SEVEN controllers for ps3!?

I just gotta ask... what's up with the 7 controller ports? Even on a good sized TV four split screens are almost too small (and are too small for racing games) so why 7? It seems a little over-the-top. :odd:

Any speculation, theories, or actual reasons behind the idea? It just seems like a weird number...

That's what Bluetooth supports, period. Reducing the number would be cutting back on what the Bluetooth system is built to do.

There won't be any seven-player split-screens, if that's what you're worried about.. the only games that will ever support more than four players will be sports titles or party games where all seven players are playing on a single screen.

Actually, there is only 1 port. 7 controllers on bluetooth + 1 wired controller = 8 Total players.

Ps3 has dual HDMI Video-Outs, and thus, supports dual screen. This means that you can play a 4 player split on two seperate television screens. VERY awesome for team vs. team play, as the opposing team can't screenwatch in FPS's and etc.

Jedi and Omnis have both got it spot on, bluetooth supports a maximum of 7 connections at a time, the PS3 also has 1 conroller port so you can have upto 8 players. Now even if you don't have 8 player games you can sill use the connections for cameras, keyboard, mouse, printers ect, it's 7 bluetooth devices and controllers so it's not just DS3 pads or whatever they'll be called, it's dvd player remotes and so on as well.

I thought that you needed two HDMI connection to run one HD TV? i maybe wrong.

You're wrong.

Besides, on a large 1080p widescreen display 8 player splitscreen may not be so bad, but you also have 8 player games that doen't need splitscreen like sports games (think PES, FIFA, NFL, NBA, etc.)

And the PS3 also has 6 USB ports, don't forget that. The one controller port is I think only for some backwards compatability options.

Nifty. That makes sense, especially with two TVs. (8-way GT5, anyone?) The all on one screen sports/party games could get crazy, though (in a good way).
Off topic, I think the ps3 will clean the floor with the Revolution and 360...

the ps3 is equal or superior in every category to the 360...but all three will be friggin' beasts.

3-Wheel Drive that link has some sketchy and old'ish info they stated this

IGN

Real

3.2GHz Cell

------

Cell is a breakthrough architectural design -- featuring 8 Synergistic Processing Units (SPU) with Power-based core, with top clock speeds exceeding 4 GHz (as measured during initial laboratory testing).

here is the cell info from Sony

Cell has managed to stream 42 MPEG 2 HD vids at the same time thats without the help from the RSX PS3 is a monster of a machine.

I should point out that one is disabled in the factory.

Yeh this is true, but aparently they have got it to run with 7spu's @ 4.5ghtz, so the removel of one dont harm its potential of being a stomper of a CPU, if only apple was still with IBM, would be nice to get a Mac runing one of these :) or maybe 2 :D

also this chip is so small it would easily fit into a mobile phone or PSP2

The cell can do a lot of jobs. It's a versatile piece of equipment. It can act as a video or sound card, and etc.

But, anyway, there are the proper threads for this kind of discussion.

What's wrong with a seperate post about a specific aspect/question of the topic? There is a ps3 controller thread, but also a "wireless controller question" thread. It focuses on a specific aspect of the ps3 controller, not just the controller in general, as does this thread. Tht's why they are seperate.

I think he was talking about the conversation moving onto the cpu, not your initial post, thats fine.

yeh it was my fault for going off topic sorry (slapped my own wrist), im just worried about configuring the pads when drunk or when mates are pressing the buttons like little school girls, anyone had a play with anything bluetooth and how easy it is to get things connected.

seems like this is going to save on a wires and multitap problem but cause another in its place.

Yeah it's not going to be as easy as plug in andplay, it won't be hard to get controllers connected but it'll be different, and if your mates haven't tried that thing different before they might get it wrong. I'd be keen on seeing what system they implement for controlling devices connections.

if we have 2-player race in GT5 with dual screen support with just 1 PS3
that would be cool

I would just like to clarify on the 7 controllers thing. I went throuh this thread and i didn't see it mentioned by anyone but i may have missed it.

The reason it's 7 controllers is because Bluetooth considers the PS3 to be a controllers aswell making it a total of 8 controllers. So you can't play with 8 people (only with a multitap).

No you can play with 8 people, yes the PS3 is the 8th controler but theres also ports for other controllers via USB ect. 8 player is possible.

I wonder if the port will accept a DS2 controller? It would be a nice way to save about $30 for multiplayer, and it would also be great if the ps3 controllers don't turn aout to be very good. I'm sure they will be very good...but 'ya never know.

There will be 8 total controllers, plus the possibility of simultaneous use of USB peripherals. Can't forget the Wifi connectivity of PSPs and their possible controller capabilities as well.

Oh, I just didn't know what kind of port it was, so I wasn't sure if it was backwards compatible, too. (But that does make sense) That's why I asked.

This seems to be an older picture. If I recall, the three ethernet ports were dropped for production costs and now only one is being used. Or perhaps they'll use USB for ethernet purposes with a possible ethernet/USB hub thing. I dunno. I just thought I'd point that out.

No it still has three ethernet ports, what Sony were planning was to use the three porst a sub router, but now they're just being used as three ports or a hub. they didn't remove any ports for costs, removing or adding an Ethernet port will hardly cost anything more or less in production costs.

We were actually laughing about that the other day at work... the people who say that Sony should drop an ethernet port or some of the USB ports in order to "reduce the cost of the system".. my co-workers all looked at me for a minute and then they all started laughing hysterically, because they know that individual ports like that don't cost squat. Taking them out would reduce the production cost of the system by a buck or two, which will have no impact whatsoever on the in-store cost of the thing.
