Searching for a new virus scanner and new firewall

I'm using Norton Antivirus 2005, and it's very good. I don't notice it hogging resources at all.

Work enforce McAfee, and it's rubbish. My client uses Sophos, which is much better.

With regard to firewalls, I don't use them. I have a router with all port forwarding turned off, and that has done quite well in the pen-tests I've run on it.

When I say "quite well", what I actually mean is that it's achieved the best possible result in each test ever run against it.

If it didn't...

Open ports can be helpful, though. Generally only for temporary purposes, though, so as long as you remember to close them after you're finished, a hardware firewall can't be beat.

Norton is heavier on resources than a lot of other AVs, however if you have a fast computer, you probably wouldn't notice.

Well, apart from outgoing attacks (e.g. trojans). The router wouldn't stop those (that is, if you got infected in the first place, which is fairly unlikely)

I use Spy Sweeper. It scans for everything. I like it.

Sorry, but no.

Spy Sweeper doesn't remove viruses. It MAY find them, but it doesn't find viruses. It only scans for adware and spyware, plus it's $50 for just that.

According to this, KASPERSKY is the best. I have been using kaspersky for a long time now, and i love it!

Kaserpsky caused some problems on my desktop where I installed Kaspersky for trial purposes :(

And I heard that Zone Alarm submit data to the Zone Alarm server. But there's a method to stop it.

I'm not quite sure if I should buy Kaspersky. And AVG free edition bothers my with an email scanner which is - honestly - rubbish.

I can't get my mails when this thing activets itself :(

You've mentioned so many programs that I've completely lost the overview. Maybe I should make a survey?

Yeah, just make one. I have used Norton, Kapsersky, and Panda.

Btw.. Here's a small preview of my new firewall.. Aforementioned m0n0wall in a case some might recognise ;)

ZoneAlarm Internet Suite just been suggested by professionals on tv today. They say its the best to date, all the protection needed in it. It worth the price, I have it myself, nothing cant beat it... :)

Hi.

Just want to inform you that the problems with the restarts of my computers were caused because of Kaspersky!

I deinstalled it and now everything works fine!

Yeah Zone Alarm sounds very good to me. but have you heard that the program submits some data to the Zone Alarm company?

There's a way to stop this but I can't find it anymore.

Hey moonwall looks fine but it would be too complicated. I'm buying a router next week for my parents so I can use Wlan too.

It's m0n0wall - And some pictures of the finished box should be up pretty soon.. All I need to do is finish up a little wiring around the LED / Button area..

Hmm just interested if this is a kit to assemble or have you built it on your own? Do you have WLAN in it?

Sorry if this is a silly question.

Not silly at all..

And no, it's not a kit. Basically you just round up whatever old PC parts you can use, any Pentium above 100Mhz will do you. A couple of netcards, preferably an IDE - CF card adapter and a 128Mb or more RAM (m0n0wall will only read and write to the CF when booting and when saving configurations. Everything else is kept in RAM to preserve the CF card).. Put everything in a PC case and you're done...

I'm just more than a little silly, so I decided to stick everything in PS2 case since I think 3 PS2s on the shelf would look cool (1 x Firewall, 1 x Mail / Webserver and 1 x Test server)..

And yes, mine will, with the next version of m0n0wall ,have Wireless access. The problem with my card is that it isn't supported in version 4.x of FreeBSD. But eventually it'll also serve as a Wireless accesspoint for my PSP and laptop.
But buy a card supported by FreeBSD and m0n0wall will work as a WLAN aswell.

Sorry for the lousy pictures.. I think our camera is fubar...
