What are sequential shifters that are relatively inexpensice and work with the G27 for GT5?

None... the only hope would be to do the G27 to G25 shifter mod which someone demonstarted in a thread near the bottom of the thread page. Seems like a quite resonably easy thing to do...

There are likely other modifications you can pull off by splitting the wire off the paddles and running them to a homemade sequential mechanism.

Not actually that difficult to make one work. You just need a PS3 compatible controller, be it a cheapo 3rd party controller or your G27 itself (which I wouldn't recommend because if you damage the pcb board in the process you are effed).

Take your controller and break it open and remove the PCB board from it and then solder the sequential shifter's wires to the board and map the controller within GT5 accordingly. You will have to pay attention to which terminal on the board you are soldering your shifter to and map the correct buttons. In addition to your shifter you can wire up as many buttons and switches as the aftermarket controllers board has terminals, this how people make button boxes for their hardcore PC sims. You can either build a shifter your self with some metal and switches and other things or you can purchase one like a Frex Shift+ and do it that way.

I should say I havn't done this yet, only because I first need a cockpit on which to build it, but I have done quite a bit of research into the idea. Check out this thread https://www.gtplanet.net/forum/showthread.php?t=236170, which has been probably the best resource I've come across for the project.
