Hey, guys. I've been really slow on hw at school and my grades are starting to drop. The reason for this is my cross country training practice that tires me out everyday. I get home at around 6:00 and I go to sleep soon afterwards. When comes at around 8:00, I'm still tired. After dinner, I get 2 hours of homework time everyday before I gotta start getting ready to sleep at 11. My question is that can anyone give me some advice to keep up grades and this sport? I really enjoy running but the tiredness it his brought me has really hit my whole life.

My incentive to join XC was to stay fit and join my school's quest for a repeat national championship.

National championship? Depending on your importance among teammates, that could land you a spot in college straight off without a second glance at grades. Keep that in mind.

And for grades, two words for you: time management. I'm not playing a sport at the moment (lacrosse starts in the Spring), but taking AP courses has taught me the evils of procrastinating. Here are some steps:

1. Keep a day-to-day planner.

2. After you get home, split every assignment you receive up into manageable segments, one for each night between now and the due date. If you do that, you may even have the audacity to knock out two segments in one night when you have easier practices or bus rides to away meets, giving you the next night off.

3. Make sure you do NOT, under any circumstances, get behind on the material. Ask questions, stay after class a second or two to confirm a question you may have had, just make sure you understand. Don't make it harder than it needs to be.

I did this, and I'm currently on a night where I did two segments last night and even did a bit of tomorrow's work, and still have time to browse the forums and watch football :). I'm taking two AP course this semester as well.

Hope I could help bro!

Thanks man. Will try for a week to see if anything goes my way. What about studying? How much time should i allot for that. I also have a problem with attention. I constantly check youtube, GTP, and facebook, and i get so sidetracked . Any suggestions on that part?

Train before school? That way you'll feel tired at school and only miss boring stuff leaving you're energy free for homework when you get home.

What about studying?

Just be patient with studying and spend as much time as you need. It's better to put aside more time than you need and have spare time than not have enough time and rush. Also try putting your phone/laptop in another room and shutting the door.

Thanks for the tips, Cam. Will try this whole next week. I got a meet tomorrow and I'm tired as hell.

Im sure if you explained to your teachers the situation i'm sure they will understand. Unless they are absolute poo shoots :) i have a similar problem, between school, football, work, my personal time i find it hard to get the time to do school work :)

A few of my friends swim for up to 20 hours a week (crazy people) as they are at national level. They get up at like 3.30 am and swim for two hours before school and then a few hours in the evening. I know both of them get really quite tired if they don't eat properly (not enough carbs and such forth for energy) and also it takes their bodies a few weeks to adjust after having a break from the intensive routine of training so hopefully you will find the same that in a few weeks the tiredness will reduce 👍 Both do well at school as well and have a social life, I don't know how they find the time though, its all possible it just requires careful time management and they use free time during school e.g. lunch and free lessons to do their homework. Hope this is helpful for you 👍

Thanks. The problem with explaining my situation to my teachers is that my English teacher is the girl's and that she would oppose any idea I had. For now, timed management is key to keep up.

I'm having similar trouble with hockey, work and school. I've been working a lot out of necessity, virtually all of the cooks at my work left to go to university/college this year, so out of necessity the other kids in grade 12 have had to step up and work 5 or 6 days a week. It's nice to be making money, but I think I'll have trouble keeping up with school, working 30+ hours a week, and playing hockey. I'm going to have to implement something like CAM suggested.

Well I have some experience in this. Back in high school I played or trained for hockey 5 and 6 days a week plus high school plus work the days I didn't have hockey.

I can tell you it was absolutely difficult and I won't sugar coat that as your pretty much figuring that out now.

I had an awesome teacher once talk to us about passion and what really means something to you. This is where you yourself have to decide what time is given to where. If your really determined to do cross country than sacrifices will likely need to be made in your social life. If that social life means more than cross country than it may be the other way around.

I'm not saying there is a right answer there and I'm not saying if you choose cross country you can't have a social life but rather that when you find something your really passionate about the rest becomes easy and nothing feels like a sacrifice because your doing something you enjoy.

As others have suggested you can always work on your skills in organizing and studying to help keep you on top of things and prioritizing what's important. Day planners certainly help, making sure your eating healthy and drinking plenty of water/fluids will help with the tiredness too. If I may suggest to, try skipping the nap one day and stay awake until 10 and then sleep as that way your maximizing your time in a deep sleep instead of a light nap and shorter deep sleep?

Best of luck and remember high school is fun so enjoy it while it lasts.
