This thread is dedicated to the four specific classes of SCCA road racing which consist of single-seat, purpose-built prototype race cars. The allure of this style of racing is how awesome these racing machines look. I have even been drawn to people taking formula-type race cars and putting on extra body work to make them into legal Sports Racer machines. For a Club Racing level of racing, these cars are completely capable. Here is a closer look at some of the autos racing in these Sports Racer classes:

Stohr can be thought of as the Audi of the club racing ranks. In a class of racing that was going to go defunct, Stohr has been the latest premier racing machine. The latest weapon from Stohr is the Stohr WF1. This is a beautiful machine that is incredibly capable. This group has won the D Sports Racer class in this year's Valvoline Runoffs at Heartland Park Topeka. See for yourself here: < http://www.stohr.com/html/dsr.html >.

Speaking of Audi, Speads has a machine which closely resembles an Audi R8. Even during the introduction of one of the Sports Racer classes on Speed Channel, the announcer said "this is NOT an Audi R8..." This specific Audi R8-looking machine is the Speads RS. Here is a picture of the Speads RS: < http://www.sbrooks.freeserve.co.uk/jk07/RS07.htm >. Now here are some pictures of the Speads RS that gives us a reminder of the love-it-or-hate-it Audi R8: < http://sports.racer.net/chassis/speads/page1.htm >. But hey... at least this is better than people trying to ugly up cars to look like their favorite Nextel Cup driver's car.

There is a package available for owners of Swift 008 or DB-4 to convert their machine into a legit C Sports Racer machine. It's called the Swift Viking CSR. The finished product looks very nice. See for yourself: < http://sports.racer.net/chassis/swift/index.htm >. It almost makes me wonder what it would look like if formula race cars ranging from Formula Ford all the way up to Formula 1 put on some extra body work to make them into Sports Racer machines. Only problem I'd have is that the engine may not hold up for anything longer than about two hours. However, there have been Sports Racer machines like this that have competed in club races including the 25 Hours of Thunderhill. Here are links of the Swift Viking CSR: < http://sports.racer.net/chassis/swift/viking/page1.htm > and the Johnson Swift DSR: < http://sports.racer.net/chassis/swift/johnson_page1.htm >.

Last, but not least, the Spec Racer Ford class: < http://www.scca-enterprises.com/fscca_srscca.html > and the Sports Racer SCCA (SRSCCA): < http://www.scca-enterprises.com/fscca_srscca.html >. I first heard of the SRF machines in 2001 during the days of Speedvision. I thought they would be pretty cool to race if I was competiting in the Houston SCCA region. I have very few resources on SRSCCA, so use the links I've provided.

Love these cars and the brands of racing they offer? Do you perhaps work on or race in this class yourself? This is a general thread on these kinds of race cars. I will make an effort to come up with related SCCA threads in the future highlighting on certain classes of competition. Dare to kick things off?

I love the Sports Racer Class. they remind so much of Le Mans Prototypes. particularly, the Stohr and the Spec Racer, which reminds me of the Dome S101 and the Snobeck(a car that never raced).
