Serious hiccup when entering Rumble Strip

I go through the forums I frequent with Bookmark buttons at the top of Firefox. I can just bat through the different pages without any troubles and they load pretty much instantly, but when I hit Rumble Strip it gets caught up. It catches, but then stops for a little, then Firefox comatoses to Not Responding status for 10-12 seconds, recovers and comes back around and loads properly. It's the only one that does this out of all three Automotive forums, Premo, Photography and Music.

Is it the relative higher traffic there? The tomb of subforums at the top? Any other problems for anyone?

My guess is there's something iffy with the bookmark that's been stored and Firefox throws a wobbler when you try to use it.. Have you tried deleting it and adding it again?

Nope, I get the same problem sometimes. On some days it's the Rumble Strip, and on some days it's GT4. I think it does have to do with traffic, because I don't use bookmarks for GTP pages. It happens every time I click "Gran Turismo 4" or "The Rumble Strip", depending on which is being slow at a particular moment, but no subforums or threads within them.

Higher traffic in a particular forum should not have any impact on it's performance, and the fact that your browser is actually crashing tells me that this is likely a client-side issue. If both you and Austin could share your OS and exact browser version, it would be helpful.

Also, just out of curiosity, do subsequent pages in the troublesome forums also cause problems? Please try looking at several, specifically pages which do not contain any threads created by you. Finally, try disabling all of your Firefox extensions, restart the browser, and see if the problem still affects you.

I'm still using Firefox 2.0 on Vista, with no extensions. There is no problem loading anything beyond the main pages of the two mentioned subforums. To clarify, it only happens intermittently, but for some period of time (perhaps a couple hours? 30 minutes? a day?) the delay is present each time you load the page.

I'm really not bothered by it, and it hasn't happened to me the past several days. Unless it's a serious problem for exigeracer, it probably is on our end and you don't really have to investigate it.

It seemed to work itself out a little later. If I feel it coming back again, I'll post up as much relevant info as I can. Thanks though.

It's back. Windows Vista Home Premium, Firefox 3.0.1, crashing when allowing all and no scripts with NoScript 1.7.9.

Only accessing the main Rumble Strip page has lag with all opening methods: Bookmark, text links, containing participated threads, non-participatory ones, everything.

The only clean load I can find is if I go directly to the Strip from a blank homepage in a freshly opened window or tab.

Honestly, I have no idea what's going on. I'm unable to replicate the problem, and the fact that you are a Premium user eliminates the possibility of any faulty advertisements. Do you have a thread (one that you created) on the main Rumble Strip page that is giving you trouble? Did you try clearing your cache? Does the problem occur on both the Default and GTP Lite forum styles? What about the Mobile version?

No threads giving me trouble. Still crashing.
Cleared cache. Still crashing.
Default skin. Still crashing.
Lite skin. Still crashing.
Mobile. No crash!!!!!

So I'm not sure if that helps you, but it doesn't really help me 'cause there isn't much of a chance that I'll be surfing GTP using mobile all of the time.

I don't expect you to use the mobile version, I'm just trying to help you narrow down the source of your problem. Once again, I ask if you have created any of the threads which appear on the Rumble Strip page that is giving you trouble. I can't check this myself because I don't know how many threads per page you are viewing. The reason I keep asking you this question is because of the AJAX functionality that allows you to double-click on the table cell around your thread title to edit it. It's presence is the one thing I can think of that would vary between the different forums.

Also, can you replicate the problem in another browser, such as IE, Opera, or Safari?

Sorry if I seemed snappy or demanding. It's not at all the tone I felt nor meant to portray.

No, didn't mention it properly, but there aren't any threads of mine on the page.

I cannot replicate the issue with IE.

The reason I initially believed traffic was the cause is because it is not always lagging. Right now it jumps to the Strip right away, and continues to work properly if I open new windows or tabs.

Yes, I'm trying to think of any element of the page which could change over time, but the AJAX title editor is the only thing I can think of. The fact that it only affects that single forum makes it even more perplexing. Have you actually noticed a correlation between the number of users online in the forum and when the problem appears?

As for the next step, would it inconvenience you to completely uninstall Firefox, and then start anew with a fresh copy? I'd be very interested to see if that fixes the problem, as nearly one quarter of all our visitors are using the exact same browser version as you (FF 3.0.1), including myself, without issue.

Well I had the same thing happened to me, but its just not only GTP, but facebook as well! Its nothing really major, it just kinda suddenly have the cannot access page thingy appear, but when I refresh the page loads up properly.....

I do think this is more of a Firefox problem than anything. I had a bad problem with Firefox 3 on my currently dead PC and had to switch back to Firefox 2. On my dad's laptop here I'm using Firefox 3, which didn't have an issue other than this one. I had no problem whatsoever using Opera, but I don't use IE anymore cause it sucks.... 👎

The only thing I can think of is that Firefox may have a problem on certain PC's running a certain applications on the background. I don't really know but I think this has nothing to do with GTP or the web traffic.....

This just happened to me too, and it can't be traffic, there was only 16 people in the forum (8 members & 8 guests) Here is some info:

Windows XP SP2
Firefox 2.0.0.16
GTP Lite
I am using an Intel Pentium 4, if that is any useful info

Jordan, I'll try reinstalling the Fox and seeing what happens. I also wanted to mention earlier that it seemed to be a daytime problem, but refrained as it's just a notion and not something I could confidently say.

When I get the same fit again I'll get Firefox sorted... Thanks for the help and I'll let you know what I find.

This isn't the same problem. I refresh and it hits the same wall.

The Rumble's been behaving for the last couple of days, but last night and this morning it was still catchy. I just uninstalled Firefox and started with a fresh one. The exact same problem persists.

I can manage with visiting the Strip less, but if you're up for a project and want to solve this mystery, I'd be a happy GTPer! Thanks 👍

Well, that's not good news. :grumpy: I'm going to be upgrading the forum sometime this weekend. It's a "maintenance" release and has lots of bug and performance fixes. I doubt that will fix anything for you, but there are a few more involved things we can do to troubleshoot after that.
