Is this option t.v dependent? What are the differences? Ive had it on flicker reduction since I got the game, I switched to sharpness today, it looks, well, sharper. Maybe, even a bit more vivid in color deapth. Also, are these options dependent on weather or not you have options like color deapth etc set to 'full' or 'limited' switched on in the display settings on the XMB?

Yes, it is TV dependent. You can find more in "Gran Turismo 5 Tech Analysis" article on Eurogamer's Digital Foundry blog.

"There is the option in display settings to choose between Normal, Flicker Reduction and Sharper modes. We suspect these are for optimising the game on a standard def monitor, as comparison shots seem to indicate no difference in 720p, 1080p or 3D modes. Here are some 1080p shots. We tested both in-game and via Replay Theatre, but image quality remained the same regardless of our selections."

This is Interesting to me. I wear glasses for distance when driving for real. In GT however the TV is at the end of my driving rig so well in my usefull sight. Ive been finding that gt is a bit like driving without my specs on. I can see the signposts and distance markers but cant read em till im virtually on top of em. I realise things get blurred at speed but even in the slower class races its the same. Might go and have a look for these settings! Thanks!!!

Standard = QAAx2 + TAAx2
Stablility = QAAx2
Sharpness = MSAAx2 + TAAx2

Since im not a big fan of temporal AA, i use the stability mode wich gives the best overall IQ to me.

Full or limited mode must match your tv setting. If there s no option related to this on your set, it's very likely to be limited. (limited is not worse, just a different range).

So according to that link, GT5 is actualy a 720p native game.

It seems like most games for the PS3 are just 720p native.

So, was it stupid of me to get a 1080p native television? I mean I didn't by a top of the heap set, but still, did I waste money here?

No, its 1280x1080.

"he game still renders at native 720p with 4x multi-sampling anti-aliasing (MSAA) when your XMB is set to 720p mode, while the resolution shifts to 1280x1080 with 2x quincunx (QAA) when the 1080p mode is engaged."

50% increase over 720p.

Oh, I misread that. It renders 720p native when it's in 720p mode, as opposed to downscaling 1080p to 720p.

I guess I'm just being too sensitive due to so many ported 360 games making me feel like I wasted my time getting a 1080p tv.

Thanks Bodger!

so is 720p better to run gt5?

Good question. It actually should be. It should have less imperfections because it has more anti-aliasing running, and it doesn't have to upscale or downscale at all (in 1080p mode, GT5 has to upscale 1280 x 1080 to 1920 x 1080),

I've tried it and it really seems like there's more imperfections. I don't know. Personally, I'd rather they try for full 1080p native and drop AA altogether. Or at least drop AA and get rid of the low res shadows and smoke/water trails.

I hate when games use a lot of post processing. GT5 is really minimal with it, and it's one of the clearest looking games out there but games like any NFS, Grid, Shift 1 & 2, and many others (not just racing games) THAT HAVE WAAAY TOO MUCH BLUR!!!! I absolutely cannot stand blur. I'd rather have stair steps everywhere, aliasing, I don't care. Anything is better than overall blurry graphics. Plus, even the blurry graphics, I still notice all the imperfections. They're not as noticeable only because ALL of the detail is hard to notice. What's the point of working hard on graphics and textures just to blur them out later?

I don't know, that's my thought on anti-aliasing and other post processing crap that video games overuse nowadays

F1 2011 looks dreadful to GT5 in comparison and always had the feeling it was due to that, or that the gfx engine is just craptacular.

I know this is not a definitive resource or anything, but it is an interesting '1080 vs. 720 test' post.

A decent point made there: on smaller equal size HD tv's, you will not notice as much of a difference compared to comparing a smaller vs. larger screen.

Yes actually almost anything by Codemasters has that terrible blurriness but especially Grid and Dirt 1. F1 is a bit less but still really bad. I don't know why they do that. Some people don't notice but that's because they're not looking. I think it's hideous.

Flicker Reduction all the way! :-)

Temporal AA makes picture "moving", like de-interlaced one with no quality added.
720p - bit better frame-rate but also bit more blur (especially the track edges)

(Sadly game looks bad anyway - need to wait for PS4.IMO)
