The SFI Foundation, Inc., a non-profit organization established to issue and administer standards for the quality assurance of specialty performance and racing equipment, has issued a warning to racers that counterfeit devices have been obtained by Simpson Performance Products and the matter is under investigation.

What sort of scumbag counterfeits safety equipment?

I have no clue, but its apparently possible to stoop even lower then low.

This doesn't really shock me at all. Virtually everything is counterfeited, so safety parts being copied is a given. The thing I'm curious about where they came from and how they got supplied to the public. If some of the major parts chains (e.g. Summit, etc.) sold these parts, that would be an especially serious problem.
