Ive played GT5 for year and a half now and i start my online gaming with the worst internet connection ever i had around 2 mega thats all i had and still got into rooms easy and stopped in the same room for hours at a time doing long races to level up and that was with 2 mega of internet .

Now i got 30 mega of internet you would think ad not have any problems at all but . No every update the servers get worst and worst and worst ! and dose not stop they .

One of my friend lives in Australia and he is having the same problems .

Put it this way . If i was to make a room and have it set to 16 people and start the race 40% of the time starts with a black screen , 70% of the time people get disconnected , 90% of the time peoples mics breaks up .

The best way to stop this is to set the room to 12 - 13 people and kick everyone that joins lol .

By the way its not just because my friends in Australia im friends with alot of people on this game and its in 90% of the rooms .

You internet provider sucks. Not to be rude, sorry. You also might want to check your router capability to the ps3, 8 out of 10 times this is the issue. PS3 doesn't support wireless "N", so anyone using a router with only N capabilities will face problems.

There are a million (give or take a few) threads about this, do a search, check them out and look for clues.

Awfully big conclusion you've jumped to there.

I know, but I've been seeing so many online issues that stem from their ISP (not just on GTP but all over the internet). If you have a shared internet connection, like cable, you might run into problems during peak times.

Most people see "Unlimited Internet $20/month" and don't stop to think if its reliable.

Well given the op is in the UK and says he has a 30Meg connection I believe he's therefore got fibre optic cable from Virgin and it's very reliable, at least in my experience (I have the same thing).

I've actually noticed a decrease in the performance of the servers immediately following the update, as well. I can't speak to "every update" but this last one has given me more trouble than the last.

Touche, pretty impressive stats.

I've increased my race quality to Very High, and have increased stability. However, my friends that use wifi can't join because their routers can't keep up. It sucks that I can't race with them, but their connections have caused too many problems in the past.

If you're hosting, try playing with the race quality settings. Even the best and fastest ISP turns to junk when throttled. Run a internet test to see if it's your ISP holding you back.

Thanks everyone 👍 going to try some setting out and see if it helps it :)

Went with High quality last night without problems, but the room never filled up and I had some storms. Further testing needed.

Which is odd because in v1.00 there weren't actually any servers...

GT5 is peer-to-peer. If your lobbies are unstable it's because someone (and not necessarily one person) in the lobby has an unstable connection or because they're so far away that the furthest apart two points in the lobby have a latency measurable in seconds.

Say you, in Sheffield, are playing a guy in Christchurch, New Zealand. Your ping to your local server on Pingtest may be 10-40ms. His ping to his local server on Pingtest may be 10-40ms. But the ping between the two of you could be 800ms+...

Doesn't race quality effect ping? Seems like the description indicates so, but I'm no expert. I've just found what works for me.

They're sort of hand in hand. You should set your race quality to account for not only your upload and ping but also the other people you're likely to play with.

If a guy in Sheffield with a 12ms local ping sets his race quality to ":censored:kicking awesome" and a guy in Christchurch with a 12ms local ping sets his race quality to ":censored:kicking awesome" and the play each other, they're going to have a bad time of it, because the ping's really 640ms - that's 1.2s for information to leave one console and then return to it - and it should be set to "Justin Bieber".

You should also take account of your upload speed. Sending 16kB (that's kilobytes) of data from Sheffield to Christchurch and taking 0.6s to do so is... week. If you only have a 128kb (that's kilobits) upload connection, it'll then take a full second to actually upload it to be sent in the first place. If you're both blessed, that'll be 3.2s to send 16kB from one console to another and then back again...

I was playing at low, to accommodate more people, but that seemed to cause more problems, however it did allow weaker connections, which killed everyone with a decent connection. I get that.

I'm hardwired to my modem, not really anything I can think of to make it better for everyone.

I understand your points, Famine, but the instances where I (personally) have had problems since the update has been in rooms populated by the exact same people that I raced with before the update. Read: League events.

I had solved all of the problems with my ISP and was completely free and clear of any connection issues between myself and anyone I ran across, and those in my league were no exception. Since the update, I have had connection problems, loading bar issues, specifically, with at least one of those people.

Since the update or since GT Academy? While the actual online racing is peer to peer, there's a lot of data communication with regional and central servers - the same ones GT Academy uses, and GT Academy hammers them. See how it is in three or four weeks.

It's also worth a note that doing everything you can for your own connectivity is great and all, but it's only 10% of the battle in a ten man lobby. All it takes is one guy to not do the same and your lobby is boned.

Edit: Or, of course, one guy's ISP to not be as transparent as yours, or pick that time of day to throttle his connection.

If I may suggest something, I know most of you play with headsets activated, but I don't. Mainly because I got none myself (I rather enjoy PS3 sound on my stereo which also makes GT5 sound a little better) and, because of whatever reason, even when I set voice chat to highest quality possible in my lobbies, all I get when people are talking is unidentifical pieces of words and sentences. It's like lagging; I hear them for a small moment (a very small one, 1 or 2 words), than it's interrupted, continuing a few seconds later again just to interrupted again. I have the same when I join any random open lobbies where I don't know what quality voice chat is set too, so I usually just end up muting the people anyway.
When I'm in a private lobby though, organising a photoshooting or cruise (yeah, basically I do anything in GT5 but racing :) ) with headsets activated is no problem at all, I can understand what the others say if they have a headset. Also, it seems to be fine with all connections to do 35 minutes-photoshootings (= races so we can save the replays) with race quality on very high and voice chat on high. With 8 people in from 7 different countries, if I remember correct all from the EU, but still. I had more experiences where voice chatting in my private room was no problem as well. Can't tell about other's lounges though.

I have to say, although I have a wireless connection on my PS3 which as we all know is definitely not the best way to go online with it I rarely have problems with lag or lost connections. Even more, since a few weeks, the game online is actually working A LOT BETTER for me. Before it kept freezing when I tried to join or create a room, 8/10 cases, it was so annoying it actually kept me from playing online several evenings. I thought it was fault of my connection, but when I did a quick speed test on my PS3 I always got a download speed like 9 MB/s (with cable it's 32MB/s on PC and ~20MB/s on PS3) and a signal usually 70% strong, give or add a few percent, it keeps changing. But than, from one day to another, some PSN friend dropped me a message and told me the never-ending-loading balk glitch was fixed (that's what we called it lol, we both had it, actually all of my PSN friends I asked) and I tried... and it was true! I joined rooms about 25 times since that in the past 2 weeks and it always finished loading.
I suppose PD knew about that bug (server overload?) and fixed it now, maybe also because of the start of GT Academy, to make sure less problems happen to the demo players... I didn't change anything about the internet connection, and test results were the same as before. No temporary data cleaning since several months as well. Plus, once I was inside a lobby, I could stay there a whole 24 hours without leaving or losing connection ONCE (yes, I actually tested that... might be something I'll add to the "You know you already played too much GT5 when..." thread :P), though it was a cruise room, so there only was free drive, but there always had been at least 5, usually 8+ people inside, max was 14. I kept active about 90%of the time, it became a bit hard in the end so I slept the last 4 hours just for the achievement in my head of having stayed in a lobby for more than a whole day. When I woke up in the morning I looked at my clock and I was actually a full 24 hours and 32 minutes in there. That would be quite good even for a wired connection, wouldn't it?

Anyway, this is getting too long lol. Let's make it short, my experience is that even with a wireless connection that is not exactly strong you can play without problems and anyone can join, as long as you keep the voice chat off.

I'm such a nerd, typed all this on my PS3 with my USB keyboard because my PC is off, though the cursor/button lagging on here is so terrible delaying it would've been faster to power up the PC first and type it there. Sorry for any typing mistakes, noticed I left out some words but navigating the cursor on this is a pain in the arse.
