially in lieu of the fact that many of us were using default livery, I think it's worth it.
