I hadn't played Shift 1 in a while. My HDD ran out of space, and seeing that I had shift 2, and shift 1 took up 5gb almost, I deleted the game data, and hadn't played Shift 1 in a year almost.

I got a new HDD, and yesterday I fired Shift 1 up, and took it for a spin.

Now this came as a surprise to me, I don't know if it's my improved knowledge of setting up steering wheels, or what, but Shift 1 is not only a lot better than I remember, to me, it almost seems even better than Shift 2.

My first impression is that it somehow has less floatiness, and less input lag.

Is it just me that thinks that?

When I first got Shift 2, I immediately thought the physics were better, but now I'm not so sure.

Anyone else feel the same? Especially if you use a wheel, please comment which you think is better/less floaty.

I didn't manage to play Shift2 with my DFP. I didn't bother enough with the Logitech profiler settings which may fix the feeling, but the in-game settings and feel is tragically awful. Lag is big which entirely destroys the experience IMHO. Fabulous career project, very bad controls.

I didn't think the career was very good either.

Shift could've been a great game, it could've almost rivalled GT5, and easily beaten forza 4 but it's kind of left in the gutter because of it's physics. SMS is such a bad developer. They're supposedly capable of legit physics, but everything I've ever seen them do, pCars, shift, etc. has all had decent physics but with poor control. It all has input lag, and floatiness to it. How can they be incapable of fixing something so basic?

Even still, Shift 1 and 2 are massive improvements over the rest of the NFS series, and by far the best NFS games to date.

What I just noticed while playing Shift 1, is it has a heavy steering assist on at all times. Even if you turn all the assists off, there's still a built in active steering assist. That's why it's less floaty. If you look at the drivers hands, you'll see it correcting things, and moving around when you aren't.

I knew Forza 3 and 4 had built in assists, I kind of forgot that Shift 1 had built assists too.

Even though I hate assists, I almost enjoy shift 1 more anyways. it's missing a lot of cars, features and tracks especially from shift 2, but the driving is more enjoyable. I also kind of prefer the graphics, they seem to be more clear, and the color pallette is more realistic. The only thing I hate though, is all the stupid trackside objects. For me it'll never be even close to a sim just because of that. All the trackside objects constantly remind you that you're playing a video game, and even worse, a NFS game

You're definitely not alone in those sentiments. I much prefer Shift 1 over Shift 2. Crisper graphics, better looking cockpits, better lighting on stages, and no impressionist painting looking trees.

And I prefer the handling too. It just seems sharper. I don't play on a wheel though. But there's no lag and no mushy feeling to the cars that's present in Shift 2, even with a pad.

Actually, I like the lighting in shift 2. The night racing is actually really impressive. I like how they capture certain things, and the cockpit lighting is awesome. The cars are pretty good models, but the cockpits are especially good. They would be the best cockpits around if it weren't for GT5.

Like you said though, Shift 1 has cleaner/clearer graphics, but it also has all the stupid track side objects that really ruin the experience for me. It just makes me realize the entire time that I'm playing a video game & I don't like that feeling.

I'm pretty sure the reason Shift 1 physics feel better is just because of a built in aid that never shuts off. You know when SMS was saying all this and that about Shift 2s "new Elite handling model", I guarantee you all the "elite" handling was, was Shift 1 without that built in driver aid LOL

If I had to guess what driver aid it is I'd say steering assist. The way the wheel seems to move itself to keep the car pointed in the right direction
