Absolutely true.

Iorworth Hoare (how apposite), who has been in gaol for a total of 33 years for sex attacks (convicted to 18 years in 1973, and handed a life sentence in 1989) and has been branded "a danger to women", bought a lottery ticket while on day release from Gloucestershire's Leyhill Open Prison.

He won £7 million, but as long as he remains in prison, he is allowed only £2 a day, in line with other inmates,


So what do you think? Should prisoners be "allowed" to play the lottery?
 
If he's on one of the few days out, buys a ticket while getting smokes - yearh... Why not... If he's on a life sentence, he can dream of the money until he exhales that final time...

Then again - if he's violently attacked women on more than one occasion - why isn't he just dead :odd:
 
What a coincidence for this to happen, I think He deserves to have some of that money and since he is a convicted fellon I say give him half and donate the other half to a charity.
 
They should divide it up and give it to his victims

I don't think he deserves anything more than what he's got. Jail time.

Why would it matter if he gets the money or not, it's not like he's going to be buying anything in prison.
 
He didn't just run like hell after winning the lotto? That's the shocker.

Yeah, he should of kept his mouth shut, waited for another furlough day, and then collect the money. Next, off to South America...
 
I didn't know you were able to move money while in jail. Or maybe it's like that in Britain:odd:.

A wire transfer to World Bank in South America would only take about an hour. It only took me about 30 minutes to wire money from Holland to America a few years back.
 
i think it would be more taunting to give him the money 2 by 2. i'd just let him have it until he dies.. then give all his $$ to the victims or charity
 
Over here a man killed a 6 year old girl. That happened like 1 or 2 years ago. Now he is the star of a movie. The movie is about a man that killed a 13 year old girl. The movie is only out on DVD/VHS. One mayjor video store here has taken it off the shelves. I don't blame them.

Life can mean as little as 8 years in some cases. It's crap. Really it is.


Some prisoners are, with good behaviour, allowed day leave. Like the Shawshank Redemption, only without Tim Robbins. There's even talk of "weekend" prison - where "prisoners" can do their normal job through the week and get locked up at the weekend. What the hell punishment is that?


Mr. Hoare was actually released from prison on parole, but when the police and prison service heard about the win, they immediately took him into custody, as he'd tried to flee the country once before. He had a packed suitcase in his hallway.

In that movie, none of the prisoners ever got day leave. When you saw them out of the prison, they were in the prison yard, and when they were working or watching a movie, they were doing it within the confines of the prison. Only three main characters got out of the prison at any time throughout the entire film - the old guy and Morgan Freeman were paroled, and Tim Robbins escaped.
 
I think that not only should he have to give the money to his victims,
I believe that he should have to write the cheques himself on a weekly or monthly basis so he gets a real feel of giving up "his" fortune on an ongoing basis.

I'd swear "Andy" went to the local town on day release.

Maybe I'm thinking of another prison film with an actor I hate.
 
I'm quite hard line on this sort of thing. I believe that we are members of a society, and that that society affords us certain comforts and protections. In order to do this, it has rules. If you break the rules, you should not be afforded the comforts.

The national lottery is one such comfort.
 
I work in a State Prison here in KS, Last nite was calm, and I got a chance to read the inmate's rule book. They are not allowed to have cash money, and they are not allowed to buy lottery tickets. (Of course, not having any money would make purchasing a ticket a bit more difficult)
If an inmate is caught with cash, even a penny, his whole cell-house is very likely to be "shaken down". That would not make that person very popular with his cell-house.
In fact, because it would also likely involve a lock-down, that person might be looking at an ass-whoopin'. Especially if something is turned up in someone else's possession that he'd been successfully hiding up to that point.

If Andy was the old guy who killed himself then no - he was paroled to work in the town's supermarket. Then he killed himself.

Either way, he didn't get no day leave.
 
They shouldn't be able win the lottery while in the slammer or if they have serious crimes. Or if they do, the money should go to the victim or the victim's family.
