Should I buy A PS3

It's easy for me to say "Go for it" without knowing your situation.

What reasons do you have for why you should and shouldn't?

There is a new 80GB model coming out by the end of this month at $400. But you lose playability of PS2 and PS1 games, 2 usb, and the media card slots.

Nah, dont bother with the 80GB, try and find a 60GB (did they do those in America?) second hand or whatever.
You can easily upgrade the hard drive if you run out of space.

Yes they did and I have a 60GB model myself that I bought last summer. I only got 9GB of space left after a year but I have 12 games and a ton of demos.

I guess part of it is it's always been a GT console for me. The only games I have for the PS1/PS2 are all of the GT games and TT, that's pretty much it.

The PS3 and gaming in general these days I've started to expand a bit.

- I got MGS4 and finished it. Can't bring myself to play it over again... :guilty:
- RSV2 is good, but compared to the 360 it's really buggy. 👎
- Heavenly Sword is ok, it's like a girl version of God of War.
- COD4 sucks like RSV2 compared to the 360 version. :grumpy:

As for Dvds and Blu Ray, that's probably where it will shine when it's not in use by me and used by family.

From what ive heard COD4 on both the consoles is identical apart from some slight differences in the distant visuals which are only really there for eye candy, I thought it looked brilliant on PS3.

Why is this in the PSP forum?

Just what I was thinking!

As for the OP, if you can afford it then why not (unless you have more important things to buy, such as a car, etc).

As for which one to got for. Seeing as you are in the US, if you want PS2 backwards compatablity then get an 80GB PS3 (if they still sell them that is).

Not the "new" 80GB mentioned above....the older one that emulates PS2 games just like the UK 60GB PS3.

I wouldn't go for a US 60GB or even a UK 60GB if I was buying for the first time because they are all out of warranty now.

So if it breaks you have to pay for repair!

If your not fussed about PS2 backward compatability then get a 40GB PS3 (it has PS1 backwards compatability, but not PS2 backwards compatability).

If your concerned about hard drive size for future then don't!

The PS3 uses a standard 2.5" laptop 5400 RPM SATA HDD which Sony have made so it can be easily changed WITHOUT voiding the warranty!

It even tells you how to change the HDD in the PS3 manual. I recently upgraded my 60GB UK PS3 to a 320GB, 5400 RPM Western Digital HDD for just £60.

You can also fit 7200 RPM drives, but if I bought a 320GB, 7200 RPM Western Digital drive it would have cost £120!!

No point in spending double the cash just to save a few milliseconds of time during loading. Well I dont think so anyway.

Yes, do buy one. Steer clear of XBOX 360's. The PS3 is better. It's basically a PSP that plugs into your TV. So you'll have no real surprises about the layout of it. Plus, you can do network play with the PSP in tandem with the PS3.

I wouldn't stay away from a 360. Theyre amazing consoles with superior multiplayer, just depends which xbox / ps3 only titles you prefer. (I guess we realized we are on a GT forum)
