I've just recently started thinking about it so i downloaded the F1 2012 demo and a couple things bugged me.

1. There is no such thing as throtte/brake control it's either full on or full off which i think is a slap in the face to controller users. Do not like that at all.

2. The steering is extremely sensitive and it reminded me of the old D-pad days of twitching the car back and forth to get it straight. Moving the stick a mm is nearly a quarter turn on the wheel. There isn't an option to change this in the demo and it really makes it hard to get into a groove and drive smooth and clean.

I was also wondering about customization, Can you build a car or even a race team, choose the manufacturer, make the paint scheme, choose the sponsor etc. How far does the customization go?

One other thing physics, Is there a maximum simulation setting or are you stuck with whatever codemasters decides you should use. I would want to be on the maximum settings for this because i don't like the "everyone can be fast" mindset that many games have. I would want the actual driving to be the hardest thing to overcome in a race instead of the A.I cars being the focus of difficulty.

There really aren't that many good racing games around anymore on consoles so should i take a chance on F1 2012 or should i look elsewhere for my racing fix?

BTW It would be the PS3 version :)

If you're wanting to get a racing fix, you should definitely buy a wheel. A Driving Force GT will run you ~$50. To be honest, I don't think buying a more racing games really has a point when you're just on DS3. From my experience, DS3 racing get dull, boring and repetitive regardless of how many new games you buy.

TL;DR: Buy a wheel or don't bother buying another racing game.

You can't mod the PS3 version, so no - changing paint scheme etc. isn't possible. PC version is a whole different ball game tho, you can change whatever you want.

The helmet I'm using, for example.

Let alone the HD / double HD resolution cars that I'm using instead of the normal cars.

You can set the difficult to Expert but that's pretty much it, that'll disable all the driving aids and max the AI difficulty. It's quite a challenge this year, promised.

Yeah i'm not getting it.

It's to bad really i'm just starting to get into F1 but after i heard that the ps3 versions are ported over in bad quality i won't even waste my time with codemasters.

If they won't even put in the effort to release an equal game on both consoles i'll spend my money elsewhere.

I have 2011 and 2012 on PS3 and I think 2012 is much better than 2011 graphics wise. The game is much harder though, with a huge change to the way the car handles. I have to completely re-learn to drive it due to the understeer...

I would argue you don't 'drive' using a DS3; get a wheel and it is a great game; but if you are more about liverys and paints stick to GT5 eh

Not liveries and paints per se, but the ability to change the appearance of a car. You can't do that in F1 games.

Well that kinda sucks. It would be awesome if they let you create your own F1 from the ground up. But i'm sure FIA wouldn't allow it like everything else they get their hands on.

I have a quick question how long is the career mode?

PS3 version is not bad and very playable. It's just PS3 version is not up to par with X360 and especially PC. I have played it on both PS3 and PC.
F1 is not a "car collection and painting" game like Forza and GT but a "Racing" game. So far it's the best "racing game" on the PS3. (X360 does have RacePro which is another good race game)

Yeah that's a problem tho. People who wan't it on PS3 are paying the same amount of money for a worse quality game.

Wasn't F1 originally a PS3 exclusive? What is that all about.

Sony used to produce the F1 games so obviously they were at one time, exclusive to the PlayStation. Now that they don't publish F1 games, they are multiplatform.

For what it's worth, I've played F1 2012 on both the PS3 and 360 for multiple hours on each platform and couldn't notice a difference, or at least any sort of difference that would lead me to say one is better than the other. The previous versions, yes, I thought the 360 had the upperhand, but in my personal opinion this years title looks and performs the same on both consoles.

As for your original question, if you like racing games I would highly suggest this one. The cars may feel twitchy and hard to control at first because you aren't used to them, but you will get the hang of it after a while and it feels great, even using a DualShock.

I can not believe that codemaster didnt make gas and brake pressure sensitive on custom controls. I use X for gas, square for brake and triggers for shifting in GT5 and PD did an amazing job with pressure sensitive buttons. Shame on you CM not all of us are aliens and use ridiculous controller layouts. Game breaker imo.

Hi, You really need to get a good racing wheel to control an F1 car with any sensitivity to the steering, brakes and gas. I've been playing F1 since 2006 (pre codemasters) on my PS3 and have loved it. The Logitech GT DF wheel works for me although it may not be the best. You can also set auto gear shift, auto brakes and AI difficulty to "easy" to get used to the tracks when first starting out. Then you can start playing with the car set-up to optimize your lap times on this (arguably the best) incredible racing sim. GT5 has rally cars, NASCAR and go carts and lots of other good stuff too. No, you can't paint an F1 car!!! Career mode lasts for a max of 5 years then you start again. Have fun.

That's why you need to get F1 2011, not F1 2012.

Hi, I went from F1 2010 to F1 2012 and the steering wheel I have (DFGT) was really wacko with the 2010 settings I had. I managed to get the wheel working pretty well with these settings:

All deadzones.....0
steering saturation........30%
steering linearity...........50%
Throttle and Brake saturations......50%
FFB all at 70%
My lap times are still not quite as fast yet but that could be car set-up.
At least it's drivable now and the KERS button is fun.

Ive used Steering saturation 70%,
Linearity 30%
& 0% deadzone & all others at 0% since the update
also FFB on Environment 90%,
Feedback strength 100%,
& wheel weight 80%

I use a Logitech G27 & play on ps3

If I'm honest (at least last I checked), GT5 is the only racing game on the PS3 with pressure sensitive controls for the four triggers (X, Triangle, Square, O). It isn't just Codemaster's that didn't incorporate it (see Pretty much all the supercar titles by eutechnyx, Both NFS Shift games and a multitude of others). As funky as it is, I just deal with it. Of course you could try mapping R2 instead, definately has all the pressure sensitivity you want, jsut requires some getting used to.

My stepson got me 2012 for Christmas. It's pretty good and refreshing, unlike Race Driver. The AI is more forgiving than Forza 4 for sure. Other than that, as GT gearhead, I wouldn't spend my own money on this series but, it is challenging and fun once you embrace it.

GT5 player here and I got F1 2012 for Christmas. Had never had any others in the series, only tried the demo which left me very disappointed with the steering. Apparently the update did a lot for the steering feel as it's spot on after using Codemasters recommended settings. Using 1%, 63%, 10% and everything else at 0%. Feels fine to me. None of that wacky feel of the demo. Using a DFGT with modded pedals.

Should a GT5er get F1? Well, I'm loving having challenging races with a competent AI. Right now I'm just doing quick races and TT's to get a feel for the cars and learning tracks. Graphics are a notch or two below GT5 of course. But I had really gotten tired of chase the rabbit and parking AI. Plus the opportunity to learn some of the worlds best race tracks is another major point. Not being a F1 fan whatsoever, this looked like a good way to get introduced to the sport, too. It's great being able to just grab a car on any track, set the length and AI and go.

I've got a loooong way to go learning to drive these cars fast. I need the AI to be on Easy Mode right now, heh. But I'm learning to drive with no driving aids whatsoever and in cockpit view like I do in GT5. Those cars are so incredibly fast compared to anything I'm used to in GT5, never had done much driving with GT5's F1's at all. Man, these cars are amazing, hard to believe the driving talent needed to pilot these cars in real life.

For sure. I go to the Australian GP every year and you just don't realise with the DRS, KERS, all these buttons to learn. It took a game( and its no where compared to learning what the drivers learn in real life) to give me a taste of what they do. Lots to learn.

You can buy 2010 & 2011 second hand. 2012 demo free. All cheap fun. Great particularly for F1 fans. Recommend for GT5 fans.

Yes you should get it.i just got it and I think it's the best sim racer on the consoles..but if you can get the Xbox 360 version with a steering wheel.its much better than the ps3 version...

Yes. They seem to have mended the handling problems of 2011 for 2012. It's doesn't handle like a camel on drugs anymore.

I have 2010 and 2011 for the PS3 and both have careless bugs and limited updates. The quality is inferior compared to GT5. As another poster said the game is much, much better with a steering wheel, particularly one that has lots of PS3 buttons on it so you can easily change gears, turn on DRS, and activate KERS all in one second. The sense of speed is much, much better than GT5 and the tracks are more than passable. If the Formula GT and Ferrari F1 cars in GT5 are not enough for you then definitely get 2010, which is the better-made game of the two in my opinion.
