SCPH - 50003 Laser Replacement

My PS2 laser has gone totally bust and I'm replacing it - but I read on another website that for the SCPH-50003 console, which is my model, another "special onboard chip" needs replacing. Can anyone elaborate on this a little please? Surely you should be able to get another laser, plug it in, and go. :confused:
 
Decline and buy a new ps2, the newer ones now don't overheat as much as the previous slimline's.
 
Yeah, it is cheaper just to buy a new PS2 than it is to replace parts. You might even get a good deal with a new PS2... get a free game or controller when you purchase a new PS2.
