Selling cars and parts

I think that the selling aspect in the GT series needs to receive more attention in GT4 than in previous installments. In GT3, since money was so easy to come by, it wasn't really an issue. Cars only sold for 1/4 of their dealership prices, regardless of any upgrades, and you couldn't sell individual parts. In GT4, I hope they enable you to sell individual parts and also add some variables in car resale value.

For instance, a car bought from the dealership with little mileage should be able to be sold for a relatively high amount in comparison w/ its dealership price. But a car with high mileage should be of lesser value. If you buy a 118-hp Miata and turn it into a 330-hp beast, then certainly it should be worth more than what it was when you bought it. Also, parts should wear out over time like in Sega GT and become less effective the more they are used (e.g. a brand new sports muffler increases HP by 20, but as it is used more and more the increase drops). For those worried about permanent HP losses, you would have the option of overhauling the part, selling it, or buying a new one. Their resale value, like cars, should also depend on how much they have been used, and the ability to buy used parts should also be an option. I think all of these additions would make money much more valuable than it's throw-away status in previous versions.

Without a doubt, those are some of the best idea's (if not the best) I've heard since I have been on this forum.

Those are some great ideas...but the only downside is i don't think this feature would apeal to first timers of the game....probably because they don't want to have to worry about changing parts all the time just to keep there car good....or some people might not know about the feature, and there cars will start to suck and they wont' know why. Great ideas for a more racing sim audience though.

In addition to that, though, there needs to be entry fees and costs for maintaining the vehicle.

I too agree with all of that but selling parts on their own is a dumb idea. I don't want the game getting too complex. Just sell the car with all the aftermarket parts in it WITH the car, but it should be worth 25% of all the parts put in it combined with the cars MSRP.

First time buyers have time to buy and play all the way through GT3 before GT4 is released, I think the GT series would benefit greatly if it had features like that. And I don't care that some of them have been used in SEGA GT 2002, they are good ideas and PD shouldn't be ashamed of using them just as SEGA wasn't ashamed of using alot of GT ideas in SEGA GT.

Yep, yep, I probably agree with all that has been said in this thread :)

Maintainance shouldn't get too much in the way though. As for selling parts individually/all with car, why not implement both? can sell them all with car, or sell them individually as you wish.

Nah, I don't care for this idea. It sounds too complex. Remember, it's supposed to be a game, not real life.

But, I still like my idea of winning car parts along with cars in the game. Having a parts bin in your garage to store them in sounds great to me.

I have some complaints for this. I mean, when I played GT1, I played to make enough winnings to acquire the 3000GT. Let me school you cats on what I call "gambling" in GT.

When you have a ho-hum machine, you can always go for higher. But higher costs... higher. So, a method I devised is nothing really special. But what I do is that I take my current winnings, the selling price of my car, and hope they equal just enough so that I can acquire a faster, better, car. So basically, you sell your car for something better using your race winnings. If you have enough money, go get that better car. I call it "gambling," even though you'd think it sounds like crap.

Now for some COMPLAINTS about selling. In Tokyo Xtreme Racer Zero, the more miles you drive and the more modifications, the higher the sell. So in GT, the only time you can buy cars for more is if you Trade cars from another Memory Card. That way, the Stage 4 (Turbo) you installed will sell for higher than the base price. My only complaint is that, if I sell my car with mods galore, it should sell for much higher than what GT considers a "asking price." You know, 250,000 Cr for a Nissan R390 GT1 Race Car with big turbos and Super Soft tires. I mean, sell for the modifications and sell for 33% of the total price. If you can't do 33%, then 25% is fine. You should be able to sell a well-tuned car for well-tuned money. It's bad enough when you're just starting out and you got your grandfather's old, rusty station wagon to go road racing. You need all the money you can get, and sometimes, racing from cradle to the grave isn't enough to build finances.

Nice topic, Fury. Nice of someone from the land of the Atlanta Falcons.

ya know if you take all those ideas and then add, make it an online only game.. you'd have motor city online, which was an interesting game that had serious potential but sadly wasn't carried out to well and has been shut down :(

i like the idea of selling back some parts, and selling back whole cars should definately give you more money, i rarely bothered to sell any cars i had built up in gt3.

but parts degrading i don't like that idea, maybe they could possibly have problems during a race that you might need to pit for, but i don't want to need to replace parts for my car after every race or two, which is probably what it'd be, look how fast tires would wear out in gt3. plus some parts were too expensive to have to worry about replacing them, like a turbo 4 kit.

if you want a game where parts can break down and need repairs after races try nascar thunder 2004 in career mode.. pretty cool game, but lacks variety in cars and tracks (which is becuz it's based on nascar)

I don't know why you think you'd have to replace parts every race or two, PD wouldn't do that, you would end up spending more than you'd win. It would probably be down to the ammount of miles or usage a part has been done and it would be alot more forgiving than every race or two. The super soft tyres only wear out that quick in GT3 to make races more interesting, and you don't have to pay for a new set after. Also I doubt overhauling a part would cost the same as the part brand new, I say make it so that you overhaul parts or replace them, a new part can be overhauled x amount of times before it's performance starts to lessen, then you can keep overhauling it or you xcan replace it for a new part which will give you that performance back again, I don't think it should need regular overhauls say every 200-300 miles for the average part.

This could also add an extra depth to the tuning part of the game, you could have two parts say two racing intercoolers, both offer a good power boost but one is a little bit higher than the other the one with less is more reliable and will last on average an extra 75 miles over the more powerful one ect.

Remember, Kaz did say, in interviews, that the cars in GT4 will have parts that will fail during a race. Parts like the battery, suspension parts, tires and other goodies. He also said these parts will begin to degrade over repeated use, and will need replacing.
I'm guessing there could be a parts bin, of type, for you to store, or win, auto parts for your cars.

I dont think this would be very hard to impliment, I think its a damned good idea, kudos my good man

Replacing parts? Parts failing? The making of a pretty decent simulation. Usually in games, a car is basically bulletproof because no consideration is given to internals for the car. Now I heard rumors that GT4 was looking into further into car design by car parts. As I quote from this PSM magazine:

From January 2004 with title: "The Big Games for 2004"
"Everytime we hear GT4 being delayed, it's probably because creator Kazunori Yamauchi has convinced Sony's Ken Kutaragi he needs to push things a li'l further. You can imagine the conversation:
KUTARAGI: Yo! When's yo damn game coming out fool?
YAMAUCHI: Sup, beeyatch. I just worked out how to totally simulate every single working part of every car made, and I want to incorporate that into the game.
KUTARAGI: Another two months for that shizzle?
YAMAUCHI: You bet your dizzle.
All Japanese geniuses talk like Snoop Dogg. Last we heard, Polyphony guys were traveling the globe in search of real examples."

Well, other than the "Snoop Dogg" part, that's the part I wanted to talk about in terms of the car parts deal.
YAMAUCHI:

As for batteries failing, damn, I can't escape reality ;). Sick of keeping my car charged as its off the road.

Electricity cables for my batteries are damaged, lost the race after just the first corner  , Need to repair them, costs: 3 credits     :p :p :p :p

You know what you could have so that something like the battery thing doesn't happen? You could have a tune-up, which would be like just scanning through your motor and making sure all your connections, filters, and etc. are okay, that would cost very little... maybe 100-500. That way, the chances of a minor problem imparing you during the race are very little. On the other hand, if you decide not to check on your car, then your belt might snap, and you lose the race or something... or, maybe instead of losing the race, they could pull you off and replace the broken bit, then send you off again... just a little further behind the pack.

Now lets have a big orange tow truck to pull us off the trck, and have a cheat which allows you to actually drive it and tow others away for bonus points. Totally rad! :odd:

I can see where you all are coming from but, personally, I think that being able to sell individual parts is a good idea. You may buy a Stage 4 Turbo to complete one race and after you have completed it, you have no need or want for it anymore. So instead of just being stuck with it and having wasted all that money on one race, you could just sell it and lose a couple $100 or $1,000. For those worried about their parts degrading super quick and having to pay lots of money to replace them/overhaul them, the game designers wouldn't necessarily have to make the parts wear out that quick. They life of the part could be set to wherever PD sees fit (as long as it is realistic and not costing more money to maintain than to race). Each part in the tune shop would have a specified estimate of part life, say, 3,000 miles (I'm sure this figure would be much higher in real life but since a single car in a game is rarely driven that much miles or even 3,000 then PD could play around with this figure a little bit). After 3,000 or so miles, the part becomes worn and you have the choice of continuing to use it (at a reduced hp), replacing it, overhauling it (which would be cheap compared to the original price), or selling it. Each part should wear depending on its own individual miles, not the car's miles. For instance, if you buy a Stage 2 NA Tune-Up but don't equip it and leave it just sitting in your garage while you accumulate mileage on your car, that mileage shouldn't be counted against the part. So if you buy a part but don't actually use it until 15 races later, it should perform like brand new. To warn or prevent someone from entering a race with a dead battery, bad oil, or some other type of negative condition, a pre-race screen should show all the parts equipped on your car and what kind of condition they are in.

Think about it. Although it wouldn't be a big feature, it could be a really nice one if PD executed it right.

I used to play on online game called Motor City Online (ea games) in where they released rare paint jobs, parts, etc every so often for winning races and competing in tournements. It was awesome, and though there were downright unbeatable combos, most ultra rare parts only lasted for 50 miles, and netted a sale price of over 5 Million (alot in the game) in an auction based sale section similar to that of ebay (but within the game). The whole system regulated money, parts and tirewear, keeping the track fairly even for all. They had different tracks (drag & streeT) so that 0-60 cars could be made and win races without having to turn, and adversly, low power, ultra handling cars could also win races. Also the HP rating could be set on certain races to help level the playing field. Even Chassis racked up miles. I never had one fall apart on me, but in a player based auction form, low mileage chassis really drove market prices. my 2 cents.

Ive been playing GT since its debut on PS1 and subsequently bought a 3000GT VR4 (2 actually) mainly because I fell in love with it in the game. I hope GT4 will not dissappoint me. Unfortunately MCO did and is no longer operational, so GT4 is my only hope....without taking things back to the street. Anyone want to race?

Another feature that would be nice is if you have one high milage car with good parts on it and you just bought another new car to replace that your parts should carry over to the new car at no cost becuase they're your parts. That would save time and money by not having to go and get those same parts again that you just had and made no money on when you sold your car. Just an idea.

That's what Arcade Mode is for ;)

Sound like some good ideas and would definitely add another aspect to the game.

it would be nice to have like car ware too like u bye the same car you own because it is wore out but u keep the parts to put on the new one

Isn't that what I just said?
Welcome to GTP by the way.:)

If anyone has played the Colin Mcrae series. you'll remember how they had a damage assesment screen after each stage. It would show what has been damaged and its severity, They can do the same thing here with the ability to replace the part. In the same menu, if you choose "replace" then it will take you to the "buy parts" screen. If you choose "tune-up" then it tell you how much it costs and % effectiveness vs. replacing the part. That I think would not be too daunting for new people. An idea....

Yah that's a very good idea, but it being PD, they'd want to show realistic damage and they have already said that there was no viewable damage.

One more thing that may increase the price of a used car is its results in races and championships.

You see IRL, racing cars with historical results are negociated at a higher rank than other same cars.

I was estonished when I sold in GT3 my GT40 and found the price devided.

The more you win with a car, the more it becomes some kind of legend. ( if you have enough legend races obviously .. remember the history of racing promised for GT4)

And then you can sell it.

Or you can develop some kind of Museum, people should pay to enter in ... more income for you and your racing team...

Imagine, GT4 Story Line with history revival through the past century...

and when you have finished this story line, you have the possibility to walk in your museum (PGR2 like) watching movies ( replays ) of your victories in Le Mans or SPA with the winning car standing next to you...

( I really have to buy a new TV !!!!!)

You see ?

I always wanted PD to put in some classic footage of car races in the game. They did that with previous GT titles, but you couldn't see them well enough. They had some words scrolling by, which blocked the image.

P2C, i like your ideas, adds alot more depth and more incentive to keep racing

I'm really convinced that this is the way the game will evolve...

I can not be sure a 100 % but history of racing may be the real background of the game...

If this is the case, this would be perfect as it is exactly what I like in racing and cars...

Please PD, take your time.

Cars are surely ready, physics and AI already improved and tracks waiting for battles. The remaining efforts are surely based on Live and story line... so take your time !!!!
