Forgotten Wing
I got bored, and so I decided to try a little science experiment. I have a magnet here, and a computer monitor. Although I know it's probably bad for the computer, I held the magnet up to the front of the monitor. Never for more than 2 seconds, but each time, I found some freaky colors when I held the magnet up. I've stopped, but couldn't help report my findings...
(monitor's not messed up or anything, just that I got bored... oh yeah! the magnet seemed to get pulled toward the screen more the closer I got)

**** thats hella scary, cuz when i held the magnet next to the screen it changed color and my cell fone went off, my cuzn was calling me....

Don't try this at home! You may permanently damage your monitor. And the same goes for your television set. Don't do it!

Man, I hope nobody tried that alcohol-in-the-air-filter-trick.

Ha, I tried this the other day, except it was an accident. There was a magnetic screwdriver standing up right next to the monitor.

i accidentally put my 10" sub under my TV when i first bought it. took 2 months for the colors to go away.

I notice that when i put my speakers too close to my monitor for a long period of time the colors on the side get purple on the right and greenish on the left. WEIRD!

One of our Tvs at school has rainbow colours right across, it's pretty funny watching stuff on it.

OK, when you do this, two things happen:

In a CRT monitor, the picture is drawn by electrons hitting a flourescent coating on the screen. Thus, when you put a magnet near the screen, the magnetic field disrupts the path of the electrons and creates some freaky damage. This is not threatening to the monitor.

However, there is a fine mesh between the electron guns and the screen, and this allows for the colour separation and pixel definition. This is extremely fine as it needs to guide the electrons to their position on the screen. It can be bent and dislodged by a magnet, and this will wreck the TV/Monitor. Permanently. Forever. This is what pupik was warning us about.

Garconis has noticed this by using unshielded speakers. Since all speakers are is massive electromagnets, you need to use a specific kind if you are having them in proximity to your TV/Monitor. Basically, these speakers have magnetic shielding built into the box, which prevents the massive magnetic fields from causing damage to your monitor.

Whenever I hold my phone to the monitor, when an incoming phone call is about to arrive, the picture goes fuzzy.

I can then hold the phone ready.

Rules.

Yeah, but it isnt permanent. Atleast I hope not. I turn off my monitor for a few seconds and it goes back to normal. Its barely noticeable when its messed up anyways. I just hope its not slowly changing the brightness or color, and that i cant notice because its changing SO slow. :P
