When it comes to damage modelling.
No melted plastic look here (and hitting something doesn't sound like running into a cardboard box either).
Here is what happened when I went into the corkscrew at Laguna Seca too fast, hit another car, and rolled my Honda S2000.

I am definitely enjoying the game so far. There are things that GT5 does better, and things that Shift 2 does better, that much is already apparent.
It will take a week or so, before I've played enough to give a fair accounting of how they compare for me.

And of course, I'm still playing Test Drive Unlimited 2 and loving it!
Can you tell I like driving games?

I just had to share these damage pictures, as this was always one of my peeves with GT5.

That does look like good damage modeling, but after seeing GT5 screenshots for the past 3 months, those graphics look like complete 🤬
Is there a photomode in Shift 2?

So far the only thing shift 2 has on gt5 is the damage in my opinion. It feels extremely different. I adjusted the wheel settings based off on someone's post and that did help a ton. S2 feels sort of crammed and hectic but that is just my opinion. It is still a fun game but in my opinion it just doesn't compete with GT5.

You're comparing to GT5's Laguna Seca then? That's a masterpiece that one is, lovingly rendered in high detail with crisp textures, stunning backdrops and marvellous attention to detail.

I think he's talking about the 200 Premium cars as everything else in GT5 looks like ****.

That is from the replay photomode, just like GT5 has.
There is another mode specifically for taking pictures of you car.
Right now, I only see how to take pictures inside your garage.
Whether there are "photo locations" like GT5, I don't know yet.
One of three possibilities:
1.) It doesn't have locations
2.) I haven't figured out where to look yet
3.) They get unlocked as you progress

I already unlocked the ability to paint your car and use stickers (I was worried when I couldn't do it at first) and although I can't change wheels yet, other folks have unlocked that ability. So option #3 might be valid.

I'll take a few pics of my S2000 in the garage photo shoot session and upload them here in a little bit.

OK, here are the pics from my garage.
Keep in mind I'm not the best photographer, I've only taken maybe 20 pics in GT5, so don't rag on the angle/lighting/anything that requires photo skill. :)

As for the graphics during game play, I would have to say that GT5 is slightly better.
Not enough that I even notice it when racing, as I am concentrating on driving, but still there is a difference. Of course, GT5 is 1080p and Shift 2 is 720p, so that right there probably covers the difference I can see.

I guess it comes down to what you personally care most about, graphics or gameplay. Test Drive Unlimited 2 has graphics below the quality of both of these, but I have been having a blast playing it for the last weeks.

As for physics, I can say Shift 2 right out of the box is not good. But, do some basic adjustments (many posts here and other forums) and it becomes quite good.
Not as good as GT5 yet, but there are also tons of settings and calibrations I have yet to play with, so I will delay final judgement. Honestly, I did not like the handling in GT5 using the out of box settings, but after many different tweeks and changes, I got it too the point where I really like it. Right now, I'd say Shift 2 physics are at about 80% of GT5 physics on my personal happy scale.

On with the pictures:

Shift 2 FTW! It's a much better game, for sure. AI, Graphics (really? really! to a certain extent, of course), feel, night racing, number of tracks, you name it. Much better overall package than GT5. I thought this game is not going to be that good, but it is that good. Looking forward to Shift 3 already! :)

It's good to see so many people say this is better than GT5 considering this is a GT fansite, Friday cant come quick enough!!!!

Played the game for 10 minutes and I can honestly say that I don't like it and will be the last nfs game I buy...lol Damage modeling is good but everything else sucks IMO...maybe it'll grow on me.

By the way that's not even an accurate S2000 CR...it's just an AP1...didn't even get that one right.

What don't you like Advan?
If you read my post above, I (and many others) thought the handling was horrible when it was first tried for those 2 intro races.
But after changing numerous settings, many of us (including me) are quite happy with the results. And I'm sure I will tweak it more as I go.
Plus, that is not even with any car tuning.
I was no happy with GT5 out of the box either, but after changing general settings for handling, it got much better. And then I found some individual cars sucked, but after tuning their suspension, braking, etc. they were quite fun to drive. I am willing to bet this will be the same with Shift 2, as I took a quick look at the Tuning section and there are as many, if not more, ways to modify each car's setup.

Have you changed the steering settings yet? That seems to be fixing the major problems for most people.

BK,

I was expecting similar type physics from GT5 or FM3 but it's so far from it. Then again I just played for 10 mins or so. I'll give it some time to see if I'll like it.

First 2 races are CRAP! Not an indication of how the game is. Once you change the settings and get a proper car, it's a whole lot better.

Jay,

It's the last gen Si.

FD,

I hope so...

One of the things I hate is the ffb fading to indicate loss of grip....argh

lol, GT5 wins this debate just cause it's menu's are more user friendly.

but shift 2 is fun as hell. breaks the monotony, but, I'll be keeping GT5, that game has longevity.

I know my 2002 ford fiesta 1.8 tddi made fireworks if driven hard... pretty cool in the review mirror.

But yes its there for graphics and all the cars seem to do that inf shift2

c'mon, its cool :D

BKViper: Shift 2 blows away GT5

Can you just change the title. It does not blows away GT5! There are positive and negative characteristics to both games.

SHIFT IS AN ARCADE GAME, shift 2 might as well put gun mounted cars so they can have a death race while having bugatti police cars chasing you coz the driving physics is non existent here.
