I had a good idea for a thread....

So, I'm sure you've come across hundreds of threads saying "I searched everywhere but couldn't find something similar" etc.

I thought we could have a thread where people asked "is there a thread about".
That way we don't have loads of useless threads with 2 BTL posts.
It would work as follows....

Member A - Is there a thread about cars that people hate?

Member B - Yep. Here you go: https://www.gtplanet.net/forum/showthread.php?t=272299 :)

Or....

Member A) - Is there a thread about "Lampshades"? (couldn't think of anything.)

Member B) - No, you should/could make one. :)

---------

And, people could also ask where to post a thread, so there's not multiple Moved threads. :)

---------

What do we think? ;)

Actually in the vast majority of cases the "where to post" is common sense*. Occasionally a post would fit fine in either of two (or more) areas. In that case just flip a coin.

*No, the people posting stuff completely unrelated to GT5 in the GT5 forum, or posting GT5 stuff in the GT4 forum or general forums, aren't using common sense.

If the search function is used properly, there would be no need for a thread like this.

If someone won't take the time to post their thread in what is usually the obviously correct place on the forum, or take the time to search for their thread topic before posting it, what makes you think they will take the time to post their thread idea in this hypothetical topic? Just because they can make someone else do it for them in that case?

Thing is, members who have enough common sense to search for threads already do so. Seeing as GTP's Google search is a lot more accurate than the 'Search Forums' feature when it comes to finding what you want. It shouldn't be that hard.

Those who lack common sense don't tend to search very hard (if at all), and post threads that aren't needed. Chances are they won't take advantage of the kind of thread you're suggesting either if I'm honest. Especially if you're putting said thread in a section of the forum those members never visit.

They need to replace the old search with that one then because I hate the one next to your user name.

But the one next to your username is better than Google in some respects.

Try limiting your search to one forum (or 2, or 4, 7) using Google. The advanced search can do that.

Try looking for one person's posts using Google. The advanced search can do that.

Try telling Google to sort them with oldest first. The advanced search can do that.

Also, I know it doesn't affect you, but the Google search can't search through the premium forums or the mods forums. The advanced search can do that.

Each has it's advantages and disadvantages, but one cannot replace the other.

Good point, never even thought of about that.
