Guys & Girls,
Back in 1997 (if my memory serves me), I was a mad gamer about 10 years younger than I am today, the Sega Saturn was still being sold, but was being trounced in the sales figures by a cheaper Sony Playstation.
I remember I was working in Farnborough, Hampshire, UK at the time, and there was a GAME shop (or similar retail gaming chain) in Kingsmead, the main pedestrianised shopping street.
This shop was advertising in their window a promotional package of a Sega Saturn, memory cartridge, 2 steering wheels and a Formula 1 game. They may have also been throwing in Daytona USA and/or Sega Rally Championship with the deal.
As it was not payday until the next day, I returned with a full wallet 24 hours later, to discover that the new promotion had abruptly ended, but similar promotions were now being offered but without the Formula 1 game.
The reason behind this (allegedly) was that Jacque Villeneuve had copyrighted his name & image, and therefore it couldn't be used in the game, so the game was pulled, later replaced with F1 Challenge 97, which had 'Driver NumberOne' (black silhouette for picture) from Canada driving for Williams. Hmmm... wonder who that could be. Other Formula 1 games (including one on the N64) had the same problem, and I think Playstation had a double problem of JV as well as an issue about using the FIA logo on the cover of their release.
Anyway, I digress. The original Sega Saturn Formula 1 game that was pulled from the shelves not only included JV as a driver, but more importantly had the two-player mode with vertical split screen, not horizontal, whereas the others were all horizontal.
I do not remember the name of the original game, but I am keen to find out, so I can somehow obtain one - they must exist, as they were on sale for at least a week in the UK. I have a blurry feeling that the cover may have been predominantly yellow (but may be wrong about this).
Grateful for any insight anyone can give. I have tried various Sega Saturn websites, but they don't mention anything about it.
Thanking you in advance!
