Sharing internet from Mac to PC via cable

Yao everyone.

In my house we have three macs connected to our wireless network with broadband. Recently we got our hands on a decent PC which we thought we could use for programs that doesn't run on a mac. Today I was gonna update my nokia phone firmware, but to do that the PC needs to be connected to the internet. Problem is, it doesn't have a wireless card in it. So I thought I would share the internet connection from the mac via a network cable. Uh-uh, can't get it to work!
The PC says it's connected to a network but there is no internet. On the mac I have shared the internet via ethernet cable so I don't get this...
Anyone have any experience in this?

I appreciate ANY tips or help!

:)

Not a Mac guy, so I should probably just shut up, but the Mac is probably not supplying an IP address to the PC. That's just a guess, based on the symptom. At the PC, go to a command prompt and run ipconfig and see if you have an address and gateway that are not 169.something. (If it's older than 2000, you should run winipcfg instead.)

Do you have the firewall on? If you do, you need to go to the “Services” tab and enable “Personal Web Sharing”.

So it should be 169 something?

Oh I see. Didn't realise there was such a setting. Maybe it'll work now!

Edit: btw, should it be a crossed cable?

Yes, a crossover cable between two computers. I should have thought of that, sorry.

okay. so, the macs IP on the network is 10.0.0.4, should that be the gateway at the PC? I know nothing about networking basically..

aight, well I think there is a crossover cable kicking around in the garage somewhere. Guess I have to start digging!

Edit: Found the crossover cable. It's a no-no. Maybe this is not supposed to work. Gah!

I just got this to work. I did ^^ and all of a sudden (with crossover cable) it was working, it's great! It all magically configured itself to work. Now my phone has new firmware, so no more disappeared text messages!

Thanks guys! 👍

EDIT: Well.... Internet works fine in web browser, but MSN Messenger can't connect. How do I set this up? Please guys, I'm desperate.
