I have a couple choices that I can choose. I have a 1993 Honda Accord for $500 that I can buy from a family member, or I would like to shop around for a 1998-2001 Chevy Camero or a Honda Prelude. My dream car, for any year and however old I am, is a NSX-R. I love those cars, and Gran Turismo introduced me to them.

First off, how old are you and where do you live? That's going to be a big deciding factor. Also what is your budget?

I can tell you right now you aren't going to be able to get a NSX-R at all, unless you have a good chunk of change.

Get the Accord and run it until the wheels refuse to turn even. Until that happens, save up for something decent. First Car + Camaro = Tree, so you shouldn't be shooting for one of them anyways without some practical experience.

Thanks. Yeah the camero doesn't go over too well with my parents. I guess the accord is my best bet, even if it's an auto.

If you gave a location, I could at least take a look at Craigslist in your area for other possible cars.

Go with the Accord, it is the perfect first car. It has very good gas mileage(for a 93) has fairly low insurance rates and is very good reliability wise.

A Camaro will eat up your gas budget in a week, cost a lot insurance wise and probably kill you when you run into a tree.

well, if you can find a Volvo Turbo. I'd prefer a non-turbo wagon for a beginning driver, anyway. Yes, safer than other cars of the era...but you've gotta remember, 80s cars weren't exactly safe to begin with...the slower the car, the better. Volvo parts are also quite expensive, despite that they don't break often.

I honestly think the Accord's best for a learner, if you can't find an old Volvo. I'd also recommend a Geo Prizm, usually found on the cheap and bulletproof, thanks to being a Toyota re-badge from when Toyota made good cars.

My first car was a Opel Kadett/Vauxhall Vectra -91. I got it for 730 USD. Then I owned some other cars and now when my Renault Laguna -96 broke down I got my second first car. A Mazda 323F 1.8 16V GT -90 (With popup lights, a wing, and sunroof. I feel like 18 again). It is a bit rusted and there are a few minor problems with it (you can't fuel it up in full pace, so it takes a while to fill it up) but all electronics works and for 1000 USD it was a bargain. It is pretty fast.

it's big, it's safe, it's cheap.. it's also RWD and came with turbo engine. ;)

Being a fan of Volvos, I really wouldn't recommend an older 740/940 as a first car unless you have some mechanical knowledge as it's highly unlikely you'll find one of those in mint condition.

A 240 would be fine, but those seem to have the same kind of following that Mercedes W126s have, so its doubtful you would be able to find one at anywhere near cheap.

My first car, which I am currently driving, is practically the same as that: A $500 AT Altima bought from a friend's brother.

You don't really need something good for your first car, you haven't developed any standards yet. My car takes 11 seconds to get to 60 mph, and it feels rather fast. I've made it handle amusingly with high tyre pressure and deactivated ABS (exactly as fun and unsafe as it sounds). And, best of all, I can treat it however I please. As a $500 car, it demands pretty much nothing from you, other than the occasional oil change. It will both motivate and enable you to save for a higher-class car (unless your dream car is a Volvo 240, in which case I suggest a Volvo 240).

It is a fine, fine automobile. Go for the Accord.

I say use that car until the wheels fall off and save for something more fun. This isn't really a fun car but it is a reliable and free way to get from point a to point b.

If it's free, the worst that can happen is you buy it and then sell it again for some money.
